Great episode. They adapted the Frenda battle from the manga perfectly. I look forward to the next couple of episode where Mikoto battles continue.

If Frenda was willing to sell them out it only means they're not mean to be protected but someone else.

That was one of the most entertaining episode in the series. Very sweet action. Frenda is a pretty fun character. She is like the (moe) Batman of Railgun. She almost beat a level 5 thanks to prep time and a marvelous bluff.

That was hilarious.

Mikoto levitated that staircase while she was standing on it. Does that mean she can float around if she stands on a metal disc ala Magneto from X-Men?

She can practically fly as long as there's metal close enough for her to latch onto with her powers. I imagine doing either of those probably uses more energy than just walking/running, however, so she doesn't bother unless she has some compelling reason.

She can but I don't think she ever does.

Glad to see you take the action this time, relentlessflame. I always dislike that joke.

(This is why I wrote that in the second post of this topic)

This episode really got me excited to see the Battle Royale arc animated in index III. They better do that fucking justice.

Hmm... I thought she had them all linked together, so that the staircase wasn't just floating.

I suspect lifting yourself (or something you are standing on) is a difficult skill to master, as opposed to lifting something else. After all, these abilities are based on a persons ability to perceive their own reality. I'd think that picking yourself up by lifting something you are standing on is a difficult reality to perceive since you'd have no leverage.

Lifting someone else on the other hand should be easier.

Damn, normally I hate this type of character (Frenda) but her voice is just so cute during those scenes that it quickly grows on me I'm glad that I didn't read ITEM fight in the manga before watching this episode, Frenda is actually pretty cool when she fights.

Guilty as charged

It's not that I disliked the episode (animation was great and the VAs did an awesome job...won't comment on faithfulness to the manga 'cause I've read it so long ago that I can barely remember details), but to me, "Misaka Mikoto" and "action scenes so awesome they keep you glued to your chair" don't go together.

It's a matter of personal preference though. J.C Staff did a great job adapting this episode, but when it comes to Railgun, I prefer the emotional episodes (such as the one where Misaka's clone was introduced) over the action ones.
'cause in the end, Misaka won't go all out on an opponent, and she's sure as hell not leaving a body count behind. She's still too good a person

Still, I feel that the adaptation as a whole is pretty good. Can't wait for the next episode seeing how she's exhausted AND outnumbered.

I thought the pacing for this episode was a little slow. Even so, it wasn't badly done at all. Really excited for the next episode.

Other than that, Frenda's awesome. Still, how does she manage to fit all those explosives under her skirt?

They really rolled out the big budget for this one. The animation quality was superb, in my opinion. Frenda is awesome.

Talking about animation, the difference between the perfectly fluid CG flames and the non fluid normal animation was quite visible...

I didn't really expect to like her character much, but Frenda was pretty entertaining . Had plenty of cute and put up a great fight there. Sometimes the only way to win is knowing when you can bluff and having backup plan after backup plan. Glad they spent a good deal of time on this fight since it was worth it.

Better than any ship with boys, yes.

Frenda: She strikes me as the type to be a straight up serial killer if she wasn't working w/ITEM. The anime version of the scene about 'controlling the fate of those she's about to kill' conveyed this even better than I remembered the manga version.

I wish Mikoto had been a little rougher with Frenda. Every move in that battle was filled with Frenda's killing intent (the opening move was collapsing the ceiling over her - and she had no idea she was dealing with a Level 5!) - there was no question as to Frenda's goal. Then again, Mikoto stepping back and admiring Frenda's silence is what allowed her to avoid the death ray...

Not quite. At least for now she doesn't seem to have the ability to levitate.

Those stair case pieces were magnetically linked to a stationary object. Like magnets on a fridge. That's pretty much what she did.

Ala, the non destroyed part near the top where Frenda is.

Theoretically she could levitate by repulsing her self by some form of interaction with Earth's magnetic field. But she would have to oscillate it in a complex way and it would require a very powerful magnetic field to do it. It would likely have to by far over power the Earth's magnetic field and it's area of reach would have to be the same or larger as well.

I also heard of possible theoretical flight engines using monopoles. Magnetic objects that don't have two poles. None of which have been found in nature and none have been generated artificially yet. It's possible she may have to figure out how to generate such a magnetic field with only one magnetic pole before she can freely levitate.

I think she's got quite a ways to go before she can do something like that.

At her current power level, the only way to levitate would be by inducing a magnetic field in a metal object near her and use herself or a second metal object to levitate above it via a second magnetic field. (Think of those little toy floating spinning top things that you can get to float off the base by spinning them. The base is a electromagnet and the top is a permanent magnet. Same physics involved, just this time both objects would be electromagnets)

At this point it's only a matter of her actually thinking up the process she needs to go through to make it happen. I'm sure she didn't learn her railgun overnight. The levitation via two metal objects is the most simplistic way to do it, but it's probably just as complex in terms of calculations like her railgun attack. Firing a projectile very fast seems simple, but the movements of the magnetic fields she has to perform to make it happen requires quite a bit of calculations to get it to work right.

So it won't be something she will pick up on instantly in the middle of a fight. Perhaps it will come up as a homework assignment for her at school at some point or she will suddenly have this idea and train her self to get it working.
