1 - Strawberry Panic! (Tonally perfect anime. It never missed a beat in 26 episodes. It's not a major series, but by far is the best romance with a little bit of everything.)
2 - Neon Genesis Evangelion (Everyone forgets, but for that time period...there was nothing more mecha and cool - except maybe Gundam)
3 - Shakugan no Shana (Shana is probably one of the few believable superheroes of our age. Yuji's character development in the 2nd season was great. Overall, it's the best popular series currently out)
4 - Bleach MANGA. The anime is atrocious. The fillers are laughable. But Kubo makes the show what it is and for that it's worth watching.
5 - Niea_7 . A very little unknown comedy written by half the people from Lain and the character designer of Haibane Renmei. (It's a perfect comedy with a blend of Japanese lifestyle.)

Mecha is for kids. I've never seen a show with mecha in it that had any subtle elements worth my time. Same applies to everything where stand-offs and "fights" are a central element.

Hmm, top five is it? Here goes to random destruction of your inner peace through disembodied voices emanating from the feet of children...
1.) Kannazuki no Miko
I don't care if the mecha wasn't as good as it could be, nor do I care that the plot may have been confusing for people who don't want to spend the effort to understand it. KnM is the best romance story ever written. Period. The plot was a stage for the two main characters. And for me, it completely converted me to supporting yuri relationships. I used to avoid homosexuality, as I had no understanding of it and with how people around here treat it, but after watching this anime - I was compelled to change.
Haha, this one may be just me. Senseless gore, sexy leads, interesting plot. On second thought, I guess this shouldn't be here... oops....
3.) Murder Princess
I liked the animation and concept. I didn't like the execution. There was no flow. Oh well, fangirl genes kicking in. ><
4.) Candy Boy (ongoing)
The animation is excellent, the story (or lack thereof) is sweet, and the implied incest is... heartwarming. Too many people bash the poor show for the incest, and they are just blinded by their own hatred. Oh well. Here's to a delightful show that got buried.
This was a brilliant anime focused on character development, character interaction, the characters themselves and... nothing more. The plot was dropped, the ending was open with loose strings abound where you just can't seem to not strangle yourself. I suppose it was for the best, but at times the show was too cluttered with attempts at romance or seriousness and the like...

Haruhi Suzumiya (pure genius and nice art/animation)
Shakugan no Shana (I loved the characters and art)
Spice and Wolf (Serious attention span required ^^ great in depth story and nice art)
Elfen Lied (modern anime thats not too scared to show some violence)
Bleach (not always great, probably more of an addiction)
