Looking for two genres - "serious" and "LOLOL!"

Nothing especially specific, but must meet the following - 1080p quality. Reason? My first 1080p TV is on its way... Need to get ready!
As for something serious, I'm looking for anything similar to Monster or Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. They're more realistic I suppose.

For Comedy, the closer we can get to School Rumble, the better.
1. School Rumble seasons 1 and 2 [Completed - Favorite anime of all time]
2. Cromartie High [Completed]
3. Ouran High[Dropped]
4. Lucky Star [Dropped]
5. To Love Ru [Completed, but didn't like it very much]
6. Hayate 1st Season [Completed. Sarcastic humor was funny, but became generic and got old fast. Don't want to watch season 2.]
7. Seto no Hanayome [Completed, but was a little too "loud" for my tastes. Though it did have some LOL moments (Main character tries to buy food at carnival, but there's a gun inside every single meal LOL, or the "DUN DUN.....dun DUN DUN..." whenever the girl's buff dad would appear )].
8. Nyan Koi [Completed]
9. Gintama [Currently watching and lol'ing]

So basically, I really like School Rumble's kind of humor. Cromartie's randomness was okay, but it was a little weird at times. Seto was funny, but just a little too loud and obnoxious.

Edit: Have seen Steins;Gate and loved it, as well as World God Only Knows.

You're going to be disappointed if you're looking for lots of shows in 1080p. There aren't that many. If you subscribe to Crunchyroll ($7/month) you'll get a 1080p option and no commercials, but I'm not sure how many shows are actually mastered at this resolution. When the TV arrives, if you can connect it to a computer that will drive it at 1920x1080, then I suggest signing up for a trial subscription at Crunchyroll and watching Tsuritama for a few episodes. It doesn't have the romance of School Rumble, but it is a funny show and quite well-produced. It looks great on my TV. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is another good choice both dramatically and in terms of image quality.

Generally speaking I don't see a whole lot of improvement between 720p and 1080p for anime. Most modern shows are available at 720p; they'll certainly look better on your new television than what you're used to.

You might consider Blu-ray, especially if you have a PS3. If not, I just helped a friend buy a BR player from Amazon for about $70. The Summer Wars movie has a lot of splashy graphics effects that look good in high-definition. It's more subtly comedic than School Rumble, but it has a nice romance.

There's now a whole subforum at AOD/Mania on Blu-ray anime releases.

For comedy :
Sket Dance
Daily Lifes of Highschool Boys
Second Tsuritama
The World God Only Knows
Milky Holmes

For something serious :
Chaos;Head
Gunslinger Girl
Steins;Gate (first half might bore you because of some comedy moments, but the second half is what it gets awesome. It has 24 episodes)
Second Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Now and There, Here and There (First episode is very misleading and full of fluff, but episode 2 is what the show starts very serious)

Thanks for the tips and suggestions. And I suppose you're right about 720p vs 1080p anime. I saw World God Only Knows in 720p on a 1080p monitor and it looked really good.

Steins;Gate was awesome. I've been meaning to look into Chaos;Head. I'll check into the ones you listed. Thanks, MisaoFan.

There isn't a lot like School Rumble (best anime comedy ever).

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu has some similarities, and is another all time great comedy.

The first few episodes of Kare Kano have a similar feel to SR. Even if you don't end up finishing it, the beginning is great on its own.

You should check out Inukami for the LOL aspect. The humour is the hit or miss kind of thing though, you'll either be really annoyed or laugh like crazy (aka offensive humour). There's also Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu for the lols as well. Nichijou might also be a good choice (I found the humour to be again, hit or miss for this one too)

Bamboo Blade
Mitsudomoe
Rocket Girls
Ben-Tou

I think particularly Fumoffu and Bamboo Blade are closest to School Rumble, maybe Ika Musume and Mitsudomoe too.

Thanks all. I'm pretty sure a lot of these aren't HD... but I guess I'll look into them anyway.

Needless has both elements. It has some serious and action paced moments and sometimes it shifts into something ridiciously stupid (even in mid-combat).

Good comedy recommendations. WGOK was great, I hope they make more. Liked Haruhi when I watched it back in 07. I'll check out the rest as well. I watched the first episode of Cross Game a while back and was too sad to move onto episode 2, lol.

I tried Needless before and didn't like it. Thanks though!

It quickly gets past that. It almost seemed like Adaichi wanted to make sure you knew from the outset that this story was going to have a "serious" side. Try it again.

If you want both serious and LOL in the same show, I'd suggest Kurenai. That points to the licensed DVD (mine is on its way), but there are 720p torrents out there, one of which is a Blu-ray rip.

Have you seen Baccano? I think it would count as serious + LOL mashed together into a bloody pulp. The main characters (over a dozen of them) are over the top in ways that range from endearing to horrifying, in some cases both at the same time. The English dub is excellent and fits the setting. You can see all the gory details on the big screen with the Blu-ray.

Also, I definitely recommend continuing Haruhi. The second season has some good stuff (though it's up to you how many of the Endless Eight episodes to watch), and the movie is a work of art.
