Shadow Realms (Bioware online RPG) [PC]

Right, here's an interesting little project from Bioware.

Think [The Secret World] + [Fable Legends] + [Evolve] + [Dungeons and Dragons].

Essentially, it's an online RPG 4v1 game with the setting of [The Secret World], the 4v1 set up of [Evolve] and a playable 'gamemaster' of [Fable Legends].... Or [Dungeons and Dragons].

Quote:
Setting:

In Shadow Realms, Modern Heroes on Earth are being awakened and recruited, because of magical powers they never knew they had, to fight in a new and dangerous war against the Shadow Legions of Embra. The Shadow Legions, who have been battling on Embra for years against the members of the Radiant Empires, have gained new strength with the coming of a powerful, unknown force that we call the Shadowlords. And, they have just figured out how to leave Embra and invade Earth.

Setting overview: Embra
Quote:
Classes:

Warrior
Equipped with cutting-edge tactical gear from Earth, the Warrior excels when going toe-to-toe with enemies, crushing them with brute force. The adrenaline of close quarters combat fuels their ability to withstand damage.

Assassin
The sleek and mobile Assassin uses the cover of shadows to deal lethal amounts of damage. An expert in acrobatics, the Assassin dashes into melee range to quickly dispose of enemies and dodges back out to avoid any retaliation.

Wizard
Think of the Wizard as the smartest kid in class, who uses their mind to bend the elements and alter reality to take out enemies or benefit allies. A master of the arcane, Wizards burn and electrocute any hostile foes unlucky enough to cross their path.

Cleric
The Cleric channels the newly found magical energies through both modern and fantastical weaponry to both deadly and restorative effects, as the tactical situation may need.

Ranger
Rangers use their gifts to call the beasts of Embra and Earth to arms against the Shadow Legion. Combined with the tools of modern warfare and keen senses, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Warlock
Warlocks challenge the Shadowlord with their mastery of the darkness. They dabble in the arts of binding demons and conjuring volatile powers for the greater good of Earth and Embra.

Shadowlord
The mysterious Shadowlords reign over the many forces of the Shadow Legions. Their powers and forms vary greatly, but all have domain over the Heroes adventures, and all are bent on the destruction of Earth and Embra.

I'd be somewhat excited / optimistic if it wasn't Bioware.

It's not even the BioWare studio that brought us Dragon Age and Mass Effect, it's the Austin-based studio that brought us Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Well I'm okay with the idea and especially the setting (totally chunnibyou), but I need to see how it actually plays out... For one thing how does this gamemaster set up work in a real time (i assume) action?

EDIT:

Well, that didn't take long...

So it's just the random EA studio given the BioWare title. Even less enthused.

The concept doesn't seem bad, but I've got to wonder why so many devs presenting at Gamescom, etc. don't have proper video capture setups - pointing a video camera at the screen isn't exactly the best way to show off your latest creative spawn, now is it?

Uh, that's completely wrong. BioWare Austin was founded in March of 2006, more than a year (but less than 2) before EA purchased BioWare.

The studio was made to develop TOR which was basically an EA title though.

So now we just need to see the solo player's PoV. Because from that video, all you're doing is randomly possessing/releasing one minion to get forever chain-combo'd by the 4 Assassin Creed phase jumpers.

It's... Okay? I guess? Fable Legends with a different colour palette?

I'm definitely not seeing the Table-top gamemaster vibe that they're going for because it's too cluttered with magical flashes.
