Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online -Squad Jam- [LN]

Welcome to the Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online -Squad Jam- light novel discussion thread.

A Sword Art Online spin-off novel by author Keiichi Sigsawa and illustrator Kouhaku Kuroboshi is planned for a December 2014 debut. The spin-off project will be supervised SAO's original author, Reki Kawahara.

Story premise:

Quote:
Kohiruimaki Karen is a college student with a height of 183cm.
Always suffering from a complex because of her height since puberty, she could never socialize in the real world. What changed her life was the VRMMO Gun Gale Online, a game that gained popularity after the "SAO Incident".
With her ideal virtual chibi avatar, that doesn't even have a height of 150cm, Karen wears a pink combat armor and runs around the world of Gun Gale Online as the player "Ren".
In front of Ren suddenly appears a beautiful female player with dark skin called "Pitohui" - but when she thinks she has found a friend in GGO, where female players are extremely rare...

One day, the Squad Jam, a battle royal tournament based on BoB, catches Pitohui's attention...

To be honest, I am more excited for this than anything by the original author Reki for SAO.
Not even just hating on Reki since I am a huge Kino's journey fan that Keiichi wrote.

Sinon maybe. Kirito really not too sure. Depends on which time period this novel is set on.

Given that it's the author of Kino's Journey, I'm rather looking forward to this one.

Kino no tabi's author hasn't written a good story ever since kino no tabi. I'm expecting this to be even worse than SAO because Reki actually improved(dat alicization).

I don't think so. Characterization-wise, there's no much improvement even in Alicization.

Anyway. GGO is somewhat interesting a setting; the problem with SAO has always been the characters: lack of development, lack of agency, that sort of thing. Take Kirito out of the picture and this might have a chance. After all, it's because Kirito sucks everyone's agency that the characters usually remain so dull and underdeveloped.

Does that include Allison? I know the Allison & Lillia anime had its issues but I liked what little of the Allison manga I was able to find in English. (I haven't found a translation of the original novels.)

No, it's not allowed. Thats why Kiri-chan reaction to his avatar was so funny in GGO arc.
