Oh, I worded that incorrectly. I wanted to say that every group that wanted to do Zipang had that problem. My bad. :P

I get excited when I see a movie or anime use a historically accurate moon phase because it means that the storyteller is probably paying more attention to detail than most.

Moon phase was extremely important in the days before radar since ships depended on visual detection and identification and planes couldn't operate from ships at night like they do today. Ships depended solely on lookouts for enemy detection at night and lookouts are far less effective if they can't see the horizon.
