I like how I was trying to sound all smart with my lame theories, when it's ultimately come down to, "Eh, maybe he just wanted a red band instead of blue." Then again, I'd pick red over blue myself if I was a ninja in the Naruto world.

As an adult, my head is 22 inches around the forehead, and I don't think I have an anime-sized head. Assuming the headbands come in a one size fits all category, I would say they're about 30 inches (70cm) long. A very slender adult man can have a waist under 30 inches around, and since Lee seems to be a rather slender little boy, he can probably swing it. Since Gai is not a slender little boy, maybe he got his by special order.

Or, maybe he just likes red better. In the beggining of the manga, Sakura wore a dark green one. I never heard a rule saying the hitai ate HAD to be blue. =P

I think the colour of his head band is just a matter of design.

I think red colour will be more stand out than blue colour on green.

Moreover, take Sasuke's shirt as an example, he used to wear a blue-ish shirt before the Chuninn exam. But when he popped up to fight Gaara, his shirt was somewhat more dark blue (towards black) colour. Nothing was said about it, so I can assume that the author implies nothing to it either.

i think the authors are bringing out individuality...notice naruto that has been wearing is jacket undone or shikamaru with the chuunin jacket....i think we are seeing internal developments and changes in the characters

That's your opinion. However, the color of the band might actually serve some significance. Out of memory, most jounins wear black bands whereas all the genins and most chuunins wear blue ones (although Neji was wearing a black headband in episode 98.) It's confusing now that I think about it.

...or maybe it just looks better. I mean, picture Rock Lee with a blue head band around his sexy waste... it just isn't him. :(

maybe red looks better than blue on the a full green suit

not to mention the problems that would create blue and green when painting and drawing maybe it was a way to make the belt stand out a little bit...

it's not for the looks if u actually went into a manga drawing lab you would know that the colour choice is based on many more factors than just looks unless we would just make all blue don't u think?

i think so to that they made the belt red because it would stand out more, blue and green doesn't match.. But i dont think the colors of the headbands is that important to discuss about. And i certainly believe that there's no story behind Rock Lee's red headband

Lee isn't the only one with a different colored headband. Neji's is green/grey. I guess they just changed the cloth for stylistic purposes. Lee probably chose Red to emulate Gai.

Though he had only met Gai once when he became a genin, and didn't know he was going to be his sensei.
