This really has "light novel" written all over it, doesn't it? I was hoping Kyoani might be able to turn this into something more interesting than your average light novel, but I guess they're no miracle workers. The visuals and animation are the only things that stand out. The rest is your standard light novel fare, for better or worse.

It's my fault for getting hyped up in the first place. I'll lower my expectations of this series from now on.

What does that mean? I don't read manga and light novels so I'm genuinely curious lol.

It's possible Mom is being lampshaded as a kickass Spirit Warrior who arrives in the nick of time to save the day at some point. OK, she's a flake but that's not stopped other mothers from stepping in when their sons are in peril.

Spoiler for Mom:

I like Mirai, she reminds me of me -- telling Akihito to eat the free pickled ginger at the not-a-Yoshinoya gyuudon place instead of the pickled cabbage which costs (IIRC) an extra 105 yen. BTDT.

The writing is identical to the tons of light novels that use a similar setting. It's pretty blatant when you're used to them.

So if Mirai and Akihito were to have a baby then it would be an immortal half human half youmu blood manipulator.

That's not going to bite them in the ass once preorder figures comes in, right? It'll be a real shame if this does much worse than Free or even Tamako Market.

To be honest, I don't know what people expected, provided that it is based on a light novel. Unless the author is someone like Nisio Isin (and even he has his poor moments), you should generally expect the majority of current-day light novel adaptions to be mediocre at best in terms of plot.

Well, not that everyone should. But I do, at least

Really liking this one so far. KyoAni have yet to disappoint me. The only one of theirs I've ever dropped is Hyouka. I should probably give it another chance.

I do too usually, but I got swept up by the "OMG Kyoani is doing action again!!" hype. That and the fact one of their previous adaptations, Hyoka, reached a high level of excellence and didn't feel like a light novel (is it even a light novel? I'm seeing contradicting reports) made me feel pretty optimistic about this.

This isn’t just about the quality of the writing. Main problem is here, that most Light Novels are basically the same, just in a different wrapping. “I am just a normal highschooler, but I am not so normal as you might think and today I met this strange girl…… “. It almost becomes comical if you already know some of them.

As it was explained earlier in the episode, all the weaker Youmu in the area got buffed recently because of the influence of the incoming boss enemy. But since they get paid by the original unmodified danger level of the Youmu slain, it means they work harder for less pay. So they faced medium level threats but get paid low level loot.

Hyouka is a full novel. All 5 "Kotenbu" novels have been published as standard books prior to being reprinted in paperback or "bunko" form. All light novels are initially published as cheap "bunko" novels with illustrations placed throughout. The 5 Kotenbu novels do not have these illustrations. The contradicting reports are due to the first novel being published under the "Sneaker Bunko" label initially, but all were eventually published under the "Kadokawa Bunko" label.

On-topic, I'll say that this episode was better for me on first watch compared to episode 1; however, I'm more looking forward to the next two episodes, especially Takemoto's second one.

And signs of a harem begin

That being said I also enjoyed this episode more than the first, perhaps because we were introduced to more characters & there was a more serious tone here.

Although kind of funny that the girl was the one who established the relationship with the boy first (well in trying to practice on him) and then in this episode she wants to avoid him. A bit contradictory in how the characters were written from episode to episode.

Well I haven't completely made up my mind to follow this yet but there is nothing else I am watching on Wednesday.

Cheap. Also, I suspect that appraiser is one of those folks you have to haggle with, otherwise she'll totally take your money.

While I'm talking about suspicions, I still have some that that Youmu was sicced on Mirai by the Nase clan deliberately, either as a test, or as a deliberate attempt to kill her (or both). The quick flashes to Mitsuki and scarf-boy at the end of the previous episode, and their repeated insistence that Akihito is getting involved in things he shouldn't be sticking his nose into seems rather ominous.

I don't think she was expecting him to try to drag her into meeting more people and being more sociable. She's probably realizing that she's bit off more than she wanted to chew.

Just watched episode 2:

I agree with a lot of the complaints people are making about this show but I have to say that I think the visuals have really delivered on the hype. There are a lot of great looking shows this season, but this one still stands out to me and the fight scenes are really well done. I also loved scarf boy. This show insults your intelligence at times but it can also be really entertaining.

Episode 2 was much better than the first episode. At least Mirai wasn't as cutesy poo as she was first episode.

Poor Akihito...

So about one minute into the first episode it was pretty clear that Kyoukai no Kanata is my pick this season. Every other pilot was so dreadfully boring for me by comparison to this anime. I was beginning to fear that I wouldn't actually find a single anime that really made me want to stick through this season, too.

For those of the "this is just your typical boy meets supergirl" camp, it's not about the premise as much as it is what goes into the premise. Even though the premise is run-of-the-mill stuff, the content here is what's unique. Also, the way the animation is done in this now well-established style, but almost subtly, gives it a little flair that I like. It's not the most original thing in the world, but it's a very charming show.

Forgot to mention that one. The mom's voice annoyed the hell out of me.

Oh she's just being shy, being chased by an immortal kindhearted senpai and all, not to mention that's her first time ever.
