Donten ni Warau

Quote:
The story of Donten ni Warau takes place in the 11th year of the Meiji era. The number of people in Japan who feel dissatisfaction toward the government are increasing due to the increasing speed of Westernization and the ban on samurai. In order to curb the increased rate of crime, the government opens a new prison. The three brothers of the Kumo family are entrusted with the duty of transporting these criminals to the new prison, but adventures await them on the way.

I'm currently reading the manga and I'm enjoying it! The manga is already over so I hope whoever the staff is won't mess it up.

Literally it means "smiling/laughing at the cloudy sky", less literally it's kind of like "facing difficulties with a smile" or something along those lines.

Just finished watching ep1

It's odd and perculiar without being overly eccentric. I feel like something is missing, but there's no big sense of mystery either. Another show that I just do not understand this season. It didn't engage me front up though in any of the departments. Not exactly hyped at the moment, and fairly low on the priority list.

^From the manga reactions I've seen, it seems like a good series. I'm hoping it'll be something like Pandora Hearts, but we'll see. Will probably wait for a few eps to come out before watching, or just follow the manga.

FUNi is too lazy to even translate "eleventh year of the Meiji era" into 1878.

Judging by the first episode, the anime has the same kind of feel as the manga. It's nothing really special, but a nice and pleasant read, somewhat retro. If I had to compare it to something that had a similar feel and also got an anime it would be probably Hakkenden. (Except DEEN brought their A game to Hakkenden, while Dogakobo... well, at least so far they're doing a better job than with Makai ouji? )

Anyway, the first episode was nice and enjoyable, and a pleasant continuation of my Nakamura Yuuichi (and Kaji Yuuki. and Sakurai Takahiro, I suppose) year so far.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but if it's even half as good as Hakkenden was for me, I should enjoy this.

Ep 01

Hafta agree with others in their opinion that it was pleasant enough, but that it was definitely an intro ep setting the stage and introducing the characters and setting.

But in between the introductory material there were teeny glimpses of things bubbling in the background - some that left an impression (like the last scene with the prisoner and prison guard talking) and the hints dropped about the teacher being out of the ordinary in some way.

Will definitely check out a few more eps, in any event. Kinda curious....

Surprisingly good. I'm curious to see a bit of the brothers' pasts soon.

At first glance, interesting.
That is one weird family... LOL
Still, they look pretty fun though.
There's just something about it that makes me wanna watch it.
Gonna give it a few more episodes before I decide.

I was hoping they'd do a crossover with Kenshin. Both sides team up to take down some notorious serial killer.

That was...incredibly boring to be honest. The pretend mother and child gag was amusing but otherwise I found it hard to gain much of an interest. The art and animation was a little bland and none of the characters really appealed to me (especially Soramaru and his excessive angsting). I'll give it another episode but I'll probably drop this one.
