And the love polygon off the bat... well hopefully it won't be as obnoxious as a Mari Okada show or Nagi no Asu Kara (tbh I don't think it'll be) but PLEASE don't make that the central theme. Coming of age, friendship and glassmaking please ok?
Yes.

I cannot count the number of anime that have been torpedoed due to bullshit love shapes, especially since so many handle them in such a callous manner that lacks maturity and treats it more of a plot device and some kind of game where the fans can get teased and devour each other like in a bloodsport and people's waifus are trophies; then again we're talking about shipping wars, so this level of savagery is to be anticipated and then the discussion veers off course inevitably and we don't even talk about the show's narrative anymore-- and sometimes the anime itself dives straight into this load of crap.

So, for Glasslip to be so upfront about it, I cannot imagine why they'd just drop all pretense and saying we're just diving into it. In fact, they're playing it so straight that I wonder if they're going to do some TWEEST and deconstruct the whole thing. Maybe the chickens are going to die?

So we've got not-Tsumugu threatening chickens and throwing the hormones of a group of teens into disarray. Gee, I wonder where I've seen that before...asides from the chicken threatening bit.

All kidding aside, I'm not impressed, and I already went in with lowered expectations. I'll drink their artistic kool-aid with their "canvas-art" still frames and animation, because the show is still better looking than most others. But it seems I'm not the only one who though the pacing was all over the place, and that this is about as cookie-cutter a PA Works production as it gets. It's their weakest premiere ever, and next few episodes are gonna have to do some serious salvaging.

And in fairness to you, the visuals really are fantastic. The compliments you're making of the visuals (including the Direction) are ones I largely if not entirely agree with. It's just that I've been a bit spoiled by PA Works I suppose. KyoAni and PA Works are two anime studios that I'm now accustomed to getting total visual magnificence from. So it can be easy to sort of take it for granted when it comes from one of them.

I agree Triple_R. Kaoru Chujo did a good and articulate job... in fact I can commiserate a little more with her not liking Hikari from the get go in NagiAsu now that I having a fresh "right in front of me" general similarity with transfer student-kun in Glasslip. If that were not an issue for me the series would have had me as excited about it as NagiAsu, Tari Tari, etc.

Again though! Let's give the series the benefit of the doubt and a chance to prove itself! I ammore than willing (even a bit hopeful) to seeing things get better from hereon out. ^^

I echo a lot of the negative sentiments for the first episode. I'm concerned with how unlikable and pretentious the transfer student appears to be.

I think I gave Hikari a little bit of leeway because of his age and that boys at his age tend to act that way, more than I can the transfer student "David". Him, who's pretty much a senior in high school, I have to say he's more psycho than a boy who's simply immature.

However, we'll see how he does in future episodes.

"David" does seem a little creepy to me, especially concerning how he just started about things killing the chickens out of nowhere. I can understand that he's the catalyst to the group of friends just as Tsumugu was in NagiAsu, but somehow, he doesn't connect to me like Tsumugu did.

While I can see why somebody would find him pretentious, he honestly makes me think the complete opposite. In other words, he strikes me as someone who lacks a good "filter" for social situations. In other words, he's not good at acting polite, and holding back controversial/confrontational opinions. Most people put on at least a bit of a "social mask" - It's not to say that we're insincere, but rather that we choose our words carefully and keep certain things to ourselves. "David" just speaks his mind, with no reservations at all.

I probably should clarify what I wrote before - I like "David", as a character. Or, at least, I think he has potential. It's most of the rest of the cast that really could use some more discernible traits, in my opinion.

Hmm, I was wondering if Glasslip would be part of Hanasaku Iroha and the rest of P.A.Works original anime universe? I'm begging it to happen at anytime.

Still, the first episode is a good start, but I think the humor fell flat in my opinion.

So you have a character reading Albert Camus, a chicken probably named after Edmund Husserl, a weird discussion on free will and choice by 2 main characters, and a side character asking a guy if he would die if the main girl told him to.

All in a span of 20 weirdly paced minutes.

What, is this going to be a romantic SoL show dealing with the absurdism of the romantic end of high school life experience, or have I been sniffing too much anesthetic from the ER again?

I thought the first episode reminds me a lot of True Tears. Not just some of the character designs but the chickens as well. I find some parts of the episode cute though while I do notice some more dramatic moments.

