Disappointment. Honestly, I think the overall story would have been better without this sequel.

When it comes to time travel stories, a major mystery and plot point is the mechanics of the time travel. Basically, the writer needs to hold a consistent vision of how his/her world operates. Then, as the time travelers progress in their adventure, these workings are gradually unveiled until the adventure comes to an end and everything is made sense of.

While Steins;gate is not my favourite time travel story, I think it did a pretty good job of wrapping things up in the ending. Some things were left ambiguous, but it was quite elegant overall. But what this sequel did was unncessarily re-convolute the plot, then attempt to close it again without quite reaching the elegance of the previous ending.

That's the main reason for my disappointment - I could criticise the other aspects of the movie, but if it was not for this thing, I would've just accepted it as a nice bit of fanservice and been happy.

My memories () of how S;G's time travel works are a bit fuzzy, so I don't completely understand what Kurisu did.

During that train station scene, we see two versions of Kurisu. I'm guessing that the one with her younger self is the version that happened in every other world line, while the one where she kissed Okabe only happens in Steins Gate. If so:
1. How does Okabe know about what happened in the past in Steins Gate when he only jumped to this timeline 1 year ago? Did he inherit every piece of memory from the previous Steins Gate's Okabe?
2. Why does Okabe not remember anything about this until after Kurisu explicitly goes back? Was the event retroactively applied to Okabe's memory? Or would that mean this is actually a different Steins Gate line instead?

basically is this. what decide you where you belong in world line is memory. Okabe have stronger memory on other world line then Stein;gate in which force him to go "back" to correct one

in order to solve this is by implement strong memory that is exclusive to Stein;gate. which is first kiss and kyouma story. that way okabe will feel that he belong to this world line

That was very good. I've forgotten some of the time travel mechanics of Steins;gate so I'm not sure the plot completely made sense but this isn't what I care about anyway. What I wanted first and foremost was to see all of this lovely cast reunited, and I wasn't disappointed. Kurisu was cuter and more awesome than ever in this movie. Props to Asami Imai, her performance was stunning.

8/10. Minus one point because this movie was unnecessary. The original ending was perfectly fine on its own. It's still cool fanservice.

It was nice to see this world line animated, even if only for a split second. Anime only watchers are going to be confused as hell though.

The more confusing part was them at the beach or whatever.

Welp. Watched it, but strangely didn't felt as gratifying as I expected it would be. Probably due to the pacing. OP and ED also didn't leave as much impression (but probably because Hacking to The Gate was just too good). The Kurisu services are all golden though, very nice .

Wondering if this story line can get expanded a bit more like they did in Eigou Kaiki no Pandora.

They can easily keep going if they want. However, it'd probably be best to stick to OVAs and drama CDs, since a movie would kind of need actual drama instead of just slice of life hijinks.

Wow, that was a nice movie. I've been waiting on it for a long time for it and it sure didn't disappoint. Okabe and Kurisu are really great characters and also a great couple. While the series focused on Okabe, the movie focused mostly on Kurisu. Learning about what Okabe went through, basically alone, to reach this world line and what he still has to struggle with mentally seems to have made their bond even stronger.

Basically this. I guess they've used the kissing scene between Okabe and Kurisu in the VN/anime as a basis for this solution. Kurisu kissed him back then and used the excuse that experiences like first kisses are harder to forget (because of some scientific reason). I guess that Kurisu kind of used the same method here. She was hoping that giving him his first kiss in the Steins;Gate world line would leave a huge impression on him. Well, the kiss and the Kyouma story.

I was thinking about this too, but Okabe never gave a sign of recognizing Kurisu during the VN/anime. And Kurisu didn't change that much.

The scene could have a symbolic meaning as well, since Kurisu was just thinking about how she wanted someone to call out to her, someone to tell her "I'm here watching", when she was little. When hearing about the young Okabe's worries, those feelings of her gave Kurisu the idea to tell the young Okabe about Kyouma in order to give him the courage to call out to Mayuri, to basically tell her "I'm here watching."

In the end this and the kiss seem to have done the trick.

Just finished the movie. Enjoyable overall, even if a bit unnecessary since I rather liked how they finished it up with the OVA. But I won't complain since I do love seeing the cast in all their glory with the shenanigans they do.

I admit I was caught off guard when this showed up in the movie. Didn't think they'd animate this tid bit as a world line flashback that wasn't shown in the tv series...

^I honestly didn't mind those short scenes in the movie, as an anime-watcher only, it still made sense. At least I get the point, not necessarily all the little details leading up to that scene, etc.
