Marimite S2 Ep.11 (official thread)

It's been a while since I watch an anime with much emotion, even though I know what's going to happen. I’m going to write as if Touko-chan as a fiendish usurper here (even though it is not really the case) as to keep in the same thought process as the non-novel readers.

The sakuga quality was exceptionally excellent. I'd assume the animators would use their best skills to portray this last arc of this season, and they did.

In the novel, this whole thing is taking place at the same time as the previous two episodes, but alas there have been no notion shown in this anime of such inter-twining.

So we begin with Sachiko-sama cancelling the amusement park date with Yumi. Something seems to have come up (most likely to be answered in the last episode). And, Touko-chan devilishly appears...

[OP sequence]

Yep, you can't forget about Yumi's blue umbrella...that is an important symbolism.

Minako-sama takes Yumi over to show Sachiko-sama with Touko-chan. Yumi thinks Minako-sama has brought her over so she can get a scoop on a "Red Rose Revolution" (by the way, the Lillian Newspaper showing that is pretty cool). However, Minako-sama does not want to see Yumi and Sachiko break up and end up in the same predicament as her friend.

Hmm, is it just me or that Yasuko, Masumi and Asaka look very scary (it reminds me of Fate/stay night) in this memory scene? While no name is given here (as well as in the novel), a short story was released in this February issue of Cobalt Magazine about this soeur-triangle incident. Yasuko is the gran soeur, Asaka (Minako-sama’s friend) is the 'real' petit soeur and Masumi is the usurper.

Actually, the memory shot doesn't even look like them at all...

Here's a picture of Yasuko and Masumi from this February's issue of Cobalt by illisutrator Hibiki Reine:

and this is Asaka:

Going back to the story, Minako-sama does not want to see the Rosa Chinensis soeurs to end up in a soeur-triangle, nor does she wish to see Yumi putting on a facade smile.

Yumi looks so cute here trying on her clothes to wear for the next date she promised with Sachiko-sama. Yuuki is happy to see Yumi finally smiling again. Yuuki however strikes a good point on worrying about Yumi on her school life being so dependent revolving around Sachiko-san.

The phone rings…and we finally see a glimpse of Yumi and Yuuki’s mom!!! It’s only her back side though. Yuuki hands over the phone to Yumi…and it is Sachiko-sama. Once again, the date has been cancelled since something has come up. Rage of emotions and questions churns up within Yumi…but she chokes them down into her id and says “it’s okay.” I thought this part was articulated rather well along with the novel. Good job.

Cut to scene on the next day where Touko-chan is waiting in front of the Bara-no-Yakata. It is as if she was waiting for Yumi-sama to appear just to show that she is much more closer to Sachiko-sama. Touko-chan hands Sachiko-sama’s wristwatch in front of Yumi.

Good thing the anime did not forget to cut out the hydrangea lecture.

[Commercial break & eyecatch]

Cut to scene at the Yamayurikai. In the novel, the events that take before this was the incident where Noriko-chan was “lectured” by Sachiko-sama on how to address Shimako. No mention whatsoever was done in this scene, so I’d taken to assume that in the anime, the past two episodes were not happening simultaneously as in the novel.

Yumi asks Sachiko-sama to decide on a next date for their amusement park trip. Yumi’s psychology here is on the verge of frailty as she begins to mutter “As long as I get a promise, I will be at ease until that date” and “I don’t mind it becoming cancelled…as long as I get a promise, I will be rest assured…”

Touko-chan cuts in, whispers something into Sachiko-sama’s ear, and they start to leave. Yumi makes a strong move here by addressing “Onee-sama, we are still under discussion.” Sachiko-sama turns back and tells Touko-chan to wait downstairs, and tells Yumi that “Yumi…I cannot make a promise right now because I don’t have such schedule. Please…understand.” Sachiko-sama starts to walk off. Yumi dashes to Sachiko-sama “Please, don’t go!” while Touko-chan addresses Sachiko-sama to hurry up. Yumi makes her boldest move yet by yelling at Sachiko-sama “So you’ve chosen Touko-chan over me!” Sachiko-sama turns back with a very scary look by ending the conversation with “…okoruwayo” (I will get angry) to Yumi.

