I'm following advice to remove all codecs and then follow the Media Configuration Guide, but how can I be sure I remove them all? I'm a hideous n00b, if you can't tell.

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.

This will call up a list of all programs that can be removed. Look down the list and uninstall anything that contains the words: DivX, XviD, ffdshow, codec pack, Nimo, Matroska, Ogg Vorbis...

Note that these key words won't necessarily be the first. If you look carefully you should get them all.
