Well I am certainly sorry I replied back to Graveyard Duck.

Although I don't know if the discussion is relevant to the series as a whole but to the episode it is as the episode does talk about slavery, serfdom and servants. At least I found that interesting about the episode.

The hero first thinks the girls are slaves, he is corrected by the maid that they are serfs and in the end they become hired workers of the demon queen. At least I found that movement interesting. What it will mean for the series as a whole I don't know. But I think it is unfair to say it has nothing to do with the series.

I didn't mean to turn it into a discussion on what "slavery" is though so I do apologize. I did erase my reply to Graveyard Duck to not continue this, I don't care about winning but I also don't appreciate being told I don't "understand these things" which is why I kept the discussion going.

No one actually cares, you know? Why not discuss the definition of slavery/serfdom through private messages? This isn't weknowhistoryandliketoargueaboutit.com/forum, it's a thread dedicated for us to discuss Maoyuu.

I'm actually having scary visions here..

"Hey, hon, finally home from work, guess what happened today!?"
"I have no idea.."
"Well, checkit, I managed to convince animesuki that I know ma history!"
"Really? That's...cool.."
"Yeah, you shudda seen 'em, the argument lasted over three pages but I won, I WON!"
"Ok, babe, calm down"
"I wrote down ten electronic history points for myself in my notebook!"
"You what?
"Yeah!"
"Ok, what about the other people in the thread? Did they care much for your off-topic rants?"
"Babe?"
"WELL, DID THEY?"
"Yeah, I thi...."
*door slams shut*
"Babe?"

Other than that, yeah, love this anime (on-topic contribution, you know?).

(Post made before you edited yours, Kirarakim, but still relevant and was obviously not aimed at just you!)

I don't think the definition of slavery's what they're arguing about.

At least at first, it was more about whether Demon Queen had really freed the sisters. Which is indeed debatable. The simple fact that she could, at any moment, for any reason, hand them back to their old lord would point to "no".

But let's say it doesn't matter because she'll never do that. OTOH, let's say the lord learns of the sisters' whereabouts and come to complain. What then? It depends. Maybe DQ throws money at him and convinces him to free the girls, all tight and legal. Then they're really freed, but that hasn't happened yet. Maybe she tells him to pound sand, and then... what? It goes to a judge? To the local lord of the village they're in? Who may or may not be free to decide either way.

Or maybe everyone forgets about it. It's not like every lord would obsess about every escaped serf.

There's also the question of how free they are in comparison to other commoners. You could say she's at the mercy of the Demon Queen, but aren't all peasants at the mercy of the rich and powerful anyway?

No, Head Maid called them slaves. Hero thought humans were too righteous to keep slaves. DQ explained that they were serfs, so he was technically right, but I don't think anyone in that room really cared about the difference.

Thank you! I admit we certainly got side tracked but it's not the first (and I am sure it's not the last time) it will happen in a discussion.

What we were initially debating was about the series it just turned into something else and I do apologize for that but we weren't trying to prove we know our history. That wasn't the point.

My mistake then. I knew someone said slaves and someone said serfs.

Maybe the characters don't see a difference but I do think it is interesting that the series pointed it out. The series could have easily just made them slaves right?

Hey, those discussions were pretty much on topic I'd say. Discussions on topics that's probably only mentioned briefly within the anime have been discussed in this forum all the time. Only, they usually have their own sub-threads for them.

I think it was to point out the humans' hypocrisy. They say they're too civilized for slaves, but they keep serfs. And the hero's naivety. He swallowed that, just like he swallowed that humans were good and demons were evil.

Same for me. IMO compressing all those narrative into just 12 episodes will be problematic at best. Just look at how Zetman and Code Breakers have become. I'd rather have them take the "unfinished story" approach like Spice and Wolf than rushing the plot.
Take into account that Spice and Wolf started out as only one season but then received another.

It's entirely possible, though not certain, that if Maoyuu Maou Yuusha does well enough they'll want to make another set of 12 episodes for a total of 24 (plus one or two bonus episodes on the discs, I'd imagine).

Even that might not be nearly enough to complete the full story, I'm guessing, but it's better to not worry too much about the current length until we have a way to tell if the show was successful or not.

It is. There was no wasted exposition in this episode, everything is relevant.

Speaking of relevance, there's also the point of Education being important if the Demon Lord is to get anywhere with changing things. However, this being set in a sort-of medieval setting, THAT idea also has its own set of problems obviously.

And yes, absolutely nothing is wasted, except for the Useless Meat. Which is the Hero's anyway.

I think the big worry is because both the opening and ending have spoilers that happen around chapter 21 of the manga and so far in the last 2 ep we have covered about 2.5 ch with some major all be it not story required cuts to the matrial.

Umm... did anyone else catch that during the scene with Maou was alone with the maid she said she needed to accomplish something on behalf of her master/owner? Was she referring to Hero... or are there things going on in the background we should be watching out for?

They are not spoilers if you don't confirm them as spoilers.

Yes, remember they gave themselves to each other, so like the Demon Queen owns Hero, Hero also owns Demon Queen. Just rewatch episode 1 for their promise to each other, that's basically what she was talking about there.

To do all 5 volumes of the novel based on the pacing I have seen so far, I'm guessing you'll need at least 3-4 seasons.

I could be wrong, but the OP suggests that this season is going to go past where the manga is currently translated. That's a LOT of content to cover within their time constraints o_0

Dear Crunchyroll please make up your mind!
Is it Demon King or Demon Queen?
You call her the king in the 1st episode but now you call her Queen in episode 2!
Using both is only confusing viewers and readers so stick to one title.
There's even a discussion at wikipedia on what the Female MC should be called.

Maou.

This has actually been the topic of heated discussion here already. It would be better to not restart that fight, I think.

The problem with Crunchy's translation (unless it's changed since the version I saw) was when Head Maid was yelling to the two of them it was just translated as the single word "queen." That doesn't get the full impact of why that scene was actually rather amusing: she's yelling "Demon King/queen/lord/great evil being of unlimited power responsible for all the evil in the world! Over here Demon King/queen/lord/etc." loud enough for most of the village to hear her. Failing to make that clear, more than switching between king and queen, was a mistake on their part in my opinion.

It's varying by speaker. The Head Maid calls her Queen. The Hero and the Demon King still call her Demon King. The Japanese terms of address vary slightly as well, with the Hero and Demon King using just Maou (魔王) and the Head Maid adding an honorific for Maou-sama (魔王様). I assume the different terms in English is supposed to reflect this.
