Anyone here feel that the BGM was consistently decent throughout the episode? Episode was still decent regardless i think since I had zero expectations for the MC, and he managed to impress me, and well, I find the other characters more potentially interesting than the main duo since in my eyes, they feel more like a comedy duet. OP and ED songs were nice.

That could be also attributable to the source material, and not Kyoani by default. It's their own editorial, of course, and they're not well known for being absolutely faithful to sources also, but actually they're not wizards to improve something that is not in "Kyoani MC standards" from the begining, in one single chapter.

Personally, I'm fine with what I saw of Mirai. Clumsy. Evident. Apparently dependent, but with margin to progress. Not a character you'll going to like immediatly at difference with Rikka, but in the same rail. Just need some development I guess.

The go-to studio for ecchi series (ItsuTen, Chu-Bra, I Don't Like You at All Big Brother, etc.).

Well, to be fair, Mirai did feel slightly "off" to me. Not enough to bother me, but I can see why it might bother some other viewers.

To me, she came across as a strange blend of Rika, Kanade (mainly just because of that first scene), and, oddly enough, Komari (Little Busters!). I actually didn't get the Izumiko comparison at first, but now that you mention it, I see some Izumiko in her as well.

So I get what you're saying. Mirai's not as clearly and well-defined as Yui, Rika, Kotomi, or Eru. Whatever one thinks of those four girls, they each have a very distinct personality, making it theirs regardless of similarities to other girls. Mirai is a bit more of a miss-mash that hasn't fully settled yet.

But then, it took a while for me to "get" Rika as well, so maybe Mirai will round into shape over time. It is only one episode after all.

I do think that KyoAni might have tried a bit too hard to have Mirai come off as funny in this first episode here, perhaps to compensate for her brutal violence which is unusual for a KyoAni girl.

Ah, gotcha. I know them mainly through My-HiME, Chrome Shelled Regios, and Rental Magica, which is probably on the milder end of ecchi for them.

Mai-Hime is actually a Sunrise production.

Wiki had it listed for ZEXCS. :shrugs shoulders:

Regarding Mirai was I the only one reminded of that girl with the vacuum cleaner power from Hunter x Hunter?

I have to credit Utsuro here... I had the impression that they were trying to make her an Izumiko type character, but I didn't think of Izumiko until RDG was mentioned specifically

Pretty much, though I hadn't come up with such a succinct explanation yet. And yeah, I don't find this normal for KyoAni.

I'm kind of hoping that we see more of her Izumiko like side soon since the final scenes seemed to be trending more serious. That would help define her some.

They may have contributed some in between work, kind of like Kyoani did for Turn a Gundam, but no one would say Turn a Gundam is a kyoani work . Look at the main wikipedia page for Mai-Hime at the right column, the accredited studio is listed as Sunrise. Or you could just look at ANN or MAL if you don't believe me.

I doubt we'll ever see that honestly. Izumiko was a far more layered character right from the beginning IMO. With Mirai they just seem to be playing up this cutesy, clumsy girl with a tragic past that we should feel sorry for.

EDIT: Got confused with character names.

Something is bothering me way too much about the chase scene. The shot where she cuts the dustpan, or whatever it was, in half there is nothing at all near her, then after the camera angle switch there's suddenly a pole-thingy she trips over? Seems kind of poorly thought out.

Well, Izumiko was the POV character, whereas this is being told from the guy's point of view, so there's still the possibility for development. But this being KyoAni, I expect it will involve making Mirai more tragic and moe rather than making her an actual complex character.

Do you think that a character can't be tragic, moe, and complex?

I can think of plenty of anime girls that are all three.

Perspective is weird in that shot. The pole is right next to whatshisname when he grabs the first thing he throws at her. Apparently we're supposed to believe that all of her movement in that scene leaves her stopped right where he started throwing things at her. He knocked over the pole as part of that process, she didn't see it when she stopped, and tripped over it as she started to chase him again.

Anyway, her being a dojikko doesn't bug me. I just feel like we haven't gotten to know any of the characters or the setting as well as I would have liked by the end of the first episode.

If that's the case then the perspective is just straight up wrong. He knocks over the pole right when the ground goes from bricks to dirt, she continues faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar beyond that.

EDIT: Ugh, crap like this bothers me to an almost unhealthy degree.

Didn't notice this... but I suppose this was pretty easy to miss... but yeah definitely an error there.

Hmm... Maybe he dragged it with him to lay down as a trap?

Overanalysis doesn't do anyone any good! Suspend your disbelief!

That part was awful. No, actually, Mirai herself is awful. She's one of the most artificially moe character I've ever seen. They tried way too hard to make her cute, to the point she pretty much became a caricature of a moe character.

This.

I'll just say I enjoyed the first episode, and considering this is only the second KyoAni show I've watched (The first being Free!, say what?!) I didn't come in with in particularly big expectations. I found Mirai to be a somewhat believable and relateable character in that she's a spirit world warrior, but doesn't quite know how to be one. She hasn't really figured herself out yet. I think that gives them a lot to work with as her character hopefully grows.
