When i saw comments that it is another anime about card games i've lost my interest inmediately, however i decided to give it a try since i had some free time and i'm glad i watched this anime, it's kinda mysterious and it leads the viewer to think something bad is going to happen, also i admit the image quality is higher than expected.

I'd like to know more about this kind of cards, eventually we'll have more details about that, and i hope it won't turn out to be something boring more episodes ahead, or stupid.

to me it's a fine first episode. About this incest relationship thing, we should know more about japanese culture (history) and not stating things because in our own culture is in this way. Love is a crazy thing, anyway.

Bye~

I'm gonna agree with Kaoru Chujo here, I thought that was a GREAT first episode. Yes, as some of you have said, the premise is still a bit vague, but I personally don't think that's a bad thing. Too little information in the first episode is much, much, better than too much.

I think the potential with this show is unlimited. I never expect anything to be great, but if this is done well it could be the next great grim/dark series.

Speaking of which, is anyone else tired of every grim/dark show with moe characters getting branded as a "Madoka clone". I swear that almost every anime blog that previewed this show made some comparison to Madoka. Madoka was far from the first grim/dark show with cute characters (Narutaru?) and it wasn't the last either.

This show has nothing but superficial similarities to Madoka. It's grim/dark with moe characters and it's clear that the similarities end there. Mari Okada is nothing like Gurobuchi, and while you could probably make some more interesting comparisons between Shinbo and Takuya Satou they're also quite different IMHO.

9/10 for the first episode

Wow! This show had completely escaped my notice until I saw someone mention it in conjunction with the words "grim," "dark," and "potentially tragic." I'm an absolute sucker for those words.

I thought this was a great first episode. I was absurdly charmed by little Tama and her bloodthirsty battle cry <3 I also thought the sinister undertones were very well played. They were too over-the-top, in my opinion.

I think this show has serious potential. I can't wait for next week's episode!

Heh, even after one episode I feel confident in saying that bad things will happen to the characters in this show. I think it's less a question of if and more a question of when.

So far it doesn't seem that bad. I mean obviously the character card being gone is a negative, especially if say the card character just plain dies. But so far no mention of any negative effect on the person.

I suppose right now the only problem is what if a complete lunatic wins? Winning might be necessary not just for a personal wish, but also to avoid the wrong kind of person coming out on top.

Will say that's certainly one way to use a super wish that can make anything happen . I suppose if you care to go for the twincest route then you would need that kind of super wish to make it work out.

Suppose the most unsettling thing so far is Ru's card. Certainly feels like the battle maniac type. Nothing like having an ally that scares you more than the opponent does...

I didn't watch Fantasista Doll, but I can feel Madoka Magica vibes there from the first episode alone.

I don't see much Madoka in this apart from the surrealistic opening. The card battle reminded me of [C] - Control for some reason, and the characters feel like Okada wants to have another go at Black Rock Shooter.

But despite all that, the first episode was pretty good. I can see the potential for a train wreck, but right now all wheels are on the tracks.

I'm getting an Accel World, Fate/Zero, [C] Control and Yu-gi-oh vibe from this.
That's not necessarily a bad thing, besides it's only the first episode and Wixoss could go in any direction after this premiere. In any case, I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

I have a feeling that losing the card game is going to be a bigger deal than it's been made out to be so far. I predict that, at the very least, losing your card will = damage to your mental health.

Yeah, I feel like the people who are saying this show is like Madoka are just basically going:

1. Cute Girls - check
2. Grim Vibes - check

And then immediately concluding it's a Madoka clone

Other than those superficial similarities it's really not that similar to Madoka at all. I blame the anime blogs and tumblr accounts that have been saying this over and over again.

It's not so much the setup or the characters that give me a Madoka vibe, but rather the directional style. The camera angles and quick cuts to various backgrounds are highly reminiscent of what Shaft did for Madoka. This is especially apparent because it's not a style that JC staff normally uses for their shows. The show is also paced slower like Madoka.

