It's generic but can be a pretty fun show if they can pull it off. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case at the moment.
This is a main problem that I see as well. When I first heard of an adaptation, I was really really glad because the light novel was rather fun. However, the PVs were not bad but they were not exactly great either which made me a bit worried. Than the 1st episode came. To be honest, I thought it was decent but there were problems and those are the same ones you have said. I thought the handling of the premise however is fine so at least it does get across what the show will be about.

2nd episode however is good though. It finally goes into more about what the story will be about and I sure hope that they can continue to improve. The story does have a lot going for it and the start is kind of weak compared to later parts. I sure hope that they can handle it well.

Well sometimes the first episode says all about a series.

But...

There is a 3 episodes rule afterall.

Of course it doesn't means the anime will be a good series, mind Guilty Crown with its start and then its trainwreck and chaotic development .

Yes that's very true. I'm a bit more lenient so in general I give a series 6 episodes before I make a more solidified judgement. However 3 episodes definitely is still a good idea to give more than 1 episode. I still remembered about Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere where the first 3 episode was ALL about world building and character intros. It got pretty awesome right after that. But yes, Guilty Crown... I enjoyed it but agreed that it's a complete utter train wreck. *sigh I only enjoyed it for what it is but wow, it sure was bad.

But yes, seeing where the story is by episode 2, the next episode should be at a pretty awesome part in the story. Not that it's not in episode two with "baaaaka baka!" Besides, there's no henshin scene in the novel yet they made one for Touka here lol. Not that I'm really complaining but it did surprised me.

There's nothing derailing about discussing the quality of an episode and disagreeing with the said opinion. The accusation of someone derailing a thread although they're clearly not doing so, however, is derailing.

That being said, the opening's little introduction dialogue bothers me for some reason. It comes off as more cheesy than whatever it was trying to accomplish.

I don't follow the three episode rule. I watch the whole series before making a final judgement, because a story is a beginning, middle, and end, and any judgement made before the finish of the story is a work-in-progress, incomplete judgement on the work. (And don't say that you don't have the time to finish a series. People waste more time in their lives than they will ever admit)

I don't judge series by comparing them to some arbitrary rubric that's been imprinted onto me, or that I've adopted so that I can seem as cool and sophisticated as whoever made it in the first place. I have a simple rule: do I enjoy this?

If it's a serious drama, is it serious drama that's fun to watch? If it's mindless harem rom-com, is it a mindless harem rom-com that's fun to watch? Because believe it or not, there are good and bad mindless harem rom-coms.

And I don't trust first impressions. Everyone who holds that ideal sacred has obviously never seen an employee seduce the job interviewer with the perfect smile and attitude, get used to the workplace, and then slack off or abuse the job to his or her own benefit at the expense of co-workers and bosses. Or seen a student who comes off as hard-working and sincere but turns out to be selfish, manipulative, and a habitual liar. Truth is we all know in reality that people and things fake first impressions all the time, but because society holds that ideal sacred and repeats it everywhere we idolize it too so that we can feel like we're fitting in with everyone else.

With that said, I'm going to warn all the naysayers of this series: If you still don't like this by the third episode (because that's when the first story arc seems like it'll conclude), then don't stay to keep clogging up the thread with your negativity. Because after episode 3 it's going to be a more or less the same thing. People who love the whole thing about Date A Live will keep loving it; those who hate it will keep hating it.

A few quick points:

1. People can post their opinions here as long as they're on-topic and within what's allowed by the forum rules, and there's no "three-episode rule" to that statement. But...

2. ...it is also true that repeating the very same complaint week after week about issues central to the core premise or known execution style can get tiresome if not done with due consideration. At a certain point, it is reasonable to expect that the viewer should adjust their expectations based on past experience, and not just keep acting like they're surprised and upset when each episode continues in the same pattern as the previous ones. That just makes the "critic" seem foolish, and undermines their criticisms. (But I'm not saying we're at that point yet here; this isn't directed at anyone in particular.)

3. Also, short one-liners that are just meta posts are other people's opinions are not needed. Please add value to the thread with each post. Some posts above were deleted for being pointless, meta, or off-topic.

4. Unrelated to all that, please don't post anything about future novel events in this thread, even behind spoiler tags. Not even things you're looking forward to or whatever.

