A touch and go situation: Kakashi vs. Orochimaru
This has bothered me for a while. Why didn't Orochimaru just kidnap Sasuke back when Kakashi seals his cursed seal back in episode 40? Oro just backs down and leaves when Kakashi starts up his Chidori. If Oro is so confident he could beat Kakashi, he should have just fought him and recruited Sasuke then.
It looks to me like he was surprised Kakashi's technique and may have feared it, so he played it cool, backed off and made an idle threat. Btw, I'm new to the board. Hi all. |

Orochimaru is way too strong to fear a 1v1 with Kakashi. I think it maybe because that building (or area) which they were in was filled with 'good' guys who hunt or are against S-class criminals such as Orochimaru. And Chidori makes a ruckus. Furthermore, Orochimaru originally wanted Sasuke to seek him by his own will instead of kidnapping Sasuke and forcing him to get stronger. That way, Sasuke would have been more enthusiastic about getting stronger. Orochimaru is confident that his plans are inevitable. Besides, such a charismatic and cool villain like Orochimaru does not have time to deal with second-rate ninjas such as Kakashi. j/k ![]() Spoiler:

Good points, but that doesn't really explain the sudden change of heart.
It's like: Oro: "Sweet, Ima gonna get my Sharingan on today!" Kakashi: "Aw, hell naw! Chidori!" Oro: "*surprised look* Uh... Sasuke be a true G now, no ghetto-ass seal's gonna keep him from me. Laters. Btw, I could kill you easily." |

No, the reason he didnt do that is because he wanted to destroy the hidden leaf village with the help of the sand. If he killed Kakashi and kidnapped Saskue, he would have caused the tournment to be cancelled and the entire village to be on full alert with him around. They wouldnt be able to successfully attack the village otherwise.
He also wanted Saskue to seek him out as you said, but its mainly because he wanted to destroy Konoha. |

Another thing to think about would be that while Kakashi might not have been able to kill him, Kakashi would have likely hurt him enough to make Oro's escape with Sauske difficult. Like it was said before too though, that fight no matter how short would have made a good deal of noise.

All of you make good points.
#1 Don't cause a ruckess with all the "good guys" around. #2 Wanted to play it cool and destroy Konoha during the matches when most everyone had their gaurds down, instead of getting most of the ANBU after him. Thus being able to suprise the 3rd and kill him. #3 He wanted Sasuke to get as strong as possible (training with Kakashi, ect) and make him want the cursed symbol.

when orochimaru asked kabuto to kidnap sasuke, it was more or less a test of kabuto's loyalty. orochimaru wasn't going to take sasuke by force, so what would be the point of killing kakashi? he presented himself to kakashi more as nastalgic self-indulgence rather than a chalange. kakashi reacted like a small dog would to a wolf just passing through the territory.

There can be no doubt about how a fight between Orochimaru and Kakashi would end; with Kakashis defeat. Even Kakashi himself knows that he can't beat Orochimaru.
The third was said to be the strogest of Konoha, so if even he fell for Orochimaru, then a "low level" person such as Kakashi wouldn't stand a chance against Orochimaru /Terriator |

Other things to remember, is yes i beleive Orochimaru would beat Kakashi, but it would not be a simple fight, nor could he just blow past him quickly. Altho a bit later in the story(i don't think this is spoiler cause it was in the Anime already), Kakashi did pretty well vs Itachi, before the manganthingie(even Itachi's partner thought so), and Orochimaru admited to itachi being stronger then himself. So even if Orochimaru can beat Kakashi, hes by no mean's a "easy" or "fast" kill. He would have the whole base on him if he tried to beat Kakashi there.
The main reason of course was already stated by others, he wants to destroy the leaf, and taking brat boy at that moment, would have ruined his plans. |
