Some girl have terrible looking bug eyes.
Also, I saw few pages from newer chapter - it's drama not simple slice of life + CGDCT.

This is so gonna be my Weekly Dose of Colorful Sugary Goodness.

Hana is so totally a ninja though... though wait, Naru also has a samurai heritage methinks (seeing her with that katana was actually quite lovely) .

Can't wait to see the actual dancing though, especially if they can do a complete routine.

With a large budget, I'm hoping to see a full yosakoi dance with no 3d like Idolmaster.

Hana attaching herself to the window in the middle of Naru and Yaya's conversation cracked me up more than it should have...

Being already partial to music and visual performances to begin with, I cast aside my seething prejudice for moeblobs and leaped into the first episode after reading series' description. 25 minutes later I'm wearing a grin rivalling Luffy's.

Frankly its presentation is still a little on the diabetes side for me, but this has all the right things going from the characters alone. Hana's drive and inspiring positivity could be a nudge that Naru needs to break from her rut and take another step forward in life. While Naru's offer to help provides Hana a means to fulfil her dream as a dancer and also to have someone else to share it with. Having no prior knowledge of the manga, I'm keen to see how this will play out. It might be a performance I'm happy to dance along with.

Another plus: Naru is a kenjutsu practitioner. That's a big yes for me. [Edit: let me elaborate ] Naru is very shy and withdrawn, so it's interesting to see her taking up swordsmanship even if it's probably just something her father wanted to pass on. Further implying she's clueless as to what to do with her life and allowed herself to be dragged along into martial arts as something to fill the void with.

The episode title. Can't help but remember this and its remake:

Oh my god, took little to no time for the opening addiction to kick in.

Still looks so freaking good. I'm hoping to see a full dance sequence in a episode that will have that much level of eye-candy.

Hana is definitely a fairy, not only because of her looks but also due to her rather different outlook on life compared to the typical Japanese girl. (And I guess another reason is her unusual way of getting around. ) Naru definitely needs Hana's spunk to move forward, though. That short exchange in the library was a distressing example of Naru's decision to live a normal life. And that urge to normalcy isn't even the same as in the energy-saving Houtarou Oreki.

With NGNL's director Atsuko Ishizuka leading Hanayamata, I think this series is at least going to be a saccharine and dazzling! experience.

I'm not usually a fan of the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things genre, but I really enjoy this first episode. This one actually seem to have character development planned, unlike a lot of these kinds of animes. Very pretty, plenty of cute, but with a touch of seriousness.

Ep.2

"Drama" in anime is showed in less serious/emotional tone compared to manga. Yuri power is a bit higher too. I'm okay with this

Spoiler for Comparison to manga:

People who had a problem with Naru's personality & behavior in the the first ep. will feel more comfortable with her in this ep. I think.

Yaya's face expression in anime is gold!

Tsundere, tsundere!

Yes, Yaya, you are totally jealous. It hurts, doesn't it? Not only having your friend seem to be being taken away from you, but to have this new girl come in and be able to do something for her that you, for all your desire to protect her, haven't been able to do. It hurts.

PS: Freerunning does not explain Hana's nightly acrobatics. If a freerunner wanted to jump from the ground to the top of a shrine torii, they would do so in an entirely different fashion (and would probably thoroughly mess up the kimono she was wearing in the process). I shall, however, accept that it is probably the best excuse the author is going to give us.

A good second episode. Naru taking some good steps forward as a character which was certainly nice .

Also good focus on Yaya both the positive and the negative. You certainly can lock into her downsides in this episode. The ignoring of her friend's concerns to avoid losing her, the jealousy, letting that jealousy turn somewhat hurtful as she hit on Naru's weak points there. At the same time she does recognize those weaknesses and with some help reaches back out to fix things up with Naru. Certainly does care about Naru and it's clear how much of an important support Naru herself has been for Yaya over the years.

I guess they are at least trying to give some excuse for Hana's abilities. I guess freerunning fits more into that world than actually having Hana be an alien/spirit/supernatural in some way. Did also tie into getting to understand her a little. While really loving superheroes she wanted to aim for something where she wouldn't be left alone.

Did enjoy Naru's prep for Hana coming over. Everything from hair to erasing the internet history . Though I guess she couldn't hide her father .

Depends on what's in the internet history. Some people who come over are nosy, and you may not want them to see where you've been.

Another good ep - I am really enjoying this series!

I especially liked the going beneath the surface for both Yaya and Hana. What was presented of both of them felt well done and genuine, yet quite human, normal and endearing at the same time, and shot up their points in terms of liking their characters - especially Hana. It is not always easy to see one's weaknesses (such as jealousy or that one is lonely on a deep level), let alone articulate them or do something about them.

By the way, also was surprised that my guess about the Naru to Naruko thing seemed to be spot on! I coukd count the number of times such guesses were correct on one hand.

In which Yaya is jealous.

I do love the contrast between Hannah and Yaya shown here, and it's obvious that the latter really cherishes Naru a lot... except her method of caring for Naru seems to be keeping her in a protective "cocoon", if that metaphor makes sense. Thing is, that's the opposite of what Naru needs right now.
