Mangas Where Things Turn Ugly

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for mangas that are rather dark and grim. Although not a necessity, it'd be a plus if it would start quite innocent (thus misleading the reader) before turning up the amount of more mature/violent themes. I don't mind if the ending is happy or not, but I'd like the manga to not be pure shounen (since those have "darker" moments too).

Examples:

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni / Umineko No Naku Koro Ni (well yea, most know these I guess, still waiting for scanlators/translators to end Umineko but those two are probably my favourites)
Narutaru (just found this one two days ago and finished it in a day, great read albeit a bit confusing, turned out awesome when the action kicked in, what a misleading first chapter T_T)
Another (good one, not as gory as the other ones but had a really interesting plot; one of the (imo) rare occasions where the manga was less graphic than the anime probably)
Devilman(damn, this one was really depressing, I had to get used to to the art though but it's pretty cool especially when considering how old it is)

I am also going to start reading Bokurano today. Hope it delivers.

I kind of prefer those mangas that have a more psychological edge to it instead of being pure massacres, though.

Thanks in advance.

Anime or manga. Either version of the three above is good.

Akumetsu
Berserk
Claymore
Jackals (manhwa but still pretty good)
Jiraishin
Necromancer (short)
Toriko
Rosario+Vampire
Record of a fallen vampire

Pretty much all that comes to mind atm, bolded titles involve a fair share of tragedy.

Tower of God might be what you're looking for. Even if it doesn't turn out to be 100% what you want right away, give it a try anyway; it's very good. There's a fair amount of darkness and betrayal towards the latter half of the first "season"(about chapter ~50 onwards)

Psychologically speaking? Qualia the Purple is one of the best psychological sci-fi manga I've read in a while as of recent.

Pokemon.

Just kidding. Things are always ugly.

Battle Royale gets into the action pretty quickly. Although there never was really a cheery beginning to begin with. However, if you're looking for actually good psychology that can make you think, cry, and sweat, I find it nearly unparalleled.

Dark, grim, and mature? Relatively innocent start? Psychological focus? Try A Lollypop or A Bullet. Despite being about a quirky girl in middle school, it gets very emotionally rough and depressing. It shares the same original author as Gosick if that means anything.

I second that, that's the one manga that when reading it, made me feel like I was as hopeless as the protagonist.

Maybe actually Shingeki no Kyojin fits your criteria.

You should really avoid the anime here. The manga is good though.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Railgun S (Sisters Arc ONLY) fits your criteria as well.

Uh... I really liked this manga, and it starts pretty childish but it then gets into heavy mental themes like anorexia and heavy depression, family problems (to an extreme), a guy even gets stabbed.

Kodomo no Omocha

Wolfsmund.
The Time is 13th Century, Switzerland under the rule of The House of Habsburg.
Every chapter always started as a story between Two Individuals - A Girl and His Guardian Knight, A Leader and his trusted Confidant, Father and Son, Wife and Husband, Mother and Daughter, Brother and Sister... Relationships you'll root for...

But basically, don't get too attached to the characters...

Let see, there is one I found recently:

Ana Satsujin, however, that really is more dark from the beginning. Basic concept: Etsuro Kurosu is a high school graduate who failed to get into university and has since become a hikkikomori. He attempts suicide by hanging himself from belt attached to a hook on the wall of his apartment, but fails when the hook breaks off the wall, creating a small hole into the apartment of a beautiful girl, Rio Miyaichi. From then on, Etsuro regularly peeps on Rio, but eventually sees a rape attempt... which ends with Rio killing her would-be attacker with a box cutter. Etsuro is knocked unconcious by the shock, but later goes to check on Rio, who greets him warmly and even cooks for him. The two become friendly, but Etsuro keeps secretly peeping on her... to discover a dark secret: Rio is a serial killer....
