And don't forget that humans have extremely uneven distribution of tastes, complicating matters greately. (just try and measure anime popularity near Akihabara!).
The standard deviation of a proportion (p) is

sd(p) = sqrt[p(1-p)]

This quantity reaches its maximum value at p=0.5. That "rough error" estimate you described applies to the p=0.5 situation. That has no relevance to the situation where p=0.04. There sd(p) is much smaller; 0.0384 compared to sd=0.5 at p=0.5.

Intuitively it has to work this way. Sampling always generates a distribution of estimates, so as you get near the endpoints p=0 and p=1 the variance of that distribution must shrink.

As for tastes, I discussed that in the "more advanced" section. Regardless of how different tastes may be, if you sample people randomly you're guaranteed to get an unbiased estimator. No real-life survey is truly random, but well-designed, professional surveys do a pretty good job of creating a sampling "frame" that maintains equal probabilities of selection. Most household samples rely on something called "multi-stage" sampling where you randomly select among large geographic units (weighted in proportion to population) and work down to smaller and smaller units until you select the fourth house on the left-hand side of Adams Street. If the person living there doesn't want to cooperate, there's usually a protocol to randomly select a different dwelling unit in the same location. I know it's fashionable to dismiss all social surveys as "unrepresentative," but that ignores the decades of work that a lot of smart, dedicated people have invested in the measurement of public opinion.

I actually think household surveys, which includes metering like Nielsen and Video Research do, are much more reliable these days than telephone surveys. The continued proliferation of cell phones, answering machines, and the like has made telephone surveys progressively less representative. The population of people reachable by telephone surveying who actually choose to cooperate has plunged in the past couple of decades. With household surveys, a real person shows up on your doorstep and asks you to participate in the study. That's a lot harder to refuse. Plus a metered home is a long-term investment; Nielsen works hard to get their sampled households to participate because they'll be in the panel for at least a year.

2008-07-20, 13:51 Link #267 houkoholic seiyuu maniac     Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Tokyo, Japan Slayers' timeslot is not that late - it's pretty much standard time for anime now-a-days, plus you have other shows which airs later that has better ratings. The problem is really to do with that it's too old of a franchise to have a revival now - they should've either remade the original story or do a complete overhaul with a new cast - not trying to continue the old story, since most Japanese fans of Slayers back then probably grew out of anime altogether now, and continuing the show makes it rather unattractive to new viewers. Also while trying to keep true to its roots, the show turns out story and comedy that is dated by today's standards, its (back then) hectic comedy is slow, I couldn't even laugh at guy who said "oh shi they found out the weakness!" as Lina and gang ran off because it was so OLD. The show would've work maybe 5-8 years earlier, but not now as things had changed alot since then. I'm not surprised that it did so poorly personally, as even as a fan of Slayers as well as a huge Hayashibara Megumi fan back in the late 90s, I found the first episode to be very underwhelming to the point that I almost fell asleep and had to fight the urge to switch channels. __________________ My twitter - not really seiyuu-centred so follow at your own risk Celebrities I've talked to in person Mizuki Nana, Chiba Saeko, Shimizu Ai, Shimokawa Mikuni, Chihara Minori, Tamura Yukari, Nakahara Mai, Sakai Kanako

School summer vacation for many children and teenagers in Japan regularly starts on Marine Day (Umi no Hi), which falls on the Third Monday of July (July 21 this year), and last six weeks. FNS 27-Hour TV (FNS 27jikan Terebi), an annual summer television event in Japan, took place this year from Saturday, July 26, 2008, 7:00pm to Sunday, July 27, 2008, 9:54pm on Fuji TV. It preempted Sazae-san, Chibi Maruko-chan, One Piece, and Gegege no Kitarou in the Kantou region. Note: FNS stands for Fuji Network System. __________________ Last edited by Siegel Clyne; 2008-08-04 at 20:37.

It may have had a significant depressive effect on television audience ratings of programs airing opposite it, such as Sazae-san, Chibi Maruko-chan, Gegege no Kitarou, One Piece, Dinosaur King, Code Geass, and Yes! Pretty Cure 5 Go Go! A TV rating of 12.0% is the lowest I can recall for Sazae-san in the Kantou region. __________________

Do you think anime (or even cartoon as a whole) is decreasing globally nowadays? __________________ "Nous dirigeons vers un système planétaire inconnu..."

Do you have a source for this?

According to Video Research Ltd. via Moetry:

And for the No. 1 all-time record holder for a movie, which also happens to be the No. 1 all-time record holder for animation of any kind...
