Well, looking back through the episodes, Ed and Al's dad's name was revealed quite a long while back.

Episode 3 ( 09:30 ), on the envelopes on the tables, it was written 3 times.

Hohemheim Elric

Yes, with 2 m's.

Well I'm not too positive of the legitamacy of the official spelling since in a letter from the Fuhrer it showed his name as Bradrey instead of Bradley so in my opinion its either Hohenheim or Hohemheim, but whats the spelling of the namesake he is named after in Real Life?

Edit: I was listening to ep 32 again where Dante mentions Hikari no Hohenheim and she pronounces it "Hohenheim" so I believe it 'N' and not 'M'

You're forgeting that Japanese don't have a real 'r' or 'l', it's the same to them.

They might be taking the silent 'm' as 'n' in Japanese or the 'mu' is pronounced too fast and soft to catch. Anyway this thread is not supposed to be "names as they should be in real life" but "names as they are spelt in official sources".

Oh I know about the "L" and "R"s in japanese but considering if it was "official" then you'd believe it would be spelled correctly regardless Just offering some perspective on things Also since the letters are in cursive the m's and n's look very similar, but I guess we'll just have to wait till a Newtype/Animedia/Animage scan that shows his name or the official site to be updated to be positive

The 'l' & 'r' issue has been well known even to the Japanese and been done to death in "official" prints. Brandon/Blandon in Gungrave is a good recent example besides FMA. To the Japanese, they are both the same and official when they read alphabets. To us, they look different.

If you want a good example of bad work, then Edward(Gangan/Sony, the official one anyway) and Edword(Bandai, 3rd party licensee) is a better example.

Hey, Yondaime. You might like this Remember about how "official" should care about how it's spelt?

Check out Sony's character page for FMA. On the default page, there is Scar right? Katakana スカー

Now check out the character selection for episodes 11-22 and check out Scar there....

I am quite embarassed by what they wrote there that I'm not going to list it here at all...

In fact, I think I shall find a box and hide in there till they explain what the heck were they thinking when they printed that.

Perhaps that is his "real" name. (yeah, right...)

True, true

Well, I've always put the manga at the top priority, overriding the others (since Arakawa-sensei and her gang are the originators).

I figure the goof-up at Sony is probable to a new guy ("It's my first day!"), since they have the correct spelling for the first frame. It's only for 11-22 that this happened.

Well it was obviously nice that the names were all Germanic or English to begin with so we don't have to suffer horrid Japanese to English name conversions.

W00t! I'm not the only one reading those books! I'm on the first book right now (but I've already read the second one before this one, and I started the first book after FMA ep 48 or something) and when Lyra's name came up I started to think about Lyra in FMA. Although those characters are totally different!

Lyra is an instrument too. I think. In English it's called "lyre".

I hate when people spell Lyra as Lyla. IT'S NOT LYLA! If it was, they would pronounce it like "raira" and not "laira"!

Also, about Jan/Jean Havoc... the Danish/Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish Jan is actually pronounced as you would pronounce Yon. Not like the French Jean. The French one is more like "zh-o-n", while the Scandinavian one is like "yoh-n". Both names derive from John anyhow, so it doesn't really matter.

The Elrics

Hohemheim Elric (Anime)

>>His name sounds German, though there is no German first name 'Hohemheim', replace the 'm' of 'hohem' with an 'n'. This makes the name credible. 'Hohen-' is quite regular in Germany. Though still not in a first name.

Not that my comments seem to interest anybody in any translation department; in GSG they translated 'Hirscher' to 'Hillshire', which is quite stupid. Still looking for a German guy with this name.

Face the facts: If you want to translate anime, you need a German-speaking linguist. More than 60 years after the alliance during ww2 the bonds are still strong. On both sides, I guess.

It turns out that the "Alchemist to the Backbone" factsheets in the DVD packs also reveal the names of the characters. Some more updates including Meisun. Yep, not Merson, not Mason but Meisun. Greed's gang are officially updated as well.
