watch slayers next. it's comedy, drama and a little bit of romance. good characters/story/comedy/bgm/voice acting. as far as the animation goes ... it depends on your preferrence.
IT gets really serious/badass towards the end.I personally think it's the best season of the 3. that's why i want to recommmend this season. It's called an anime classic for a reason.

you can check out episodes on hulu.com/

http://www.hulu.com/the-slayers-next

also welcome to the nhk
episodes are on hulu but ti's dubbed but you can see if you'll like the show or not based on that
http://www.hulu.com/welcome-to-the-nhk

I've personally never seen the dub but dubs are better now a days right so.

Those two are rather old animes. It might be quite difficult to search for them but I can help you through PM if you want.

How about

Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade
Baccano!
Ergo Proxy
Ghost Hound
Hakaba Kitarou
Hikaru no Go
Kurenai
Monster
Moyashimon
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Nodame Cantabile
Oh! Edo Rocket
Sakamichi no Apollon (nearly complete)
Summer Wars
Tsuritama (nearly complete)
Uchuu Kyoudai (supposedly another forty or so episodes to come)

Most all of these have male leads or, like Abenobashi, a male/female couple. Baccano! has a large, mixed cast and a slow first episode. Patience will be rewarded. A sequel to Moyashimon begins next month.

I don't know if you watched both seasons of Black Lagoon, but the "Second Barrage" is the better of the two.

Give those animes Kirito recommended a second chance if you want to kill time, if only you want to watch it separately. Each of them gets better in terms of story progression.

Air - from same creator Angel Beats, Clannad and Kanon 2006. You can also try AnoHana.
Ao No Exorcist - D.Gray Man, both shows are about exorcists.
Black Lagoon - Canaan, Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom and Jormungand. all about gun action.
Darker Than Black - even more reasons to watch Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Guilty Crown - not exactly the same but what about Death Note? I know you said main as a lead but you could try Ga-Rei Zero. They are similar in a sense that main chara goes bad at some point.
InuYasha - Nurarihyon no Mago. Maybe Chrno Crusade since main hero is not human.
Kaichou Wa Maid-Sama! - you could try Mayo Chiki
Kore wa Zombie Desu ka - another good reason to watch Angel Beats
Mirai Nikki - Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero
Please Teacher!! - Ano Natsu de Matteru
Spice and Wolf - maybe 5 Centimeters per Second. Chobits since main heroines are not humans
Valkyria Chronicles - Berserk, war set back in knight period. Tales of the Abyss could be a nice choice if you want something more light heated

As a bonus I'll also name Baccano, Great Teacher Onizuka and Steins; Gate.