I'm so tempted to watch the Raws of the 2nd episode, but that would spoil everything when I would want to watch the Subbed version later... Rawrgh! *Scream of Full Power Core filled with Despair*

Hehe, the three episode rule is generally for people who don't have that much time. To be honest, I'm don't follow the rule very stricly at all and like I said before, generally I give it more around 6ish episodes (which is usually already half of a 1-cour show). And... I'm a graduate engineering student but I do try to make time for anime Yeah I Know. Priorities lol. Anime, manga, light novels, and RPGs are just too fun to give up haha.

But... I do always make sure I know what I'm getting into. If it's a comdedy show, I'm expecting comedy. Don't come into a show expecting it's something it's not. This was the case for Arcana Famiglia which was annoying. It's an otome game adapation. For some reason, many people came in expecting something different.

And yes, first impressions is good AND bad. Usually the bad side is what gets more people. Even if a character improves themselves so much over the series, some people still hate them due to their first impression. Keep your mind open about it. Remember Kanata from Little Busters!?

Anyways, just enjoy Date A Live for what it aims to be. A fun comedy show with harem, action, romance, and a bit of darkness. I do consider the premise to be fun and unique. And even though it's on a low budget, it has been doing a pretty decent job with the execution.

@ relentlessflame
Hehe. Point number 3 is important I think. It's rather annoying to see people come in and:
"Hey, this show sucks so bad. Dropped"
Doesn't really add anything.

And wow... it seems to be getting a bit depressing in here. Hehe, going to post this again!

"SHIDOU! DATE DATE DATE!!!"

@ Haiprbim
Lol! I couldn't resist and gave in to watching the raw. But I don't mind watching it again subbed!

Yeah, I used to follow the "watch everything all the way through" rule, until my free time was no longer infinite . Even a 3 episode rule is tough to stick with for too many series.

Regardless, had a pretty good start for this one. Though will say the situation does put some pressure on the MC. Keep girls happy or else the world will be messed up and/or those girls will have to be taken out with extreme prejudice. Good luck to him .

TV version of this series looks very pretty. Nico version apparently does not. I know which one I'll be watching.

As such, so far as I'm concerned, episode 2 does not yet exist.

I was impatient and went ahead with no subs. Then as I watched it, I realised subs weren't needed because I actually understood the entire episode without them.

This episode was less of a rush than the previous one, so the set-up was pretty helpful in the end. Slight improvement but hoping it'll get even better as the arc goes along because it might turn out better than expected if it built up to a good finish, rather than being stellar all the way.

Tohka's cute side came out pretty nicely because once she dropped the cold, defensive front she was quite a straightforward person, who got easily excited about things she never knew of before. Looking forward to more of these moments from her.

Tohka will destroy you soon. (EDIT: I mean she'll destroy all of us, my bad.)

Also Origami is always sooo hilarious. Especially when:

Spoiler:

EDIT: I also look forward to the ost. The OP is pretty good, but I love the BGM that comes up during the last Tohka/Shidou scene of ep2. I'm an avid player of visual novels, and that kind bgm turns up often in romance comedies like To Heart 2, and so on. It triggers this massive wave of nostalgia of several years back when I played visual novels like crazy. I don't play as much nowdays, so BGM like that really gives me the giddy feel.

She already destroyed many people with her "Baaaaka baaka!" and even some more with her "Date Date Daate!!". She will do plenty of damages.

Origami. She's freaking hilarious as well. The fact that everything she does and say but yet with a poker face is just ridiculous lol.

It pretty much shows just how innocent she really is. The very first person who showed her any kind of kindness and she almost just completely opens up to him. Really cute haha.

The production value of the first episode is pretty solid. The character designs, especially the eyes, are really well done, although it does suffer a bit from the same face syndrome.

The story and tone are kind of a mess though. It tries to go for a lot of different things, ie, sci-fi, school-life, rom-com, action, but aside from the action it really doesn't do any of the other things particularly well.

I think some of that might be attributed to the pace it's setting since it looks like we'll be done with one novel in 3 episodes it seems to be rushing a bit. I was hoping the anime wouldn't do that but oh well I'm used to it.

She just doesn't flinch at anything, does she? She even got hurt by Tohka's attack and her expression was still deadpan and unchanging.

You cannot blame her for that, seeing as Shidou was the first person ever that she could trust. Every other time she appeared, she would have been assaulted at the site she manifested in. Though this might eventually grow into emotional dependence on him.

Now, to rewatch the first episode in high quality. Haven't found time to do so and watching it on pitiful bitrates isn't doing it justice.
