Can you give us an example by pointing to a timestamp in some episode where this music plays?

I've been looking for one. I remember we first heard it during a Chihaya match with another girl. But so far, I haven't found the episode. Maybe I should search back through this thread to find out which episode it was because I'm pretty sure a few people including me commented on it then.

It's often played when the team or a player is at the low point and steels himself for a fight to the top. It's usually a turning point scene. The music reflects this rising spirit. Does anyone know the name of this piece?
Is it Shoubu no Yukue? That would be my best guess, without an exact reference from an episode. Although, it could be Shouri wo Tsukame, which is usually the victory type song. Hopefully, that helps.

Thanks, I'll try those. I'm still trying to find an episode time reference. But there are a lot of episodes to go through. I did find the posts in the thread where a couple of us talked about the new music, so I think it first appeared somewhere in episodes 4 - 6 during the regional tournament. I forgot that it had debuted that early.

Edit: I found a music cue! It debuted super in the series during a Tskuba POV of all people. It's in episode 3; start time is 16:41 and runs until 18:41. (CR time stamps.) It has an upbeat tempo not as martial as I thought. I compared Shoubu no Yukue and Shouri wo Tsukame. They weren't it, but thank you, thundrakkon, for your suggestions. I have the OST now, so I can walk through each song in turn until I find it. If you want to hear what I've been asking about, you can check out episode 3.

Ah, that song. It is Zekkouchou! from the Chihayafuru Original Soundtrack & Character Song 2 album. It's actually a song from season 1. Strange how we didn't notice it until season 2 came around.

Thank you!! I listened to all of the 2nd season OST midday and was mightily disappointed not to hear it. I was absolutely certain that it was new this season. I don't recall hearing it all in s1. Hm. Maybe that's a good excuse to watch all of s1 listening for it. (As if I really needed an excuse.)

There it is! Woohoo (I'm well aware I'm the only one who likes that face )

Anyway solid episode, liked most of it sadly enough the clip show was really unnecessary.

Chihaya is handicapped for the individual tournament, she is bound to lose at some point. Interesting question could be if she does lose it could be against Arata or Shinobu, for a more dramatic effect. Arata hasn't registered yet that Chihaya is injured, since she also trying to hide it. Final A class could/should be Arata vs Shinobu. Taichi is also a big question mark seems he is "out" of it again because of Arata symdrome... but finally he admits it Arata is his "E N E M Y"

Terrific episode. Lots of shipping fuel burned in this episode. Sumire was especially funny. Chihaya is clearly attracted to Taichi, although in the end she lies back and thinks of karuta instead--what a time for a mini-recap!!! Ironic that this time Taichi was asleep, and missed his chance...at least he doesn't have to suffer the way his fans will.

In that exchange with Arata, Taichi was wretchedly small. He knows Chihaya wants all three of them to be friends, but even so he insists instead on considering Arata to be his enemy. His reaction is all too human, and all too selfish. It puts his romantic feelings in a selfish light. More, given the show's core theme of team over individual, the moment places Taichi on the outside of where the narrative will inevitably go. Taichi has a lot of growing up still to do.

I really liked when Chihaya was thankful for her team's victory, regardless of her own injury. She has a great heart. She is awake, in contrast to Taichi, who is asleep in more ways than one.

The title poem is the first poem of the Hyakunin Isshu. Here is Mostow's translation:

In the autumn fields
the hut, the temporary hut,
its thatch is rough
and so the sleeves of my robe
are dampened night by night with dew.

The poem provides the image of a peasant at night in the fields during the harvest, in a temporary hut built for the purpose of harvesting the grain. Since the poet is the emperor Tenji Tenno, the poem alludes to Taichi, the emperor of his team, likewise asleep in a temporary dwelling away from his home in Tokyo. Further, since the poem is the first in the collection, it marks a new beginning for the narrative. The team drama is over, with Mizusawa's victory. A new story, with perhaps different or additional themes, is about to begin.

Eh, so both Kana and Chihaya are participating in the tournament after all. It's okay for Kana since it seems like her injury was nothing serious, but Chihaya is a complete fool to want to play in spite of the doctor's advice. What is she hoping to accomplish? She's in for a harsh reality check. She's going to get completely crushed. I understand her desire to play, but there's no point if you can't give your all. I'd even say it's disrespectful to think you can win with such a handicap. This is A class, girl.

