Just watched Gundam Seed...

Well, what a bloody trip!

And I loved every second of Seed. I still have Destiny to follow on to but I wondered if there were anymore similar animes - obviously other Gundam seasons - to Seed.

Firstly, I was particularly fond of Seed's opening theme of two old friends being reunited on the battlefield on opposite sides. Any others with this scene?

Secondly, when Kira and his friends were taken by the Earth Forces aboard the Archangel and eventually enlisted. Any other shows worthy of note when untrained civilians caught in the crossfire decide to do what they can?

Thirdly, whilst on the subject of the characters, I did enjoy the grand scope of just how many different characters were introduced...
Spoiler for plot:
...a lot of people played part in the story and I loved the scope of characters.

The thing I always love about watching the Gundam animes is the frivolous battles of epic scales. Entire armies and armadas are obliterated in the blink of an eye, poor mooks in standard mobile suits are simply flies to the overpowered mecha that give the show it's name sake.

Although I'm not such a fan of the invincible super mech theme at times I do enjoy the battles. Any just real good mech combat animes out there?

And I've attached a list of what I've seen in the past and also enjoyed if anyone thinks I've missed something!

And yes, I have The Legend of Galactic Heroes ready to go after Destiny!!

Spoiler for size:

Thanks in advance!

I highly recommend Patlabor and also Rahxephon. Rahxephon can be quite confusing at times but the story really goes deep and not at all shallow.

Watch Gundam Zeta or Unicorn if you haven't.

Sora o Kakeru Shoujo, Rinne no Lagrange & Star Driver have really good mech battles, plot, and characters. Each of them have unexpected plot twists and deep story lines that make you compelled to watch more.

But the OP already watched Code Geass and Macross Frontier. Hope he can enjoy The Girl who Leaps Through Space since it contains references that only hardcore mecha fans like him could enjoy. Check his list of the first post of what he watched.

Just a little warning: when you watch Destiny (series), don’t invest too much on Shinn. You’ll be very disappointed if you do. Root for Kira or Athrun instead . If you allow me to go further in warning you, then I suggest you to drop Destiny altogether if you LOVE SEED coz IMO Destiny really ruin not only the story we get from SEED but also some characters from the original. It's a mess

As for my suggestion, I don’t see Broken Blade on your list. It’s a sweet bloody mecha OVA. Based on what you’re looking for (mecha battles, friends become enemies in battlefield, civilians caught in the crossfire, grand scope of characters), the only drawback of this anime is that it’s too short/unfinished. You can follow the story further in the original manga though.

Broken Blade or the original Gundam (I think the original Gundam is on Crunchyroll).

I'll have to second RahXephon, it being pretty much the only mecha anime besides SEED that I like, lol..

For just more sci-fi/war anime, you really should check out the Seikai no Monshou series...

Thanks for the selections, guys!

I've got the original Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta now, I'll get to them after Destiny.

Broken Blade looks great and will definitely look into it and the others have been added to my list of animes to source.

Thanks, guys!

You must absolutely watch Gundam Unicorn after watching Original MSG and Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack!

I mean watch in this order:

1) Original Gundam
2) Zeta
3) Char's counterattack
and after that
4) Gundam Unicorn

Double Zeta Gundam is optional

Have you seen Vandread? Aired 12 years ago, 2 seasons.

It's one of my all time favorite mech genre classics.

Third Break Blade, and if you come to love the style of combat in Break Blade, I'd suggest Escaflowne TV(the movie has a similar style, but a diff theme; i.e. not quite as good as the TV series). Esca TV has some very nice combat, and a wonderful story to boot.

Just puttin' this out there; the original Gundam(0079) has a lot of basic similarities to some of the beginning parts to SEED, but it's REALLY outdated and may not be for you esp if your a newer fan.

Seconding Escaflowne!

Not really mecha, but if you enjoy epic battles and such in a sci fi setting, I would really check out Crest of the Stars. Very very good as well.

I finished Destiny this afternoon and I finally understand what you mean... I preferred Athrun all along anyway, damn I wanted Shinn to die... :3

Well I'm trying to track down the Special Edition movies and see how much better they are!

Started watching Break Blade and I am really enjoying it so thanks again all for that recommendation. Cleo is pretty cute!

And frubam, I don't mind older animes. In fact I still prefer SDF-1 to Frontier so I will get to Kiduo Senshi Gundam eventually!

And looking into Escaflowne too!

Cheers, blokes (and blokettes?)!

I wouldn't say that Special Edition is significantly better than the series. But in terms of length alone, it's definitely an improvement (MUCH LESS RECAPS & FLASHBACKS! HORRAAY ). Plus, you get to see things more from Athrun's POV in these movies which means much less annoying Shinn. They also added some new materials at the ending (last movie) which you can enjoy even if only briefly .
