But then again, what else is new..? Secondly, I simply loved Noriko's tussle with Sachiko. It was really quite... refreshing.

No, my japanese is still very basic.
Another episode dedicated for Shimako and Noriko. It looks that Noriko is a very stubborn person. She is willing to argue with Rosa Chinesis when she criticized Shimako for letting Noriko to call her Shimako-san. |

I think the did a superb job for this episode. As the first installment of the "Rainy Blue" and "Parasol o Sashite" arc, the way they portrayed the awkward sense of atmosphere of the Yamayurikai was enacted masterfully. I wonder if non-novel readers were able to "get" this tone?
Also, did anyone notice that Rei-sama was reading "Ibara no Mori 2" at the beginning of the episode? One part that I was really looking foward to, but was cut out in the anime, was the part where the three second-year students were walking in the student hall in melancholy. I believe this was an important scene which gives an introductory pointer that this and the following two-three episodes are taking place simultaneously on the timeline. As a matter of fact, the first year students courageously going up to their second-year members of the Yamayurikai to say gokigenyou was left off. Although, the part where a single Rosa Gigantea (Shimako) fan says gokigenyou to Shimako is shown....I wonder if they'll continue doing this similar scene for Yoshino and Yumi respectfully. Noriko's true characteristics and personality begins to shine (finally), as she goes on a marathon spurt of explaining her reasons on not joining any club to Shimako. This sequence in front of the St. Mary was done with a great applaud by me. I'm glad they didn't cut the Tsutako-Shimako dialogue scene. This is one part from the novels that I liked where Tsutako-san shines as a great friend and advisor to her peers. Now, if only Mami-san had more appearance roles in the anime... And so, Noriko-chan officially becomes a member of the Yamayurikai as the new Rosa Gigantea en bouton by "borrowing" Shimako's rosario. One thing that was interesting was how they changed the following dialogue in that rosario scene: Novel Noriko: 志摩子さんが卒業するまでそばにくっついて離れないから (I will always be at Shimako-san's side until graduation) Shimako: だったらもう、私は寒くないわ (Then, I won't be cold anymore) to Anime Noriko: 志摩子さんが卒業するまでそばにくっついて離れないから (I will always be at Shimako-san's side until graduation) Shimako: 不思議ね・・・こんなにずぶ濡れなのに、少しも寒くないの (Isn't it strange...how [we] are wet, yet [we] aren't cold) And the addition of Noriko's word 片手で仲間を、もう片手で私をつかんでおけばいい (Cling on to your friends on one hand, and me on the other) was also surprising. To give you the truth, I actually found the anime-version portrayal of these dialogues to be better for a postive outlook for the future than the novel. Last edited by kj1980; 2004-09-12 at 19:53. |

Noriko claimed my heart with this episode.
Her squabble with Sachiko did it all, finally a girl with a little spunk against the school traditions ^^ YAY! I've gotten someone to relate to.

Noriko sounds unbearably cute when she gets mad or excited. Touko sounds cute all the time. And the voice actresses for both of them are doing an outstanding job so far.
I watch the raws without understanding any Japanese, so I was a bit confused by the rosary thing. Why did Shimako not put it around Noriko's wrist? |

I felt this episode was tailored towards fans who have read the novel. Quite a lot of Shimako's monologue were left out which I think are quite pivotal to the story. During the scene of Noriko's first visit to Yamayurikai, Shimako was looking to and from Rei, Sachiko and Noriko, with a worrisome expression. You have to read the novel in order to know what is on Shimako's mind at that time. I wonder how many viewers can actually get it if they haven't read the novel beforehand.
A very subtle thing to watch out in this episode that will be one of the key points in the next episode. Take notice of whom did Rei ask to serve tea when Noriko first visited Yamayurikai. Too bad they didn't show how they were seated when they were "interviewing" Noriko. Maybe they will put it in the next episode.

I love how Noriko handled the rosary thing
"This rosary, can I borrow it?" XD go girl! While neither Rei nor Yoshino are my favorite characters, it seems like we got their rumble coming in the next ep. I'm looking forwards to see more of Rei in a kendo uniform ^^ |

As a non-novel reader, I thought Shimako was acting oddly worried and protective of Noriko, like she wanted to make Noriko feel welcomed and not feel grilled by Sachiko & Rei but didn't know how to do it. Shimako isn't someone who would impose her will over someone else; I think she'd consider that a burden and I don't think she'd want to trouble Noriko with any obligation or expectation. Shimako also looked a bit lonely as she looked around the room and saw how at ease everyone looked. This episode was all very reminicent of the Sei/Shimako ~ Haru 6 episode. |

Not sure if I explained well enough. Maybe kj1980 can add some more comments on this.

Thanks for your explanation, lordwu. Shimako is really her own worst enemy, with no shortage of internally generated angst.
Having said that, I do find the fierce protectiveness between Shimako/Noriko very cute and endearing... So let me get this right: Shimako wants Noriko to fit in with the Yamayurikai so badly that she's just coming up with worse case scenarios. But of course she doesn't say any of this to Noriko, since she doesn't want to burden Noriko with her concerns or any perceived expectations. Good thing Noriko's there to cut through all that nonsense.

Wow, I just watched this episode and Noriko is really growing on me! She's such an awesome foil for Shimako, and the two are just so perfect together. I also agree that the seiyuu is doing a fantastic job so far in giving Noriko such a lively and expressive voice.
Thus, in honor of Noriko's greatness, I have changed my avatar.

Episode 9 is out.
Wheee~ more Noriko! She had a quite fight with Sachiko, most others are very traditional but she does not have same kind of background (like she said she is more buddhist than catholic) so I understanded why she didn't like their traditions that way. And lordwu's explanations make sense, it was impossible choice for Shimako to choose between them and Noriko, so Noriko chooses for her. Too bad that they didn't show Yumi's reaction to that arguing, a first year student challenging her onee-sama like that. ![]() Last scene where Shimako and Noriko were sitting under tree and sun was shining through clouds was truly heart-warming. |
