Tales of Zestiria trademarked in Europe

Quote:
Namco Bandai recently trademarked a large number of Tales-related names in Japan. Among them, Tales of Zestoria, Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Zestias, and the recently announced Tales of Link. But only one of these trademarks was filed in Europe: Tales of Zestiria.

Honestly Tales isn't a big RPG title series in terms of sales beyond Japan. Makes me wonder with the time, money and effort their spending on these trademarks how exactly this is all supposed to pay off in the future.

They'll need to have a Persona 3 like redesign for the series to succeed IMHO.

You know that they are just trademarking those names to throw off the scent of which would be the actual title right? Not all of them would be used.

And they have been doing this for years.

Also, despite it's strong fanbase, the Persona series is still a niche title.

I don't know to what capacity Persona 3 redesigned things, but if they change too much about Tales I'd drop it. I love it the way it is, as do most people. That's... kind of why it's so popular. It might not be pulling 600k like Japan, but it still does better than pretty much every other non-FF JRPG.

This.

And technically, the Tales franchise has already made enough significant game mechanic changes throughout its history that the Persona franchise would look stagnant in comparison.

I remember there being no Free Run or dashing mechanic in Symphonia, and a "team" attack amounted to pressing Z and mashing skills. Now all characters can run and dash in any direction, and combination artes can finally be performed at will. Hell, not all characters even had Mystic Artes usable at will back then.

What Tales does need to retain, IMO, is a few of the unique core aspects of its storytelling--especially the nature of its villains. In Tales games, the villain is never unambiguously evil in his motivations, but instead always believes in his heart that what he is doing really is for "the greater good", and any harm he is causing is merely collateral damage (though sometimes this is a matter of situational ethics, such as when Creed Graphite in Takes of Hearts thinks that he should sacrifice Celland in order to resurrect Quartzia). This "no villain is evil in his own mind" aspect is something that I think is integral to the Tales series--none of the villains are your stereotypical Evil Overlord looking to conquer, pillage, destroy, or kill solely for its own sake or for their own greed and glorification.

I don't know about the earlier games, but from my experience in the last three games everybody wants to save the World- The difference is that the Antagonists have a more negative outlook on life, and may or may not consider humanity as part of that 'World'.

I don't recall any main Tales villain being blatantly evil.

I don't think Lambda from Graces had very good intentions. Didn't humanity just piss him off and thus he just wanted to destroy everything using Richard as an avatar of sorts?

Unless you consider the Fodra Queen the main antagonist of Graces instead, which in her case she's probably even worse.

you're argument is invalid on the fodra queen, she believed she was doing it for the greater good of the planet itself

Ehhhh, I think it's debatable when what you're trying to save is an inanimate object.

As I've said- The difference is that the Antagonists have a more negative outlook on life, and may or may not consider humanity as part of the 'World' that needs saving. They're more concern with natural balance and all that rather than human lives.

Or in the case of Gaius, an us vs them mentality.

not really you consider when the fodra queen is a part of the planets core making the planet a living thing, and she was bringing life back to the planet while killing the thing that she believed killed all life on her planet in the first place leaving it a barren wasteland

Mmm. Well I tend to look at Lambda more as the antagonist of that game anyway since the Fodra Queen was never in the Wii original.

Tales could probably do with a main antagonist that's just a complete monster for once. They tend to be much more satisfactory to eventually defeat.

Tales needs a Kefka.~

Gaius is more of "My ideals vs. your ideals"

It was like that from the first games--Tales of Phantasia's Dhaos was fighting the world's nations in order to prevent further development of large-scale mana-fueled weapons (such as the Mana Cannon) that would drain the life from Yggdrasl, the Mana Tree--both because he needed a seed from that tree to plant a tree for his own world, and because he understood that killing the tree would bring eventual ruin to the world of Aselia.

Barbatos want to destroy the world though IIRC, no noble goal such as saving the world It's Wakamoto's character after all
