@gravitation, it would be helpfull, when you can give some detailed information, on what you have installed/deinstalled shortly before the problem occured. I don't think Windows XP has problems recognising your CD-drive. I assume it is some special driver that works around the normal drivers, but now doesn't work. So Windows XP cannot initialise the chain of protocols/device drivers that are needed to mount the CD-drive. Sometimes in the registry there are additional entries that add to the normal chain of files/device drivers. Some CD-Simulation software might do this, in this case, a normal uninstall will effect nothing. You might want to use this software to see how many filters are theoretically loaded.

ok now this only if you do not see any other chance to get it work...
(it might mess up your system even more)

run regedit
search for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D3... search the exact number that represents your cd-rom device}
delete "UPPER FILTER" and "LOWER FILTER"...
close regedit => reboot...

So it was itunes causing the problem? It shouldn't as all it does is make your ipod show up as an external usb/firewire drive.

I used itunes at home and work and they install fine without any conflicts.