It's been ages since I've seen True Tears though...

Also, I think this is a 1 cour from P.A. Works.

I'm in Kaoru's camp not liking Hikari from the get-go, and coincidentally for the same reason you gave him a leeway. As much as I'm giving "David" it now because the way he behaves feels not natural (as Hikari's felt). Implying that he probably is not really like that and that there's a reason behind it. So I'm interested by him. Far less by the glass-making girl.
Having said that, I agree that Nagiasu had a far better premiere than Glasslip. But I have to re-watch the episode yet. Surely the déjà vu feelings I had with glasslip didn't helped.

After watching the first episode I get the feeling that I'm not well read enough to actually understand all the subtleties that the show is trying to convey. Like MeoTwister5 pointed out the show has quite a few references to stuff that I'm sad to be completely unfamiliar with and which severely impaired my enjoyment of the episode. The visuals however were outstanding and I can even see how most of the still shoots work as artistic choice as well as a way to overcome any potential budget limitations that any anime-original show not called gundam is bound to have. Well, aside from that last shot of the characters talking before the new kid came into the shop... That one was the worst kind of budget saving I've ever seen in a P.A. Works show.

Overall I think that Glasslip is yet another show by P.A. that I'll be dropping (the other was Nagi no Asakura and that is coming from a guy who managed to finish Red Data Girl). I'll probably give it another episode or two to see if it clicks but so far I haven't seen anything that drives me to keep watching. The pacing just felt way off for me and visuals alone just aren't enough anymore.

Yeah...I think it's fairly silly to compare Hikari and David at the moment. Despite being only 13 years old, Hikari quickly attracted enough hate to be called a racist sexist future wife beater. David hasn't even remotely attracted that level of hate and at most attracts a mild dislike whilst not having as much of an age leeway. Besides, I'm not convinced David is supposed to be seen as purposefully negative as Hikari. In fact, I'm not sure if he's actually supposed to be seen as negative at all even. A more appropriate comparison would be to compare David to Tsumugu who also attracted a mild dislike for being similarly alien.

I saw Hikari as an pushy little creep who kept bossing Manaka around. Kakeru ("David") I find interesting and attractive, playing with and respecting Touko, rather than putting her down. Maybe, as Triple_R suggests, he lacks a filter. In any case, it's amazing how different people just instinctively see characters in different ways.

I do wonder how the creators wanted us to feel. I suspect my feelings about Hikari were stronger than they intended. But I do think they want us to be more intrigued than repelled by Kakeru.

Thanks to MeoTwister5 for pointing out some of the philosophical references. I don't think they are necessary to understanding and enjoying the show, but they do add enjoyable depth. By the way, what MeoTwister quite reasonably calls "weirdly paced," I consider inventively, even brilliantly paced.

I guess it's possible that the scene in the cafe that Dextro refers to was "budget saving," or perhaps replaced a sequence that was badly drawn. But I think it was intentional and had the purpose and effect of showing that this group is losing focus for Touko, as Kakeru is coming to occupy her attention. At the end of that scene we see the bottom of the door, and the sound of the conversation fades, carrying the same effect even further.

I think it was intentional as well. In fact, my first impression was that there was something supernatural or paranormal at work during that scene. There were several times during the episode when I felt that actually.

I like the scenery and it's probably the only thing I like about this. There are some strange random stuff in here. Random focus on glass (probably to emphasize the main theme or something.) The chickens. Please make some good dishes out of them the next few eps. Have them roasted would be nice. What's up with the hot pot scene where I have to stare at the hot pot while listening to the conversation. Same goes to the strange still before main guy enters. I had to stare at the still for quite a few seconds while listening to different characters talking. I don't feel too warm and fuzzy about main boy and girl pair but I may watch another ep for the scenery and the secondary pair.

I love the opening so smoothing and relaxing I could listen to it for hours.

That being said I'm curious how the supernatural stuff will play here. It appears Touko and David can see the future? At least a glimpse of it, I think. I'm a fan of Tari Tari and I have faith they will execute this love polygon right without being too obnoxious. I need a good rinse after that bad taste Nagi no Asukara left.

My only complaint is that white filter they have around. I thought I was watching a flash back. I can deal with still frames but darn that was annoying.
