Eren was an interesting character there because he was such a sharp contrast to the way other series would have handled him. Another series, he wouldn't have been showing that kind of anger and hatred, the sort which makes people pause and think that something's wrong with him. He would just have saved Mikasa somehow and maybe tied the slavers up. But in Attack on Titan, he didn't have the ability to win that easily and trying to kill them was the only way to fight. And when he did it, he wasn't sanitised and made to look like a totally pure hero.

Despite the fact that bad or ugly things keep happening, I don't think that Attack on Titan is a downer series. Eren in the flashback was saying that you have to fight to win, even if the odds are low, and the characters are doing that. Attack on Titan is just not letting humans have victory easily. In another series, Eren and Armin's team would have all survived, rather than all of them but Armin getting chomped on in their very first real fight against the Titans. But that's a good thing in some ways, as the Titans are being set up as serious foes rather than pushovers. If they had been so easy to kill, would we have a decent series premise with sufficient conflict and uncertainty?

Very good points.

In other shows, we'd have Titans, Captain Titans, Awakened Titans, Vizored Titans and Abyssal Titans so that the protagonists still face foes that might be seen to be challenging.

nitpick: we do already have abnormal titans, giant titan and armoured titan. And it's still early. So it could still happen ..

I hope it will take a long time to overcome the current batch of Titans. That would be a lot more satisfying than some other series.

I guess you can say that. However I do agree that Eren is fairly abnormal, but standards for normalcy as other posters have stated in this thread are different from era to era as well as society to society. People easily tend forget that in RL not more than 300-400 years ago kids were considered adults by the age of 14-15 (rather than 21), often already working even as young as 10. They grew up fast in those times due how hard and tumultuous life was back then. SnK reflects that sort of period, so Eren establishing his own set morals and world views really isn't strange to me.

I am well aware of this. Back then the kids had nothing else to do except for working an ****ing so its only natural that they copied their parents everyday life that early. Farming and livestock breeding also required more manpower.

I still find it hard to believe that a 9yr old kid can have a such strong sense of justice and a harsh matured view of the world. Especially since it seems Eren was living a fairly normal life in a complete family (dad, mom).

You could say the same about poets publishing their works about complex issues as early as age 10/11. Again it depends on one's up bringing and the society. I assume Eren was probably installed with a strong sense moral of right early on. That's why he defends others like Armin and didn't dismiss his ideas even when popular opinion is against him (which is why he has next to no friends). Saving Mikasa is the same thing, it was logical right thing to do given the circumstances to him.

My 2 cents in anycase.

True, Eren was a boy with a strong murderous intent. When he lost his mother, he said he will kill every single titans and I came to know he's for real after watching this episode. He showed that with Mikasa incident. He kill every single one of the enemy if he means it. Now one thing that is common between him and Mikasa is that they both lost their mother in agony. Plus their mothers died right in front of them, watching them slaughter in a bloodbath and that's made them bitter and stronger than the others.

That was a beautiful episode. It really showcased the dynamic between Mikasa and Eren and helped grabbed a glimpse of how Mikasa feels which I feel is critical to getting to know a character. and hey I have to admit to finding Eren much more impressive and Mikasa to be even more impressive. Apparently she turns into Shiki Tohno or something. But how is all that realization going to play out here, in this world that doesn't forgive.

Really? I didn't see any sparks. She's probably a descendant of the T1000 and the Governator, then. Haha.

Well, in any case...

This is actually the first post that I've come to agree with completely in this thread. This episode was indeed about exploring Mikasa of her unrelenting devotion (??) toward Eren and how it came to be. This episode was not about Eren, but the kind of effect he had on Mikasa for her to be the way she is in the present. How Eren achieved it, or whether Eren's action stretched the imagination due to his age, or about his own psychological disposition were moot points. We are discussing about a world that has Giants in it after all. The general psyche of the population shouldn't be normal and it isn't. The episode wasn't about Eren at all, or about justifying him or the way he is (was?) in any way. The episode was all about Mikasa.

Very much looking forward to the next episode when Mikasa learns about Eren's demise.

Sorry if this revives the heated debate but I always felt that what made Eren stand out from the typical modern Shonen protagonist is simply the fact he actually kills people, with that flashback he might have a killcount higher than Luffy and Naruto combined, that doesn't make me think he's much cooler because of that but it does make him different to me.

In which case Armin just went (and still is) though this. Poor guy gonna needs years of therapy before he can begin to recover. There also mystery how he survived before Connie and co got to him. You think he'd be an easy meal in his state.

Hell, you'd think the Titan which just munched Eren would have Armin as dessert. But nope, he lived.

Luck of the draw.

So far I have found this series to be enjoyable but very silly.

I haven't read the manga or anything so everything I say is just on the speculative level, but I don't believe the mc to be dead: I bet next episode he is going to activate some kind of japan-powers and raise his powerlevel as bursting out of the belly of the titan shouting madly

Please don't give her any ideas. You don't want Mikasa to suck Eren dry

This episode was excellent I'm really glad they did Mikasa's backstory justice. It was definently interesting to see the events that made her into such a broken individual and what exactly made her so attached to Eren. I do agree that Eren killing those guys first was a bit over the top since we weren't given any indication that his life was particularly abnormal up till that point, but his actions were pretty in-character to me, and he does have a screw or two loose so it's not that surprising to me to see take that kind of response against human murderers.
