My larger point is that the trailer offers zero reassurance to me about its prospects so I can't get excited about it. Especially when you have Mari making a troll face in it. That sort of character does not belong in the Evangelion universe period.

Each of the trailers has shown distinctly different kinds of scenes. Action, character, surreal... to focus on one or two frames and say, "I can't believe they're focusing on this!!"... well, it just seems wrong, y'know?

This is why, for this part, I prefer the manga than the anime. There, Shinji actually find Kaworu weird and annoying and he doesn’t like him one bit. So, no BL there (unless you count the “CPR” that Kaworu done to Shinji ).

Maybe I haven't. I remember reading it until vol. 10. After that, I read random chapters that took place during the events of EoE. Did something happened to ShinjixKaworu before that?

I *think* Kaworu got introduced in Volume 9 of the manga (where he killed the cat and turned Shinji off).

Volume 12 (starting the EoE chain of events) was released about two and half years ago...

Volume 13 (the newest book) was released last week.

And no, there's no ShinjixKaworu in the manga. Just as there's no ShinjixAsuka.

Howevr, the latest turn of events in the manga (read SPOILER for more) has left me with a REALLY bad taste in my mouth...

Asuka is prepared to fight the Eva Series. Shinjii shows up in Eva-01 and single-handedly defeats them. They reactivate, and attack Eva-02, and Shinji beats them off again, saving Asuka and NERV.

I know about what you put in the spoiler tag. But what I was stressing in my original post is that: I prefer the manga's depiction of the interaction between Shinji and Kaworu than the anime's (especially how Kaworu was introduced in the manga). Other things in the manga are hit-or-miss for me. Still, I'm not annoyed enough to hate the manga .

And yeah, I see your point. And I agree with you. Such intro is better, in that it creates static between Shinji and Kaworu (and references Mark Twain at the same time).
