When his aunt tried to kill him she told him how his mother had named him Gaara because she wanted him to love only himself and stay alive at all costs. When Gaara killed his aunt he finally went psycho and wrote the Kanji on his head and thus we have our present and psychotic Gaara that we all know and love.

Guys, I hate to break it to you, but the kanji on his head doesn't read "love." It actually says "I had sex with your mother last night," a sort of taunt to the opponent even before Gaara needs to say anything. This, consequently, is intended to drive enemies into blindly attacking him to uphold the reputation of their respective mothers, getting themselves killed by the sand in the process. It also has a curse embedded in it such that any man who so much as looks at it is driven to a point of rage, where the only thing they'd wish is to stop Gaara from taunting them about their mother and the afforementioned Gaara engaging in intercourse with her in the pervious evening past.
The more you know!