Then there's the pastel like colors, and the way the lighting is set up for normal/dream-scape shots, the use of various filters. All of it combined just feels similar to Madoka. Whereas if you look at Genei wo kakeru taiyou, even though it has the same kind of light/dark split between the real world and the battle world, the resemblance isn't really strong at all. Finally, the music and sound effects give me the same feel I did while watching Madoka.

When you combine all of these elements, as well as the basic setup, it heavily gives off the Madoka vibe, which is a bit unfortunate as I think people will compare it with Madoka with a bias against the show. The first episode was interesting enough, but I think the show probably would have benefited more by distancing itself from Madoka.

All seriousness aside, Tama is totally the Kyubei of this show.

First episode was not much noteworthy imho. Interesting aesthetic but they didn't explain much about the card game, and as for the rest... pretty much by the books for this kind of series. I can see why people say they are reminded of Madoka, in the sense that this seems to be aiming at bringing the dark in a series about card games - there are five girls, there are wishes to be had, and ominous foreshadowing. But yeah, the set up is much more reminiscent of Accel World with a supernatural element.

About the darkness... I'd say that the most logic conclusion would be that this is an highlander-kind battle: the last Selector in game gets to become the Eternal Girl. Hence, is it unthinkable that someone who has the most powerful deck could have to stay on the lookout for other Selectors trying to destroy her cards, or simply kill her, if they can't win in a fair battle? Another thing: that "battles interrupted by an external influence have no value" is a pretty softcore rule. And it would allow for stuff like building a one-turn KO deck and then leaving a buddy outside with the instructions to stop the battle after one or two minutes - if you managed to pull off your combo you win, otherwise the other probably didn't have time to do anything and at least you don't lose. That's my gamer side speaking, but I'd like if the writers here thought this through.

About the incest thing... I'm pretty sure incest is considered as unacceptable in Japan as it is in the west, though it's also a common otaku fetish (but remember, otaku is a VERY negative term in Japan). I'm cutting this some slack for now because it doesn't seem like it's focused on the boy's fantasy side like it usually is in harems and the likes, so it could be used to define the girl's character and maybe without even shunning from the negative implications. But still it seems a pretty cheap device. For a while there though I thought there could be more to this - she said that some wishes can't be fulfilled no matter how you try. I wondered whether she meant enticing her brother (and doing so through magical means would be creeeepy) or just having him next to her for her whole life - meaning that for example maybe the brother also has some illness that will kill him young or something and she wants to save his life. Oh, well, at least they're twins, so she's not technically his "imouto".

This first episode is really uninspired. The visual lacking style, and the writing focuses more on putting in grimdark tropes than building the characters. Other than Tama being an obvious demon clone nothing is really memorable here.

For your information, I haven't read any blogs or anything on this show. Madoka Magica was my immediate impression when I watched the trailer and it was further strengthened when I watched the première. And I think it's disingenuous to say the similarities are only superficial. How many shows have you seen start off with young moe girls being attracted to a magical side that turns out to be incredibly dark and suffering? It doesn't help that the whole "cute girls suffering" appears to be a major point in this show, just as it was the whole point in Madoka Magica.

WIXOSS may not be a direct clone but it seems clear to me that the producers behind the show want to ride that fad. And really this shouldn't be all that surprisingly: We've already had Daybreak Illusion and Symphogear riding off the same fad as well. Neither of those are outright clones but you can tell what their marketing strategy was. And this sort of thing happens within studios as ell, as they attempt to use a similar formula for shows that have been successful for them (Hanasaku iroha > Tari Tari ; Kara no Kyoukai > Fate Zero > New Fate Series ; Mobile Suit Gundam > Every other mecha show since.) And yes, whilst there have been grimdark magical girl shows in the past, Madoka Magica is definitely the one that has made it popular in recent years.

This doesn't necessarily make WIXOSS bad (Episode 1 was fine) but the Madoka Magica vibes are more than superficial.

I have a bad feeling that 'Grandma' will die. Ruko need some motivation to win right?

I also hope I will be wrong.
