Like many have said, this first episode was interesting, and yet was reeking of missed potential.

When I read about this series and the feeling I got from this episode was that we are having a mecha series with a horror/supernatural flair to it. And I think if it had gone a little bit more in that direction, it wouldn't have felt so lackluster.

Most of the characters are all being introduced in succession, but are all underdeveloped, even for a first episode. Some characters start off interesting and then later fall flat. Goth girl and twin pigtail girl are guilty of this.

Our MC has a greater potential to be interesting after that admission of wanting his brother dead, however, he comes off as a bit of a jerk most of the time, and he's so emo, that he's falling into "boring" territory.

The prologue and the setting were good, and I'm hoping they can set this world up a little better. They haven't really done much to distinguish it from our own normal world, and are really just alluding or showing images of the evil zone. They don't do much to make the zone, the Admonitions, or the Corpses to stand out very much. We hear about how horrifying and evil they are, more than we actually see it.

I hope this show gets better. It's okay right now, but nothing really to write home about.

Well, I knew that anime these day have habbit serve anything on silver plate, but what I didn't know there is so much people who got spoiled by it. I liked subtlety of first episode, it introduced characters and gave some promises of future character development/exposition. Whole show have down to earth feeling about it

These promises are enough to keep me watching longer with expectation, it might disapoint me, but it might be also one of gems.

You think this was subtle?

Anyway, my impression didn't change from when I watched the pre-release. The story has some potential and could develop into something somewhat interesting. Unfortunately the characters are boring and uninteresting as fuck. Some of them were also annoying.

I guess I'm one of the few who really REALLY liked this first episode. I thought that a lot of people's complaints about Okada was that she pretty much 'brute forces' her story to you, and here there's a lot of 'read in between the lines' flashbacks and foreshadowing, and people still hate it when everything isn't spelled out. You just can't win, can you?

Yeah, it's not going to touch Brynhildr as my current favourite anime of the cour, but it's competing with Captain Earth for my #2 and #3 spots. And choosing one over the other is like choosing real robot vs super robot, so I can't make up my mind. I like both for different and incomparable reasons. XD

There is it, the last show of the season... and perhaps the least. It was slow, confusing, and worst of all, boring as hell. There's no hook. Characters have barely been introduced, and only the surface of the premise I've been scratched. Worst premiere I've seen this season. It's very hard to believe Satou is directing this.

This episode didn't give me a single reason to keep watching. I will only do so because I'm a big fan of Satou. Hopefully, it will improve.

Such darkness...
Halfway through and still don't know what to think.
It's obvious the kids are gonna have to save something.
Somehow the darkness is really scary & the light (normal world) is so-so.
The plot seems to be just warming up.
Anyway, I think I'm gonna skip this.
Just didn't peak my interest..

IThis wan't terrible or anything, but nothing to be excited about. The dark angst filled style doesn't do anything with me. The characters didn't help at all. The mc is half angst, half boring, whole jerk, and the worst kind too. The monsters made of human feelings (I wrote fillings there just now, a more intersting direction) are something I don't expect M3 to handle well.

The foreshadowing pointing to the pilots meeting as children, were I assume is the Lightless Realm (such ominous name, oooh), doesn't make any more hopeful.

I did like the robots. Reminds me a bit of old shmup ships, or those classic mechawarrior designs. I have a liking for the non-antropomorphic design, specially reverse joints. I hope it being a wheel based design will show later in it's movement. The back leg is a good idea, makes it look balanced. I'll stick around for this at least, and a chance to see more clearly the corpse's design.

I'm afraid Satou is too much of a nice person to handle Mari Okada.

Wait! Mari is involved?! I take back what I said before, it might have potencial, but it's clear it will get wasted.

Well, I didn't even make it to the 12-minute mark. The MC was just too much of a jerk that I lost all interest in the show (which didn't seem all that interesting to begin with). Afterall, if there is absolutely nothing to like about him, and much to dislike, why would I want to watch a series with him as the main focus? Oh, I know, some will say "character development." Sure, he might develop from the complete and utter jerk he is now into, what, even more of a complete and utter jerk? The rest of the show did not offer an adequate amount of compelling reasons to continue to watch the show despite the MC.

They weren't recruited, they were conscripted. Either way, the reason is obvious: who would watch this show if the mechas were piloted by adults in their twenties or thirties? Like many shows that have come before it, the task of saving the world is burdened by high schoolers (and in many cases, middle schoolers, such as Alien Nine). Could this be otaku-pandering?

Seems to be a interesting show. I don't see why all the complains. Seems like nowadays everyone wants a series ep 1 to have everything.

Just watched episode 1 and it seems like I'll drop this, for sone reason it feels like Guilty Crown (I can't explain it, it just does) and it's ttying to be too serious, the main ptotagonist is boring and a jerk (as if he channeled Sasuke). This seems to have a lot of potential but feels like it will be wasted.

It wasn't terrible (apart from the animation - there's just no middle ground with Satelight) but very uninspiring. If I were to try and nail it down, the episode felt like it was prefab - put together from a kit rather than built from scratch.

Yeah, without taste or bite or notable flavor. There was something there, but it was... well... bland, maybe? Not terrible, just... well, I think bland may be a good word. Not quite insipid (in the sense of how something tastes), and not quite stale either....

Well, I have to say that I'm liking this show a lot. Yes, it seems a bit flavorless, but to me it more like I still can't see in what direction the show is going (horror, a bit of gore, mecha and romance all together?) and what kind of characters we are dealing with. I mean, the MC is still, as always, the chosen one, probably due to his brother, and he has probably her fated one on the other side. And the way he got his mecha was contrived as usual, but I liked how we got there with that insane guy and all. So despite that the show quite intrigued me. Probably it is the mood, the atmosphere, that I'm liking the most. The school settings have been kept to the minimum as much as the comedy. And it's a plus for me.

If anything, from an optimistic point of view, a low-key start has better chances to get better and for now I'm expecting it from this show. Great starts are more prone to disappointment later for obvious reasons.

Anyways, I'm looking forward for the next episode.

To be honest, I think I'd like this show a lot more if I knew what the hell was happening. Or rather, why it's happening.
