I'm more shocked that it's coming out so soon A full month before The Evil Within (granted, it's probably only in Japan).

A new HD Fatal Frame would be terrifying

I probably should also mention that the live stream announced the new movie... Actually, two new movies. One Japanese movie with cute/creepy girls in an all-girl school, and the other a Hollywood adaption...

...By the producer of the Resident Evil movie franchise....

Now in higher resolutions!

Man, the most messed up enemies are still that "Broken neck woman" or "Woman on all fours" type ghosts

Kudos to them for keeping this close to the chest. Hoping this gets localized.

What does "Nuregarasu" mean in English?

It seems that Tecmo so far is continuing to use Female Protagonists and Female "head ghosts." I wonder if it's traditional for them that female horror characters and ghosts are more compelling than male ones.

Literally? It means "Wet Crow".

Wet= Nure
Garasu= Crow

Basically it's Fatal Frame: Downpour /jk

Yes, women make terrifying ghosts.... Especially Asian girls.

As for female protagonists...Well... They give off a feeling of... Helplessness...

People have been translating it as Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden since Nuregarasu/wet crow is supposed to be way to refer to black hair, don't know if this is actually accurate or not so don't quote me on this.

interesting doesn't even cut it, I'm seeing so many allusions to ponder - so much hype!

Spoiler for thoughts, may be spoilerific:

Thanks, though that does sound odd.

I hope it doesn't go as much off the rails in some ways to its predecessors like Silent Hill: Downpour did. That game was good but could have gone further in some places.

If you're helpless, you're helpless. Male characters without the Camera Obscura aren't in a better position to fight the ghosts than female characters without it. In fact, when I was playing as Kei Amakura in Fatal Frame 3 (the first male playable character in the Fatal Frame series), I felt more helpless than I did when playing as the female player characters since Kei has a long section of gameplay without the Camera Obscura, and even with one, his Camera Obscura is the most limited of all the playable characters and his special ability is largely worthless, making fights more difficult. Just how helpless he was can be seen here:

I also heard that Fatal Frame 4 was made too easy. This new instalment makes me wonder if it'll be too easy as well.

Any word on who the new voice actors for this game are? Rie Tanaka played the "head ghost" in Fatal Frame 4, but she was underused in that role. Still, she let out a hell of a scream in one of the game's more important cutscenes, starting at 0:50 in the following video:

It's the fifth installment to the series? Wow, silly me. I could have sworn that this was a remake for the first game. Anyways, the game looks really pretty! I guess I have to buy a Wii U now since the series has always been my favorite.

Nah, the first game was about mansion, ropes, and dismemberment.

This one looks to have a main theme around water.

The third game had plenty of bits about Water--the main couple the game is about has a major event when it's raining, for instance, and it's always snowing in the "Manor of Sleep" (along with some aqueducts running in some deeper places there).

But anyway, is anyone getting a bit tired of the tropes that are being used again and again in this game series? Aside from the "helpless heroines" bit I've already mentioned, it seems that every non-portable Fatal Frame game focusses on an occult ritual gone wrong. Can't we have users of the Camera Obscura use it to solve a decades-old murder or something in the real world? Or get transported to a "spirit world" overlaying the real world like Silent Hill's Otherworld?

Or how about a Fatal Frame prequel set in the years when the Camera Obscura was still cutting-edge technology?

I would argue that technically all of the previous series has been about solving a decade old murder/mystery/massacre as you progress through the game and pick up notes and 'evidences' about what screwed up incident happened and who died and why.

"Transporting in the spirit world" would be like the dream world in FFIII... And the later parts it became like SH4.

yay new installment can't wait for it, I wonder is story of it?

1. Rope & Mirror "Rope Mark Appearance, Rope Maiden "Kirei""
2. Butterfly & Twins "2 Hand Chocking, Bloody Kimono "Sae""
3. Dream & Tattoo "Tattoo Mark Appearance, Tattooed Priestess "Reika"'
4. Mask & Moon Cycle "Distorted Face Reflection, Utsuwa (Shrine Maiden) "Sakuya" "

I wonder how people died in 5? maybe drowning in water or they killed themselves via a knife in the neck

dude, HD fatal frame would be terrifying. i'm still trying to get through FF2 right now. it looks like it could have been done on the PS3 generation of consoles though. (i guess that's what the Wii U is?)
