I get the feeling that the creators wanted to do an actual tank combat show before deciding that cute girls are more marketable. And unlike a lot of mecha shows, Girls und Panzer doesn't feel the need to explain exactly how or why certain events or maneuvers work. They're mostly based on real-world events/vehicles so explanations aren't necessary.

It's not the same without the Gunbuster March. * crosses arms *

That's still nowhere nearly as cool as "Katyusha" in Russian though.

The poor accuracy of Soviet tanks can be mostly attributed to poorly trained crews. Pravda are the defending champions, so it should be expected that the crews are much more capable.

More like the whole team is already trapped in the church. The writers have shown that they're not cheap enough to pull that kind of surprise, and I respect them for that.

Unless most of the good gunners/crews from Pravda graduated since their victory.

We know that Katyusha and probably Nonna were part of last year's championship team, so Pravda likely has a solid core of veterans. A champion school will also receive topnotch recruits, so they'll have a very good talent base to work with. While Soviet conscripts only get a couple of weeks of training (and often with different tanks they actually end up using), Pravda has a full time tank team so they have far more training opportunities. And since they're probably considered the favorites, it can be assumed that they're really good at it.

That's all conjecture, but we can draw similar conclusions from episode 8. Pravda executed every phase of Katyusha's plan very well; from disciplined maneuvers to skilled fieldcraft. This kind of skill only comes from well-trained crews.

Just poor accuracy.

Though to be fair they have two things against them in that situation.

1. They are surrounding their enemy. Thus they cannot afford to aim too high or risk friendly fire. Thus they have to aim low.

2. They also suffer from an over-consentration of fire. With all the snow-dirt hits from so many tanks, not only does that partly block their field of fire, but also they can't tell which blast was theirs, thus making correction difficult. This is similar to naval combat were a ship taking fire from either multiple warships or from multiple sizes of cannons from a single ship (pre-dreadnaught era) would cause the firing ship(s) to have difficulty in correcting their aim as they would not know which splash was theirs in order to walk the splashes to the target. The Japanese in World War II used colored dye in their warship's shells in an effort to correct this problem. The Americans used radar fire control instead.

This is a non-factor in tank combat because all of the fire is from aimed shots, and there's little danger of friendly fire as long as you've acquired the proper targets. Besides that, aiming low isn't a remedy for friendly fire to begin with.

That's only in effect for naval combat where you need to see the shell splash to correct your fire. Warships need to do so because they fire at 10,000+m ranges while tanks don't shoot at targets that far away. They don't rely on fire correction - at combat ranges, there's a decent chance for tanks to score hits with the very first shot.

I think of the opposite.

But they could simply position their tanks in front of the entrance of the church and fire from there... No risk of friendly fire there. In regards of aiming. The Panzer team are basically "sitting ducks" inside the church. It's hilarious if the Russian team can't even flagged one tank at 50-70m.

Interesting bit of trivia, but the official Twitter revealed that Katyusha was the commander of the tank that shot Miho's during the previous year's match, and she was given overall command of this year's team precisely because of this game-winning shot. Huh.

So she shot an immobile tank. I don't see that as being grounds for a promotion...

It did win them the championship though. A win is a win.

A win is a win, but a win won that way reduces the credit of the one winning it. In my opinion she didn't earn it. She got the win fairly (while I think the match should have stopped when the tank went in the water, that's not her fault, and she may not even have seen it happen), yeah, but she didn't earn any particular recognition for making the shot, because there was nothing special to it. Anyone (except Momo) could have done it.

Funny you said that, because,

Unless she's the one who planned and executed the ambush. Doubly so if she somehow planned the "drop a tank in the water" thing...

In war that would be perfectly viable.

But in a sports competition, the lives of the students overshadows victory as it is bad for students to die in any school activity.

I think this little bit of trivia is just to add to the impression that, by all rights, Katyusha herself shouldn't even be in command of this operation. She was promoted due to something that was kind of a lucky fluke, underestimates and looks down on her opponents, and doesn't even listen to her second-in-command's suggestions. And yet here she is, having sprung a near-perfect trap with her opponents shaking in terror.

Remember the mentioning of vulgar tactics? Why do I get the feeling that the "ship falling into water" was what Katyusha came up with.....

And why do I get the feeling Nonna always has to pull Katyusha's ass out the fire in the end....

Just a little bit of random trivia: Otto Carius, the Tiger ace that Yukari quoted a while ago? He's still alve and lives in Germany.

And he runs a pharmacy he owns called "Tiger Apotheke" (Tiger Apothecary).

Inb4 Yukari figures out to go to Germany so she can worship at his feet.
