Well you should be able to play the video in your average media player (Windows Media Player is one example, that should aready be installed on your computer).

However, if you are unable to play the video, or if the video doesn't play properly (no sound/picture), then the problem is that you computer simply isn't unable to decode it.

The K-Lite codec pack is a collection of codecs and other related tools, and should be the answer to pretty much all of your problems when it comes to downloading videos on the internet (also, it's absolutely free ^^). You can download the pack from it's offcial site, here http://k-litecodecpack.com/

I hope this was helpful. ^_^

The file you want to play should be video file, that should have a file extension of either .avi, .mkv, .ogm, .mpg, .asf, .mov or .rm. If it doesn't have one of those extensions, it's propably not a video file.
In most cases, downloading VLC or MPlayer should get you going. In contrast to all other options, VLC and MPlayer don't need any additional codecs or anything else. You only have to install one of those application. Additionally, they don't install into a part of the system a noob can't reach and can be easily removed by deleting them.
