I'll definitely try to catch the one in Portland, like I did last year.

Did I mention that this one looks to be quite a mind screw?

If the movie goes for the ridiculously obvious "Homura is made to depend on others and learns the power of friendship" fucking bullshit I just might raise a gun to my head or bite a cyanide capsule -- or both!

After the excellent concept and execution of the series, I fear the movie has nowhere else to go but down. I hope I'm wrong, but as the 26th approaches the dread within me rises.

If you want the movie to be disappointing then it will be disappointing.

^ Never said I wanted a disappointing product, only that my expectations aren't high.

Yeah, because nothing says mature human being than an absolute refusal to get help from others even when facing dire circumstances. Am I right?

^ I'm just hoping the cliche is avoided, that's all. The movie's plot/message doesn't need to approach such a cliche if it doesn't want/need to.

Considering how successful the series has been at deconstructing and reconstructing Magical Girl tropes as it is, you can probably rest easy. If they do lean towards that sort of aesop, the presentation will be innovative enough.

Everything has been done; it's execution that matters. Either way, though, 'friendship' aside, Homura is clearly going to learn something as the main point of the movie. It's pretty unavoidable.

^ All good points, though cliches are harder to use effectively because they are very obvious and well-worn, even when compared to other tropes. If they do use the "you can't [do it]/[go on] alone, so accept the help of friends" cliche (some lines from the trailers seem to point in that direction, alas), the execution will have to be very innovative indeed for me to be able to swallow it.

Some ideas and messages are cliche because they're generally accurate and universally appreciable (i.e. friendship exists in almost every culture known to humanity).

It is possible to get too caught up in the meta-realm, and not focus enough on what makes sense within the story itself.

If it makes sense for Homura to start relying more on the other Puella Magi in order to solve a difficult problem then that's what really matters, imo.

All of that being said, what about Mami and Sayaka getting into major fights with Homura makes you think this movie is all about friendship?

Even if Homura starts working with the other Puella Magi to solve major problems, it'll probably be more about "putting aside differences to accomplish common goals" then a sort of PreCure-esque "friendship conquers all!" The only Puella Magi that Homura ever developed a real friendship with was Madoka. Homura may have respected Kyouko and Mami, but she never struck me as being that close to them. And Homura and Sayaka are typically at odds, of course.

So... you're saying she's taking the Batman route? Doesn't play well with others, but will still play with them when necessary?

It's gonna premiere real close to here, for that I am excited. Problem is, it's about a 5 hour drive away down what's considered the most dangerous highway smack dab at the beginning of December. Kinda wishing this premiered just a bit earlier, now I have to do some serious debating. >.<

Well, there's no living person that means as much to Batman as Madoka means to Homura. But other than that, yeah, I expect Homura to be like Batman.

I don't expect Homura to go all buddy-buddy with people she'll be spending a good portion of the movie in serious combat with. If that happens, it'll probably seem like BS to me too. But I do think she (and Mami/Sayaka) might have to put differences aside to accomplish common goals.
