You know, on the subject of Midori it might be a good idea to realize that the Japanese do have this concept of "Romantic Friendship" among close girl friends. (Ironically it's actually an import from America at the turn of the 19th century.)

Girls will have intense friendships that borrow the style of a romance. This is not the same thing as homosexuality. This is usually treated culturally as a phase for middle school girls, sometimes extending into highschool.

Nothing Midori has done really steps beyond those boundaries. Midori does seem to be showing a more intense level then normal, but there is no action that goes beyond a romantic friendship.

The main reason people are interpreting it as more is because some scenes during episode 2 implied that Midori sees it as illicit. Which a homosexual relationship would be in Japan. However, that's an interpretation and speculation. Midori's restraint in episode 2 could just be that she is shy, lacks confidence, and has difficulty handling intense emotions. (Much like Mochizou actually).

Her actions in the latest episode of reconciling to Mochizou's attempt to confess tends to support the shy and lacks confidence interpretation.

My best guess is that Midori is actually rather confused about her feelings. I doubt she would ever try to go beyond a romantic friendship unless Tamako encouraged her (which is about as likely as Dera ending up with Shiori). Eventually Midori will probably end up with a boyfriend and have a normal love life. That at least would likely fit with the Japanese perception of the situation. Even if the series was more romance focused, it would be very unlikely to seriously address an actual homosexual attraction.

You know, good job articulating this.

The relationship between Tamako and Midori strikes me as very confused. It's definitely more that just normal friendship, but her feelings don't quite strike me as romantic either. For one thing, she seems more concerned with clinging on to her current relationship with Tamako than anything more. She loves Tamako for sure, but I don't see how that jumps to lesbianism right there and then.

You were so right to put the emphasis on "should".

I want to remind everybody the summary of the series (posted on page 4) said both Mochizou and Midori are in love with Tamako. There is no ambiguity whatsoever here. Midori is a lesbian. Period. I don't know why that's so hard to accept. It's an uncommon situation in anime but that's what makes it so interesting.

Not necessarily. Midori might just be a Tamako-phile.

Well, if that's what the "official" summary says, then I won't argue. Still, it's not so much an issue of it being hard to accept as it is an alternate explanation for the same set of events. But really, let me just correct you: It's the existence alternate explanations that makes this so interesting.

Fair enough. Either way, her feelings for Tamako clearly go beyond friendship. The summary makes it clear her feelings for Tamako are no different from Mochizou's, and so far, the anime doesn't contradict that, quite the contrary.

I thought this episode made it obvious, but I suppose there is always room for different interpretations. I always found it fascinating how two people can interpret the exact same work radically differently.

Forgot to say I found it amusing Anko tans just as easily as Azusa. More proof these two are related. I wonder if that was intentional or if it's just a coincidence.

Believe me, I've been keeping an eye out since the episode, but so far the answer is no (i'm disappointed, Japan) unless you count this-

Although I am not sure who Tamako will end up with (I almost expect neither Midori or Mochizou and Tamako will continue loving both as friends oblivious to any romantic feelings)

But for my own choice, I am rooting for Mochizou. Sorry Midori, you are a nice girl I am sure.

But I like the idea of the kids of the two competing mochi stores getting together and joining forces in the mochi making splendor (plus they talk on paper phones, the most adorable thing ever).

I suppose I should be excited for 7, but I never liked the idea of a director directing other person's storyboards. And Hiroko Utsumi has a real talent for storyboards, a shame they didn't let her do her own thing.

Anyway, TakemotoxUeno is the best thing there, and another Kigami episode... pretty good overall.

Glad to know I'm not the only one hopping for that. You can put me down as a Midori x Mochizou shipper

I want to see some more too. After this episode, I'm actually hoping for my favourite crack pairing to win now.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

That's it? I have to second the disappointment. I guess the two best friends of the main character as a pairing isn't as popular in Japan as it is in the west (where its fairly common).

Tamako Market 05 - Tweet, Tweet

The gag of Dera being chased by animals actually changed my perspective of the show. It's not just something in the K-ON! vein (though it's clear it takes a few notes from there, too), but if one wished, this show could be interpreted as a sort of take on Ika Musume. The business is one of many and the invader is more benevolent and less human, but the feelings of family and community are the same for both. Not a whole lot for me to say this week, but I'm throwing my support to Midori. But even more support in general for Kanna, the most mathematical character of the season. The way she was looking at that fire suggests that her worldview may be the most observant out of anybody here. I like that Shiori has become a member of the main cast so quickly, and the girls' summer uniforms are pretty cute. Lots of pink going on there.
