Who says it can't be both? It's been done before.

What I have not recalled is a genre blending combining battle, with comedic slice of life, with political intrigue, in Japanese anime. Western fantasies on the other hand tend to do well combining the first and third, but in doing so, often sacrificing humor.

Botan's Maou Criteria is surprisingly up-to-date. From recently aired animes, I learned that being evil is no longer part of the criteria anymore, all they need is ambition to earn the title. Guess modern day Maous have it easier than the past.

Much create to the writing staff. Rather than murder 1 of the top 10 (at least by several polls I've seen) greatest works in modern Japanese, they went for 5 to 6 of them. Plus a bunch of important historical stories. The Going Home Club knows no limits to being bakas!

Seriously, that was funny. And it's a good thing I'd read up on the plots of those books or about 2/3rds of this episode would have gone over my head.

I finally caught up. Obviously the latest episode in which Kitakubu pokes fun at literature studied in Japanese modern literature would be lost on most people outside of Japan. I also have to do a few look-ups myself; as a couple of them were obscure to me. Actually, a number of the works don't even originate from Japan (like "Run Melos", "Memories of Youth", "Sangetsuki"), so 'murder' won't be right with these ; they were either translated (Memories of Youth), or adapted literature (Run Melos by Osamu Dazai, which was actually the third retelling of a Greek tale, and Sangetsuki, which originated from another literature work from China) and made part of the curriculum in Modern Literature studies. The Tarous are pretty much elementary student-level knowledge and are more like folklore. But all the referenced works should indeed be famous with natives for sure.

Kokoro
Run Melos
Claire mixes up Melos with Giovanni in Night on the Galactic Railroad
Memories of Youth is better known as "Jugendgedenken" (funny there's no English wiki entry on it). The author is Hermann Hesse, and Jugendgedenken is actually missing from the list of works in his entry??
Sangetsuki (Moon over the Mountain) is about an official who quits his post to become a poet, fails and turns into a weretiger from frustration. Sakura's rendition is of course the best, though "The Monday Over the Miserable" doesn't make much sense; guess they were trying to fit "Moon over the Mountain" thing. It's more like "Even Monday comes for a Miserable person like me".
Kintarou, Momotarou, Urashima Tarou are pretty famous and have appeared as references in many shows, and should be easy to search anyway. Kintarou even made it into this show as the fire officer of Kitakubu

Star Wars Momotarou rendition, a New Peach (LOL), is the best

Lastly, Kachi Kachi Yama

I loved the "Fire Prevention" tag being "Corpse in the Middle of the Room". That was great.

This series is a bit strange, but it's quite funny.