Alas, however there was one thing missing in the anime that was in the novel – Yumi’s monologue after this in the novel was of a very strong conjecture. Since non-novel readers would be eager to know what was going on inside Yumi’s mind after this, here is a rough translation of that scene (Mari-mite Vol. 10 pg. 193-194):

Touko-chan calls out for haste from beneath the stairwell. As her (Sachiko) hand reached for the doorknob, Yumi desperately yells

“So you’ve chosen Touko-chan over me!”
Sachiko-sama paused for a moment. As she turned back, her facial expression was of anger that [Yumi] had never seen before.

“…[continue this further and] I will get angry.”

Leaving behing that remark, Sachiko-sama left the room and headed downstairs where Touko-chan was waiting.

“Get angry…?”

Grimaced Yumi as she stood alone in the empty room. If she wants to get angry, go ahead and get angry. It’s much better than making up for the debt with kind smiled or sweet words.

That is why Yumi felt great that Sachiko-sama showed such expression to her. She was able to make Sachiko-sama into such level of anger. Whether or not what was in that angered emotion, it showed that Yumi’s thoughts reached directly at Sachiko-sama.

Yumi thinks to herself what a twisted expression of amour she has – to ask for a promise that cannot be given or to say such things to make Sachiko-sama angry.

She can feel herself becoming more and more unstable. Yumi looks at the rain hitting the side of the window glass.

It’s this rain. It’s all the weather’s fault. That is why my mood does not clear up.

Going back to the anime.

Yumi is in melancholy as she walks with the last thought written in the novel in mind.

Once again, there is a difference between the novel and the anime. In the novel, Sei-sama comes into Yumi’s umbrella because she forgot her umbrella. Sei-sama quickly figures something is wrong with Yumi and figures it has to deal with “that horizontal roll” that she just walking alongside with Sachiko just a few moments ago. Sei-sama tells Yumi that she is willing to lend an open arm to discuss what Yumi has mushed deep within her emotion. Sei-sama adds, “Yumi-chan, please do not give up on Sachiko.” Yumi does not respond as she thinks to herself that she cannot always keep on relying on a person that had graduated – that this is something that she needs to resolve on her own. Too bad this scene was entirely cut from the anime – but I guess time constraints do happen.

Cut to scene at the convenience store. Yumi buys a box of butter (not shown in anime) that her mother asked her buy on the way back home. However, her beloved blue umbrella gets “stolen.” That was the last straw that cut loose the emotions that she packed into the bag within her.

Yumi comes home all wet and crying….and we get our first shot of Yumi’s mom and dad!!! This is the first appearance of Fukuzawa Miki (mom – her surname before being married was Houribe) and Fukuzawa Yuichiro (dad). Take the “yuu” from dad and “mi” from mom, and you get “yumi.” Take the “yuu” from dad and “ki” from mom, and you get “yuuki.” Of course, currently the credits at the ending only says “Yumi’s Mother,” but there that trivia for those non-novel readers. As Miki, Yuichiro, and Yuuki looks at Yumi in shock, Yumi begins to cry in pain and sorrow as she screams “…Don’t take people’s stuff!! Don’t take the things I cherish away from me!!!!”

It’s Sunday again and she decides to call Sachiko-sama to apologize on what happened on Friday. She calls the Ogasawara household only to have the call taken by…Kashiwagi Suguru. He tells Yumi that Sachiko cannot answer the phone as she became carsick. Suguru, not knowing what is going on within Yumi’s mind, rest assures her that Sachiko is doing fine and that Touko-chan is taking care of her at her side. Yumi figures that this was Sachiko’s answer to her question Yumi yelled at her that fateful day. Yumi reaches for her rosario…and takes it off. She had become tired of being in doubt of someone she had admired.

Yumi refused to come to the Yamayurikai meetings that week. Yoshino, being worried, asks what is wrong and tries to help. Yumi, however refuses that it is all too late. Yumi, clenching and shoving her rosario into her skirt-pocket, walks out of the school, leaving a concerned Yoshino behind. There, Sachiko-sama is waiting for Yumi. Sachiko-sama, with the same kind voice, calls Yumi’s name. “I should let you know what is going on,” says Sachiko-sama as she touches Yumi’s tie.

