Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro

Another series picked up by CR to stream this spring.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...atsutaro-anime

Background and story:Adapted from a manga by Tetsuya Chiba,Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro!!focuses on the traditional Japanese sport of sumo, following aspiring sumo wrestler Matsutaro Sakaguchi, a man with strength far beyond ordinary people. Although he is far stronger than anyone else when it comes to sumo, his carefree personality may prove to be his greatest weakness.

The new anime stars actor and singer Ken Matsudaira as the titular Matsutaro, along with Yuko Mizutani, also known as Pinoko from theBlack Jackseries, as Reiko Minami; Kozo Shioya, probably best known for Majin Buu from theDragon Ball Zseries, plays Shin Tanaka; Issei Futamata, who also voiced Mikiyasu Shinshi from thePatlaborseries, plays Shimada-sensei; Bin Shimada, who also voiced Dr. Hell inRobot Girls Z, plays Nishio; and Masaharu Satou, who was also Hank fromShining Hearts, is cast as the Company President.

****

Just watched ep 1, and Matsutaro is a rather disagreeable personality, to say the least. But I am kinda curious about the idea itself behind the series, so I will try out another few eps.

Wasn't expecting much of this but as i had nothing better to do today I figured I'd give it a watch.

The whole thing seemed very old-fashioned in style, and the OP suited that massively.
The main character is a total obnoxious jerk, but does he stop being a jerk?
At least there were consequences for his actions.

May well give it a few more episodes to see how it goes.

I actually really liked this one, strength athletics is my forte IRL, so I had to give this a look. The main character is a jerk, but that's the fun. He's hilarious, especially the ending of the episode. There wasn't any indication of how he'll get into sumo, so we'll have to see next episode.

I loved it too. It had the charm of Ashita no Joe, down to the mood and art style, except Joe wasn't such a jerk.
I'm curious to see how Matsutaro will change and develop.

The chance to watch a modern anime done in showa style feels almost surreal, but that also makes it pretty unique.

It's rare that I skip a sports show of any kind, but the main character in this is just too repulsive for me to stomach. What an awful human being.

I was fearing this wouldn't get subbed. There's no way I'm skipping an adaptation from something this old.

It was fun to have such a jerk and delinquent as protagonist. But it's hard to say anything about this until we get to the sumo.

Good to see Matsutaro clobber the sumo. I was hoping his super strength shown in the first episode would translate to fighting prowess. The daydream about Reiko is damn hilarious.

Nice to see Sakaguchi teaching those stuck-up sumoists a lesson. Sumo is not Pro Wrestling? Every professional sport mast cater to the audience - since it is the audience that pays the bill!

This is actually one of the funniest anime I've ever seen. Japanese humor doesn't always do it for me, but this one is perfect. I also know very little about sumo, so getting a little glimpse into the sumo culture is interesting too.

I could live without the non-stop nose picking and fart jokes, but the manga is a product of its time in that sense.

I have come to enjoy this show quite a bit, after a rough start. When you consider just how subversive Matsutarou's personality makes him in Japan - never mind sumo - it adds a layer of interest, even if the guy is a total jerk.

I'm not a fan of bodily humor either, but that's not the only humor it relies on, luckily.

I don't see episode 11 on Crunchyroll - wonder what's going on. I think it's usually out by now.

(Guess it's on a break until July, I just saw).

I don't know if anyone is still watching this, but the most recent episode (13) was really strong - very intense.

Indeed it was. I was actually cheering for Sakaguchi and I'm glad he won too.