The infamous NTR face is back. That didn't take long. Taichi has finally come out and said it: he sees Arata as an enemy and not a friend. I remember arguing he saw him as a rival and not an enemy. I was wrong. It's quite sad that their friendship is one-sided. Poor Arata has no idea how Taichi really feels about him.

Arata is planning to move to Tokyo, but not until he graduates high school. That means the team won't be reunited. Taichi doesn't want to play as a team with him again anyway. First, he needs to win the tournament. I'm quite confident he can do it. I love Shinobu, but I think she really needs to experience a loss right now. Her attitude can be pretty nasty. I liked Arata's reaction to her snarky comment: he just laughed it off. He can read her like an open book.

Yep, that mini recap was completely needless. We had a full recap not that long ago. Stop wasting precious time!

The recap was frustrating, but I think it was driven more by the demands of time rather than anything else. Certain things had to happen in this episode: the award ceremony, an evaluation of Chihaya's injury, the conversation between Arata & Taichi (I wasn't expecting that; I expected the others), and the set-up for the individual competitions. Madhouse clearly wanted to end with Chihaya starting to realize that she made a mistake to compete. My guess when they timed out those scenes, they had an oops! moment & realized that had some time left over. Solution: insert a song and a quick recap. I'll forgive them because sometimes practicality wins.

I need to re-watch the episode's big surprise a.k.a the conversation between Arata & Taichi and its aftermath before I feel confident commenting on it. There's a lot there to think about.

Taichi gave off some Light Yagami-esque vibes (teehee, same VA), which was interesting to watch.

Wish they didn't have to put the recap in but as LKK said, I can understand why, given how busy this episode was. Given that we're getting closer and closer to the end of this season, it should be no surprise that Chihaya will likely lose, which should bring more focus on the Queen and Arata. Later in her match, she might find that she can take a card or two, or may inevitably end up using her right hand, but with so much going on at once, I'm hoping this won't be the case.

I'm really getting tired of those flashbacks. They could have found something else to fill the episode, seriously >_>

I suspect I'd have appreciated the recap more if I hadn't spent the last week re-watching choice bits of the tournament anyway because ep19 was so great...

The recap was awful, especially after they just had one. There is no excuse for it. At this point I'd rather they put in anime only scenes then this slow pacing, repeated scenes, and recaps.

The story is still great of course but the direction is definitely not as good as last year at all. I really think some anime only scenes would have helped the pacing a lot. I don't mean anything major that would change events of the story just a little scene here and there.

As for the whole Taichi/Arata enemy thing of course I am disappointed in Taichi but I don't believe deep down he really sees Arata as an enemy. His previous thoughts don't match that at all. But I think it is easier for Taichi to think of Arata as an enemy then to realize he cares for the guy who might take away the girl he loves. But still Taichi is being an idiot.

I hope Arata does come to Tokyo though because it will move things (such as feelings) forward.

As for Chihaya she is being an idiot too for playing the game while injured but I have a lot of sympathy for her. You don't get many chances to play this tournament (only 3) and she has become a stronger player than last year. I understand why she wouldn't want to give up on her chance to play even if it is foolish.

That's because Taichi is a coward. Despite his mother teaching him never to start a sentence with the word 'but', Taichi makes a lot of excuses.
If anything, this is forward development on his part because he's finally admitted stance on their "friendship".

I disagree, I mean if your goal is to be the top, then you'd better play every tournament you can, the experience will help you out a lot even if you have to use a weak hand to do it with. It could be a learning experience for her.

oh and the Arata thing, you're most likely going to be seeing his NTR face/taichi acting like a punk ass bitch(seriously he is when it comes to arata and chihaya I mean even arata assumed that the dude had the balls to ask her out already all the way back in S1!) throughout the whole show. since the "love triangle" relies of caricatures of men(namely taichi, don't know about Arata yet) to function. I don't even pay attention to those parts since its false tension. (based on the fact that the "will they won't they" "who will chihaya end up with" has to continue throughout the whole series to keep it going for dram's sake)

I mean its foolish to play when you are injured and you can end up hurting yourself worse. Not foolish to want to play even if you can't win.

She's playing with her left hand. Her right one won't feel strain.

Yeah sure but whose to say in the heat of the moment she won't accidentally use her right hand. She is trained to use her right hand not her left.