Yumi, looking up to her beloved oneesama, is in mixed emotions – her feelings for her beloved gran soeur still exists, yet ponders deeply how many more times she will be allowed to call Sachiko-sama as her “oneesama.” Her “heart“began to melt” with her beloved oneesama beside her. Just then, Touko-chan appears.

Yumi’s “melting heart froze instantly” as she deduced that Sachiko-sama was not waiting for her, but was actually waiting for Touko-chan. Yumi coolly says to Sachiko-sama, “oh, I understand” and begins to walk away. Touko-chan then has the “nerve” to say, “Wait Yumi-sama. Your discussion has not been finished yet. Would you care to join us on the way as you discuss your matter? Right, Rosa Chinensis” with Sachiko-sama agreeing. Yumi could not stand it any more and runs away into the rain.

Filled with emotions of rage, anger, distraught, sorrow, fear…Yumi cries as she runs in the rain. She is at the bottom of her troubles…when she catches a glimpse of Sei-sama ahead of her. Yumi, throws everything she was carrying and jumps into Sei-sama’s arms crying as if clinging on to her last hope of light. Sei-sama has been always there for Yumi whenever in trouble. Sei-sama kindly wads Yumi’s head. Sachiko tries to call for Yumi, but Yumi refuses to let go out of Sei’s warm arms. Sachiko sighs in despairs to Sei-sama “I am sorry for the trouble” and hands Yumi’s belongings to Sei.

Yumi is still crying in Sei’s arms, when Sei says that Sachiko is about to leave. Yumi realizes that Sei has Yumi’s belongings in her hands – that Sachiko-sama went into the wet and muddy ground to pick up her belongings. Yumi yells “oneesama” once again as she runs towards the car carrying Sachiko-sama and Touko-chan. However, the car leaves behind Yumi as if Sachiko had gave up on her. Yumi cries down in further despair as the car leaves…

We see a shot of Sei-sama…and a glimpse of Katou Kei in the blurry background.

Episode ends with Yumi crying in the rain in the middle of the street.

Next episode: more new characters:
Katou Kei – Satou Sei’s “friend”
Ikegami Yumiko – the elderly woman – Katou Kei’s landlord
Aota Mitsuo – Yumi’s teacher back in first year of middle school, holding Yumi’s blue umbrella.

Post viewing thoughts:

Overall, the episode was rather well done...to fit all under 25 minutes.

To be honest however, was that I was somewhat disappointed that the anime was not able to get the portrayal of Sachiko-sama and Touko-chan as in the novel. Moreso, as I got the preclusion that the anime showed Yumi was obviously jumping to conclusions (unless I am assuming that way since I read the novel). I want to know how the non-novel readers took this episode on why Sachiko was cancelling both promises (three in the novel) for her date with Yumi to the amusement park - did you all get the feeling inside you that Sachiko-sama is at fault for putting Yumi into such disarray?

Question two to the non-novel readers: how did Touko-chan portray in this episode? To me, and perhaps lordwu might agree, that it failed to show Touko-chan's assumingly fiendish portrayal that the readers got by reading the novel.

On the other hard, there were many places where they beautifully articulated the scenes - such as Yumi coming home all wet and yelling "don't take away the things that I cherish" and the part where she jumps into Sei-sama's arms.

With comparison to the novel in mind...I give this episode a 90/100.

I don't think having a huge parabola antenna in the US will able to access a VHF signal bounced off from Tokyo Tower...

Answer to your question: I live in Japan.

Kei! The much touted, rumored "roommate" of Sei finally made her appearance!

I agree with kj1980 on most of the comments. I think with just under 25 minutes it's really difficult to do what the novel achieved. There is just not enough time to "brew" the emotion. kj already pointed out the most important monologue that's cut from the anime. Not only the monologue, but the emotional breakdown Yumi had after Sachiko left was I think a very important turning point in the story.

And yes, Touko should be more evil. I'm not sure what's missing from the anime exactly that makes Touko less evil though. I think it's probably the additional comments in the novel that make Touko look evil to the readers. It would be quite difficult to put those comments in animation.

