The Forever War to be adapted on cinema by Ridley Scott!

While browsing the newspaper recently I learned that one of my favorite science-fiction novel: The Forever War by Joe Haldeman; is gonna be adapted on cinema by no other than Ridley Scott who is back into science fiction after Alien and Blade Runner!

I first came across this great work of science-fiction with the comic adaptation, which was beautiful and made me read the novel, wich was a particularly vibrant story about war from the soldiers perspective, mixed with an interesting way of portraying interstellar war.
It's been a while since I last read the novel, but it is still fresh on my mind. And I think it will make great movie material.

I read this for an Intro to Sci Fi class in college...

To be honest, I'm a bit surprised at this, because it didn't seem like your average "sci-fi action epic explosions" type story. I'm glad that there are still more reflective SF stories being brought to the big screen.

I wonder if they're going to adapt Forever Peace as well? They're might have been a third book, not sure...

This is fairly exciting new, especially for Ridley Scott fans (which I am). Forever War opens up a lot of great topics about America's current placement in world affairs (the original novel was anti-Vietnam), and if the movie can be made before America withdraws from Iraq (if America withdraws ), there can be a great deal of symbolic connections between the film and real life.

Apparently Ridley Scott has been waiting for 25 years to adapt Forever War into a movie, according to an interview. Given how much enthusiasm he is showing so far, odds of getting an excellent adaptation are good.

IIRC the sequel was Forever Free (I recall reading it, both novel and comic, but it wasn't as interesting), trusting wikipedia, there is a third book: the novella A Separate War, which presents Marygay's side of the story the last part of The Forever War
.
I haven't read Forever Peace, altough I have heard of it and it looks interesting.

Interesting... this has always been one of my Top 10 science-fiction reads to recommend to anyone. I have some confidence in Scott to adapt it if he gets the finances.

A little old update, the movie is shot in 3D (notice that this was announced as Avatar wasn't released yet).

Promising, promising

that was a depressing read

Tempering our excitement somewhat was the news that Warners plans to produce a single movie from the plots of these first two novels in the series.

The Forever War is a great book. i'm hoping it'll be good. it'll probably be a cult hit like Starship Troopers.
