The first time that I saw this series title was on this forum. After encountering an intriguing screenshot (sword battle silhouettes) I examined the series and read about some of the controversy. Someone had linked to this image that attempts to explain and defend the series by pointing to a deeper, underlying interpretation of the visuals:

Spoiler for Large image containing text:

Controversial series that depend on underlying, less obvious themes and messages appeal to me, so I started watching. The explanation seemed perfectly plausible for the first episode. The second started stretching it. I think that it was around episode 3 or 4 that I began to question the interpretation entirely.

It's not that the interpretation is outright wrong, it's just... I think that everyone can find some deep meaning in just about anything, if they try hard enough. The bigger question is whether the discovered meaning was intentional and meant to be discovered, or if the viewer came up with it completely on their own. I don't follow "behind the scenes" news and thus don't know if the series' creators have said anything about symbolism or hidden themes. As it stands, I'm wondering if a set of fans are trying to find some deep meaning in a series that is truly as superficial as it seems: a mindless series about sex, violence, and a loose-and-overdone back story that provides an excuse to keep the sex and violence going each week.

I continue to watch the series in part because I find this so intriguing. The episodes are interesting enough, but I probably would have dropped the show otherwise. Will we get to the end and discover that the series is actually deep and meaningful, or will it end and reveal itself to be as superficial as the criticisms claim?

Looking back at episode 3 I can feel the Dante vs Virgil vibe going on.