I liked the last scene a lot. Although not as dramatic as I thought it would be, it's still quite well done.

(edit, I'm writing this over for I didn't even understand what I had written before)

I think Sachiko IS at fault for Yumi. For this same exact thing happened last year during the Valentine Arc.

Yumi was avoiding Sachiko but with good intent last year and Sachiko thought Yumi was avoiding her because she didn't care about her.

Yumi was visiting with Rei, Sei..etc...but not Sachiko. (and not noticing Sachikos concern)

Now Sachikos visiting with Touko but not Yumi. (and not noticing Yumis concern)

I haven't seen this episode yet, but (from what is posted) Sachiko sure seems like a hypocrite. Going off and leaving your soeur in the dark about whats going on, even if it's somehing slight, after going off on Yumi over the same thing last season. Sachiko knows better since she herself was just put in this same situation not too long before.

I suppose I doomed to never like her character.

I haven't watched this ep either, but I have to agree with you. The same thing just happened during Valentine's Day!
If my memory is right, Sachiko was scolding at Yumi for not being straight forward in terms of expressing her feelings and all that. However, Sachiko is not much better at this herself! (I guess they ARE alike to some extend)

From kj1980's input, it seems like nightmare all over again for Yumi-chan.

(a side note: I just watched ep 7, and I already wanna kick Touko out of the show... she's evil )

Hmm, it looks like what I pondered about how the non-novel readers would perceive Touko-chan was nothing to be a worry about.

Too bad you guys would not get that baptismal treatment of レイニー止め* which would further increase your anxiety.

*レイニー止め (Rainy-dome = Rainy Stop) is a term used by Marimite fans who were reading the "Rainy Blue" novel and were left with anticipation and agonizing anxiety for about a month until its antithesis "Parasol o Sashite" was released.

This has become somewhat of a baptismal situation for non-novel readers - a person who hasn't read the "Marimite" novels will get a response from the book store and people who have read the novel in such way:

A: "I heard that 'Maria-sama ga Miteru' has a great story. Is it really that great?"
B: "Oh, it is absolutely great. You should at least read up to Volume 10 - 'Rainy Blue' "
A: "Oh, cool. Thanks."
B: [snickers]

After reading up to "Rainy Blue"

A: "I need to read the next volume!"

I just watched ep 11, (yet another raw...) and though I couldn't understand what was being said, Yumi's distress was very obvious.

Sachiko seems so distant and cold in this episode. And she is so full of contradictions! On one hand, she is envious at the closeness that Sei and Yumi has, but her attitude and tone towards Yumi seems to indicate she does not expect their relationship to enjoy the same closeness.

And yet, she allows Touko to be close to her - though I guess Sachiko is more used to Touko since they are relatives. Poor Yumi must be so confused at the signals she is getting from her beloved onee-sama. I personally think Yumi is a bit over-sensitive near the end of this ep, though I wouldn't blame her...

As for Touko, she appears so evil and catty. She must be, since she is taunting Yumi on purpose...

Having watch the raw with little understanding of Japanese, that's basically the same impression I got with those 3.

Still, I like Touko, even though this episode made her look bad.

Awright! Just watched ep 11.

Haven't read the novels, but my whole impression of the scenario was more or less that it wasn't just Yumi who was jumping to conclusions. Of course, Minako's story didn't do a lot of help convincing Yumi that such was not the case but Sachiko's way of handling the brewing conflict left a lot to be desired.

You are the frigging Rosa Chinesis for god's sake. She sure didn't seem so here and gave a rather sad impression of someone who is taking over the work of Mizuno Youko.

Every decision and word she made and spoke could have been better. And this was not about a random school issue that is given to the student council, this was about her own petite soeur. While I don't know the reason for Sachiko acting in this way, it may be forgivable, it may not, but it still doesnt change that she is absolutely no help in handling the situation.

Yumi's big and small signs of needing more attention is obvioulsy not going her by but actually ignored by her. ("So you prefer Touko-chan over me?" <-- If that isn't an obvious cry after attention, *what* is???) Sachiko isn't stupid, but she sure is making an insensitive ass of herself. Ok, Yumi *is* an over-sensitive person, but it isn't like Sachiko don't know that, they are soeurs after all.

