Lol CHitanda getting drunk off the chocolates. Those 3 theories were pretty bad. Wonder what Oreki will deduce.

I get the feeling Irisu knew the other amateur sleuths' theories wouldn't work, and just used it to keep Oreki's..erm.. the Classic Club's interest on the video.

But important information about the mystery was produced by talking to the amateur sleuths, so I assume that the true resolution is going to rely on some of those facts.

Like the last episode, there's a lot to take in. There are enough points of light to follow that I'm tempted to avoid this thread until I'm sure I can't solve it without seeing what others noticed.

Spoiler for First-viewing notes:

The real mystery is, of course, the meta one about what the deal with the writer and the other students is. This may or may not be the key to the movie mystery, so it's hard not to feel like you're grasping in the dark, waiting for the reveal that will set everything straight.

Wow.. So, it went to go on for a 3rd episode? :O

Well, I knew that the three theories won't have much to do, to be honest. Oreki is going to solve it and the presence of Irisu senpai is the proof that she knew that the amateur detectives won't solve it.

Chitanda getting drunk was funny though..

In this episode of Hyouka . . .
HolmesOreki, WatsonSatoshi, and LestradeIbara are invited to talk to three members of the movie's production staff. Chitanda brings booze-filled candies, of which, having just one makes you unsafe to drive anywhere in Japan . . . so being unable to escape in the Mystery Machine, the kids decide to hang around to hear the theories. They are all shot down one, after the other for being uniformly terrible, while Chitanda gets so <GITAH CHORD>faced, she begins channeling PicklesRitsu, before exclaiming "Oh my God, it's full of stars!" and gets whisked away into the monolith. Afterwards, Irisu accosts Oreki to put the boots to him, medium-style, for his failure to deliver.

In this episode, Ibara takes a very active role, grilling the suspects. Oreki, being Oreki, deflates each theory. We learn that Hongou was very detailed in her scriptwriting, and her entire research consists of Sherlock Holmes mysteries. It would've been a really slow episode if it weren't for Chitanda getting falling-down drunk on booze-filled candy.

Six empty booze-candy wrappers + one boozed-up, passed-out Chitanda out of ten.

Spoiler for Thoughts:

I wonder, in any of the ACD books the writer read, were there ever cases where it turned out there was more than one culprit?

Also, I'm almost convinced now that conflict among the student group itself is at the heart of this. So many sullen faces, and fingers pointing.

Intriguing- I like that unlike other mystery story/shows, the characters of Hyouka had considered external factors and not solely base on the written story- Like whether Hougou is aware of certain things, the props she had requested, what details did she focus or didn't focus on etc. It adds a new side to the story.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but clearly all three members seem to be aware of Oreki's 'skill' (or at least heard rumors?), all of them seem to be pitching their ideas to him and not really the Club as a whole.

Of course, Oreki had to play the 'dumb' card... >.>

P.S - As a bonus, now we know what kind of drunk Chitanda is Can't wait for the fanarts...

This episode was really funny. I laughed the hardest when that stick man rappelled down the window and the sound effect occurred.

I don't see why the window theory won't work. What if the killer walked along the edge of the building and back to the window that leads to the room he was suppose to explorer. No one can see him doing that and also there was definitely enough time for the killer to do that.

Then the suspect can be narrowed down to those who explored first floor individually.

Humour me if you all would:

