Elfen Lied. There were too many sad moments and it got me depressed for days after having watched it.

hands down gundou musashi... the saddest excuse for an anime...
gundam seed destiny was also pretty sad. i felt really really bad for the gundam franchise

i like feeling emotional when anime, i like when they make me cry and i dont try to hold my tears from running if one manage to move me enought.
kimi ga nozomu eien made me cry and feel depressed for a long time like no other anime ever made me feel.
school day eventhough it made me laught also made me feel depressed when i put into perspective the feeling of the characters.
a lot of anime that requieres you to do an introspection in order to understand the deepest part or that make you think about the role and meaning of a human being as well as the nature of humanity are rather depressing cause it often pictures humanity as something hopeless. (evangelion texhnolyze etc etc come to my mind)
i find clannad to be mediocre at best yet only 1 moment made me shed a tear in a heartbeat :
Spoiler:
that moment really gave me a heartache.

Grave of the firefly is ofcourse a no contest winner and shouldnt even be allowed to compete.

Hmmm....

5 centimeters per second...

I SWEAR, that film is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.

Chrno Crusade's ending was pretty heart-wrenching....

I haven't watched Grave of the Fireflies so I can't really say....

Clannad tends to get a tad emotional at times too...

Air TV. The music pretty much nailed it in for me. I can't say I was as impressed with Kanon 06 and recently Clannad. Nice animes but the musical edge I'm looking for isn't quite there. Though, to each their own really.

I'm not sure about saddest but I'm changing my vote for most emotional anime ever watched to Cardcaptor Sakura.

Ahahaha.
Musashi Gundou was so great. Definately one of the funniest anime I've ever seen; it changed my views on "crap".

And I wouldn't say Grave of the Fireflies is the saddest anime "no contest"-style. It's a bit wrenching in the end, but it wasn't as if it was due to inevitability and whatnot.

For some reason, I didn't seem to find 5 Centimeters per Second as sad as many others have. It's still one of the best anime productions I've ever seen (the best movie by far), but it wasn't one that I found depressing to such a large extent. Of course it was sad, but not nearly as much as some other stuff I'd seen.

Gah. Air TV OST = Love.
I've learned about four piano pieces from the OST, though I can only really play one now (Natsukage, of course.) However, The movie had blatantly overplayed Lia's Tori no Uta, though. The whole soundtrack is probably eight variations or Tori no Uta and Aozora.
I also found that Kanon 2006's soundtrack wasn't as good as people made it out to be. It had several great pieces, but I thought Air's soundtrack was much better.

And Makoto Shinkai's stuff is good too.

mmm...
I'll say Air, since it was an anime I watched early on, and it still affects me each time I watch through it. (of course, after three viewings and one of its dub, I get the plot quite clearly.)
For some reason, I couldn't stand bittersweet endings, so Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora.

Ah, and even though I've had the movie for almost a month now, I still haven't watched Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, I hear it has its moments.

Excellent. Now I can bug you to watch Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo also.

Anyways, I will agree that I didn't find 5 Centimeters per Second very sad, but rather, just really good. However, this is based on my optimistic interpretation of the ending.

EDIT: Most of the anime I watch I don't consider sad, except for maybe Mahoromatic, Grave of the Fireflies, and SaiKano. Rather, I either feel very emotional or shocked, but sad isn't really something I feel in anime.

1.) Grave of The Fireflies

2.) Kanon (Specifically the Makoto arc, gosh that was tragic)

3.) Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu

4.) Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru ( 5 Centimeters Per Second)

I don't usually watch sad animes, therefore my list is rather small.

i agree gundou musashi was both awsome and sad, yet the awsomness was never intend. was it the act of a genius or just a fluke we ll never know only time will tell.
it the kind of thing that if you arent in the mood for it you will just concider it awfull but if you go over that it s the kind of anime where you just cant stop laughting and asking for more (must be my masochist side showing up )

i wish there was still a torrent alive of 5CM cause i didnt get the chance to see it and it has about as much chance of being release in France as i would to have a threesome with allie sin and jena jameson :/

Yeah, sometimes it's just a guilty pleasure to watch crap.

EDIT: Maybe this is against the rules.
Better safe than sorry or whatever the new phrase is nowadays.

and some more bad judgement on my part.
I'll probably get to it sometime this weekend, since it looks like I'm mildly free.

And I can begin CCS, too.

Kanon, hands down. I think I developed some kind of PTSD when I watched it last June... It kind of completely changed my personality. Every single arc was just so tragic, and the ending felt bittersweet if anything.

Grave of the Fireflies, the first time I cried in any work of fiction. Probably more painful because I imagine stuff like that happens a lot during war time. Air Tv comes close, but I have a more optimistic interpretation of the ending.

Air TV- Last episode was the first time I cried so much in an anime

Kanon- It had it's moments

And as much as I hate to admit it, Naruto made me teary eyed at times when I used to watch it two years ago.

Here I am, posting in this thread yet again, because sad anime are so good (in a non-sadist, non-emo way).

My revised top three is:

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien: Emotional destruction to the maximum.
SaiKano: Emotional destruction to the maximum.
Bokurano: Emotional annihilation consistently every other episode.