To sum it up:

No props for Sachiko in this ep X(

Poor Yumi indeed T_T

Sei still rocks XD

And YAY, we got a Yumi vs Touko rumbling coming up in the next ep. POUNCE THE DRILL Yumi-chan, I'm rooting for you!

I just watched this episode...

Maybe am i wrong about : sachiko spoke with yumi (in the first minutes of episode) about shigotto (job?) and father ???

I really hate Touko, really !!!!! ontoni !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't understand sachiko. but I think she doesn't want to involve yumi in her pain... maybe her family wants to marry sachiko as soon as possible ? (suguru is at sachiko's home when yumi call there). This decision would make Yumi very sad, with the result that sachiko doesn't say to her...

but Sachiko MUST tell yumi what's going on. it's her SOEUR ! and touko is just a foolish person, an evil, and really ..... (censure!) !

In my opinion, Sachiko must be nice to touko, it's an order from her father ? no ? i wishhhhhhhhhhh to !!! lol oh, I'm trying to find why sachiko is sad when touko appears in the lillian's garden. Her eyes showed us at this moment that Sachiko is in a bad condition and suffers so much... but why does she not tell Yumi ???! I really want to know !!! please, write a spoiler ????????????

I just don't understand, I want to see the next episode and the end...

fightoooooooooooooooo Yumi for the next episode with Touko.

I will get angry for the next episode because it's not really the next story. i want to see Sachiko and Yumi, but in the preview only kei, sei and yumi were here. (with new characters, and Yumi VS Touko lol)

i really like this series ! I didn't think that this serie was going to touch me as much.....

really sorry for my bad english

ah, finally got the chance to watch this episode, and I must say, this is definitely what I've been waiting for! ^^

Poor Yumi... she really is in bad shape.. she reminded me of a hapless girlfriend or wife, that's become so engulfed in their relaionship with another human being that can no longer see themself as a whole person. I felt so bad for her the entire episode..

The first rather shocking thing that I noticed were the pictures on Yumi's board in her room -- all with her and Sachiko in some way. ..I don't know about anyone else, but for some reason, my mind zipped right back to the Valentines Day arc of the first season, and to Mifuyu's board (which Yumi's bore a striking resemblance to...only less stalker-ly).
It doesn't look good that she counts down the days to their dates, either..
And the scene in the Rose Mansion was definitely Yumi at her worst.

But man oh man, is this season (if not just this episode) definitely scoring some great scenes! I can NOT emphasise how much i loved the scene where Yumi gets the call from Sachiko, and completely lets loose of all her pent up rage and questions in her mind (I don' think I can remember the last time I heard her so angry), and when she was done with her internal onslaught, said a simple "it's okay". Definitely very realistic -- I can remember a few times when that was me in her place.. ^^;

And the scene where Yumi comes home without her umbrella -- I haven't heard that much sadness and raw emotion in her voice since the end of the 2nd episode of the first season.

Anyhow..
I don't know about everyone else, but I don't really think that Yumi was jumping to conclusions. I think this episode does prove that Yumi's personality is indeed quite unstable, but her suspiciousness was not her fault -- Sachiko did not explain herself at all, and if she was confiding anything to anyone, it looked like she was doing all the talking to Touko.

Granted, I couldn't get through this ep without sensing some sort of ulterior motive for Sachiko and Touko's actions (Touko, probably just because I like her.. ^^; ). But still, there were too many signs that I picked up..

what's the significance of the watch?
what the heck was Suguru doing there?
and did Sachiko really get carsick..?

Oh well. This episode did indeed make Touko look bad (horrible, usurping wench bad), and if I wasn't horribly biased, I'd think the blame should be placed entirely on her. But it looks like maybe a little bit of light might finally be shone onto Touko's personality in the next episode...

(Finally, a fight!! A can hardly wait!!! )

Actually, anyone who hasn't read the novel wants to take a shot at guessing what's Sachiko's business? What's she doing behind Yumi's back? There was a poll held before the release of Parasol o Sashite and there were some interesting results then.
