What differs cartoons from anime?

What is the difference between cartoons and anime, and which is better? Why? My answer is Anime.. There difference is that the characters in anime are much better drawn in terms of the quality, and I've always believe that Anime are for the teenagers to adult, whereas cartoons are for children.

Anime is a type of cartoon that is distinguished by having a primarily Japanese production/creative team or being primarily made in Japan.

That is it. It's nothing to do with quality, and there are great cartoons made outside of Japan as well as many terrible anime.

Try using the forum search procedure next time before flaunting your newness to everyone.

An anime is an animation product with its origin in Japan.

A cartoon is an animation product with it's origin anywhere, but Japan. (most of the time from a western country)

EDIT: What @Tempester said.

I know that SummeryDreams is a newcomer to this board, so I have no beef with the OP himself.

However, this topic has been done to death on this board, and I don't think many people are going to be changing their minds anytime soon.

Personally, I like to equate "anime" with Japanese-made animation, and "cartoon" as animation aimed at kids. It's not perfect - There will be examples that really frays around the edges here - But it'll work for the vast majority of animated works.

That being said, I don't think this topic is anywhere near as important as it's made out to be. Classification has some value, to be sure, but there's an old saying that applies here - "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
