My problem with the first episode was that the pacing was all over the place (some moments were either too fast or too slow) and the abundance of forced plot exposition during the first 15 minutes

Damn, just like Symphogear...

Spoiler for Symphogear ep 1:

I do like that they're skipping the happy pink rainbow stuff that even Madoka played with for a couple episodes and making the whole story into J-horror.

If I understand the situation correctly, there are demons possessing people in the real world. The magical girls fight them by going into a reality marble and slaying the demon itself, but in doing so they not only kill the host, they erase her from history so that nobody even remembers she was there. So they're definitely trying to be more hardcore than Urobutcher, and so far it's working, but I wonder if they can keep it up for an entire cour. Seems like they laid a lot of cards on the table already, so they better have some good ones held in reserve for later revelations.

Keizo Kusakawa is directing this show. He made a great job with Nanoha so I hope for better.

I like the overall sad tone of the show, but those character designs are off putting. There are also funnier things to watch, than a show which tries to make a loli suffer. The action part at the end was watchable, otherwise boring start. Will continue for the first.

Boobie cousin better come back. That was a pretty shitty reason to be written out of the series.

edit: Think I saw her in one of the PVs. Doesn't seem to have been a scene from the first episode, so maybe there's hope.

At least Fuyuna wasn't intended to be one of the main characters compared to a certain dead character from Madoka Magica or Symphogear and it's been working for me so far.

I liked the first episode. Pacing was slightly off at times, but I was really feeling the whole atmosphere of the thing. I also like magical girl premises where instead of the main girl rallying everyone else up, the rest of her team is already settled in and the MC is the one either being recruited or needing to adjust to the new situation.

Like others, the kiddy style of the designs of the main characters was off-putting to me at first, and I voiced that back when I first even saw this thread. But it's a color palette I love looking at, and the animation/special effects are quite nice, so I can look past it.

Looking forward to seeing more.

The overall quality of this pilot stuck out to more more than anything. My honest comment is that this was one of the most artistically pleasing pilots I've seen in some time. The scenes were all very satisfying to watch, and they all looked very good. Granted, I don't expect quality like this throughout, but I think there's some great things to be expected here with all of these nice details.

Another thing that really struck me was the clothing. The designs for the outfits in this show are really very appealing. The main character in her other form is very nice as well, especially with the effects of her hair.

The story is rather interesting, if vague and a bit confusing. I can only assume we'll get explanations for the events of this first episode, and hopefully they do this right. At the moment though, I do feel positively about the presentation.

This was yet another "eh, why not?" show. I'm very pleased, and have a lot of positive things to say about it. TOO BAD IT HASN'T AIRED YET.

Edit: Dat opening. LiSA's work has been a bit hit and miss with me, but I did like this opening quite a bit. The ending they have is quite good as well. As if they didn't have good enough quality, they made the music good too.

Just watched the 1st episode, and this series might be even more than good.

Did anyone catch what Fuyuna's tarot card was? There was some sort of transparent butterfly on it, I think.

Pretty low budget show, the pacing was kinda whack. It was interesting, but it's just another show I'm dropping.

This was interesting. Not great, not horrible, but interesting. The artwork is really nice, although the designs take some getting used to. I wouldn't call it loli, but the proportions remind me of the character designs of some other series, like Oban Star Racers. It really shines in the action sequences than in the rest of the episode, however.

I felt the plot raced a bit to set everything up, and what is there very blunt and almost forced. The "shocking moment" is set up in an almost confusing manner, until you realize the disturbing part isn't the moment but what happens after it. It's an interesting twist on the Magical Girl "defeat the possessed person" trope.

The tarot card stuff I can take or leave. It's used mostly for thematic appeal, and admittedly tarot cards have a history of interesting artistic design, but the use of them doesn't really "flow" with the story just yet, so it comes off as forced. It's interesting that she clings to them as an heirloom while the flashback shows the mother taking them away from her. Clear foreshadowing, when combined with the ending dialogue.

I know a ton of comparisons will be made to Madoka, but so far this isn't really like it at all, except in some superficial ways. It's more like Black Rock Shooter, to me anyway.

I don't have any high hopes for this yet, but then again I didn't for Madoka either, at first. But it's a good start, at least.

Will we ever get to see a Post-Madoka Magical girl anime? Actually, I think it's a misleading question. However, it seems that two newer schools of Magical Girl animes are emerging in popularity the Post-madoka era. The first is the Vividred Style parody anime, the second is the Black Rock Shooter school which attempts to play mind games, and utilize the concept of alter-egos with their viewers.

I'm not sure whether Madoka Magica's features are sufficiently replicable. The so called Darker Post Madoka Magica works tend to go the alter-ego approach, rather than exposing the original personality of the Magical Girl to the full horrors of their system.

Spoiler for How do we define a Madoka Magica like show? Warning: Spoilers on Madoka Magica's system:

In-fact, this feels like Cardcaptor Sakura meets BRS, set in a more screwed up world. Of course, we still don't know how this magical girl system works. If there's a reveal that the system shares certain things in common with Madoka Magica's system, then I think the comparisons to Madoka Magica will come. Until then though, I think it's too early to say whether is or is not a Madoka Magica inspired anime.

The first episode of this was pretty good.

I think its somewhat inspired by Madoka Magica, but the similarities are minimal. Madoka and Akira are very similar female leads, that's the main similarity. Beyond that, the only similarity that stands out to me is how both shows take a particular magical girl element/trope and try to invert it/darken it.

Madoka Magica did this with the magical girl familiar.

This anime is doing this with the trope of how magical girls often have to defeat monsters arising from possessed humans, with the gateway into such possession often being "negative emotions" on the part of such humans (greed, envy, anger, etc...). Most PreCure episodes that I've seen have "monsters of the week" that arise in such a fashion. The main difference is that when a PreCure magical girl defeats said monster, the human is restored to normal, whereas here the human appears to get wiped out Shakugan no Shana-style.

As for going dark right away vs. going dark after a build up of two or three episodes - Personally, I think the latter is more effective. "Boobie cousin" (thanks, Sol ) was likable enough, but I had no chance to get attached to her whatsoever. So what happened to her is somewhat startling and disturbing, but less so than similar tragedies in Madoka Magica.

Still, this anime holds some promise, and I'm interested in seeing where it goes next.

FYI, if you don't regularly watch stuff like Precure it might not be a smart idea to talk about "the post-Madoka world".

it was tempting to call this a madoka clone, but the character designs reminded me more of that panty garterbelt series. I'll give it an episode or 2 just to see what will happen next.