1. "Kounosu silently lowers a secured rope from her window down the building and climbs down."
- Seems impossible because she'd be spotted by the others, right? Look back to the last episode, where they show the building before going in. There's a spot before where the building protrudes out that could be hidden from everyone's sight.
2. "She steps in from the lower level of that area, where the window was already opened."
- The grass was only checked directly outside of Kaitou's window, so it's plausible that the other parts might not have been untouched. Also, as they check each room on Kaitou's side before reaching the end, the two rooms they first check have open windows.
3. "She sneaks behind Kaitou and silently kills him."
- The fact that the writer wanted minimal blood implies that the murder method was a non-bloody one (nothing like a stabbing). Also, no strangulation burns are present, and a knife wound would have created more blood, especially with the severed arm to include. Add to that the fact that nobody heard the murder despite being decently close in a creaky old building.
4. "Kounosu then proceeds to cut off Kaitou's arm post-mortem and create the locked room mystery."
- Once Kaitou was dead, misdirection was required. Note how there isn't any blood between the body and the severed arm. If the arm had been cut off before death, not only would there have been loud screaming, there would have been involuntary muscle reactions, which would have flung blood everywhere. Kounosa carefully placed the arm in the proper place to make it seem like part of the murder.

In order to create the locked room, Kounosu then swapped her key for Kaitou's and placed it near his severed arm. She then locks the door from the inside (maybe the key wasn't even needed for this), then escapes out the trapdoor next to the safe, which is probably connected right back to the room she originally entered from, where the rope was waiting for her again. A stage generally has an upstage and a downstage (where actors rise up to the stage from or drop out of sight from). Here is what a proscenium stage typically looks like- matches the floor plan pretty well, no? Even when Kaitou first enters and stomps on the floor, there's a hollow sound that suggests there's a connected underground portion. "Why not sneak in that way?" you may ask. The trapdoor was likely closed, and opening it would make a lot of noise, much like the window. That wouldn't be a concern after the murder though.
5. "What points you to Kounosu, and what was the motive?"
- That's just one possible modus operandi. What points me to Kounosu was the tip that said she had exceptional ability in climbing, and she was the only one that went upstairs from Kaitou's side, while the others went off in pairs in the opposite direction (Episode 8). "But that could have been anyone who ended up in her position since the keys were all laid out!". Watch carefully: Kaitou grabs the first key, then Kounosa is already reaching out towards the keys. Whichever Kaitou picked, she could have matched it. She also seems to have strong knowledge of how buildings like this were laid out. As for the motive, it's not really something that can be extensively established with the few facts we have on hand. I wish I could say that it was a personal hatred from a connecting event prior to the murder, but the film simply starts with everyone heading to the building and suggests there's nothing really between them. Ergo, I'm kind of pointed towards the potential that Kaitou was holding something she wanted, or maybe that locked safe had something in it. I can't really compose anything else at the moment. Maybe the target was never even planned, but Kaitou died because he happened to be in that very room.
Seriously, don't be afraid to dissect this and point out everything that could be wrong. I want to tweak it to potentially find the right answer.

There is still the problem of the window being hard to open, as well as no evidence of the ground outside being disturbed.

But they only showed the ground outside the window, and that is pretty easy to get around. The grass is pretty tall and thick so it wouldn't leave that much of a track if the killer was careful to cover the path. Also, it is possible for the victim to open the window for the killer as the victim may not be aware he is targeted.

What you're implying means that Kaitou either opened the window for someone hanging from a rope ridiculously for an unknown reason, or that he opened it beforehand for the murderer to coincidentally enter through.

The former seems a little ridiculous, and the latter would be based too much on chance for it to plan a murder around. I will say the former is possible as a bit of sly persuasion could have convinced Kaitou that the killer was hanging there for some reason, but once again, it seems far-fetched.

Also, recall that nobody heard the murder occurring. If that window had been opened during the murder, the chances of someone in a nearby window hearing the sounds involved would drastically increase.

Which would still require him or her to be standing on the grass.

I can't really speculate about a possible motive, since they never showed what happened before they were on their way to the building (interactions, who's friend with who, etc.).

this episode was very interesting specially for hearing atsushi abe with an evil voice, and mariya ise with that tone i love, and two really funny scenes though the first is because i tougth the heroine farted, but later i found it was an hiccup, and the other is that the subs took the funniest meaning of "chao desu", the whole mystery detective confronting different points of view really interested me, it had a umineko feel(for the meta position of the characters), though from what i readed the LN of this predates umineko in years.
