Aria's done, there's really nothing else to tell unless it's a bunch of OVA side stories. Mushishi's probably the closest tv series to Aria I've ever witnessed (excluding the YKK manga), so I'll make do with this.

Very delighted to know about this. Indeed is one of the best news (regarding Anime) I heard recently.

Can't wait to the time when it airs.

So will this mark the return of discussions of just how smooth Ginko is, and how easily he charms the ladies he encounters without effort?

Same.

I'm always hearing good things about the first season, but I always forgot to check it out. Time to rectify that with this announcement!

Awesome news! I really enjoyed the first season, so I can't wait until it starts airing. Without a doubt, a must watch.

One of the things I especially like about the series is the odd watercolor'ish style of animation with its subdued tones. Another poster used words like "cool" or "austere" to describe the series, and certainly the..."temperature" of the world the series creates as well as the "minimalist aesthetic" that is always a delight for lovers of that art style to stumble across is well described with those words.

In some ways I am not bothered by the gap of time in between s1 and s2 because for me Mushishi is like a rare and exquisite desert that is made all the more effective because of the fact that it is not meant to be part of the daily staples we consume, but a rare, exotic treat, relished and valued all the more because of its exoticness.

It would be hard for me to name another series that so effectively conveys the invisible world as "other", as something so clearly "not human" as this one. There is no relationship or friendliness here, like in Gingitsune or every once in a while in Yuujinchou, but then there is no outright antagonism or ill will either. The world is just "other", a strange and dangerous place with its own laws that is to be feared and respected, yes, but which also (in an oddly curious and sometimes dangerously fascinating way) has it's "place" in the overall... umm... panorama(?) of things, despite it's alien nature.

Anyway, looking forward to s2 as well. ^^

I think there is a lot of humanity in Mushishi but Ginko is somewhat outside it. While he has friends who wait for him: Tanyuu and Adashino he can't settle anywhere. Ginko is a constant traveler and has no real home.

Hence most of the connections we see in the story are not between Ginko and someone else but between other characters. Ginko helps humans form connections with each other and the Mushi but then he moves on and doesn't form his own connections.

I feel thematically Mushishi is actually the closest to series with other travelers like Kino's Journey and Mononoke.

Aaaaahhh, I haven't been this excited for anime in ages!!!

Nagahama is directing, I hope? One interesting facet of the first season I loved was how subdued and real the voice acting was. Didn't even sound like anime at all, frankly, which was a plus for me. Hope to hear something similar as that again in this one.

Yes, Nagahama is directing; almost all the core staff from the first season is returning. You can hear the subdued, naturalistic voice acting in the recent Mushishi TV special (or in Nagahama's other show Flowers of Evil, for that matter).

Wonderful news, Mushishi and Kino no Tabi both have a very unique feel to it's narrative and story. I'm surprised this got a 2nd season considering it doesn't seem like a show that can sell anything other the novel itself.

Every time I finish an episode of Mushishi it feels like coming out of a really good movie. The recent special was no exception.

Can't wait for more of Ginko's adventures. Early contender for AOTS right here.

Well, I started calling shows like Mononoke and Mushishi "senmon" or "specialist" shows, because there's always one dude who knows everything and knows how to solve (nearly) everything on the topic of one obscure subject. If I were to write a story it would be in this vein because it's easy to write and I could focus heavily on the main character. Anyway, it's become my favorite genre.

Hopefully it really will be your typical TV anime season ... Then again I don't mind the specials format.

I'm really overjoyed with the news that Mushishi is coming back with a new season.
It's one of my top 10 fav animes/mangas of all time.

I watched the special early too, it was beautiful. Made me a died hard fan all over again.

Tho it does raise the question, would the new season follow the manga or perhaps diverse into an original route.
And there is the third possibility of adding more to the original manga story with a conclusion/after story.

I always felt the manga never really did have proper ending, much was left open and
a unfinished story and ALOT remaining questions about characters and plot

Any information yet on how many episodes there will be? I'm really hoping for another 20+ episodes season — given that they have sufficient material for it, of course. (I haven't read the manga, so I don't know if there is anything left to work with there, and if so, how much.)
