Marimite as a recruitment tool
I wonder if Marimite has caused an upsurge in Catholic school entry applications the way Hikaru no Go (supposedly) caused an upturn in the popularity of Go among kids. Obviously life in a real Catholic school would be a bit less romantic, but that's not necessarily enough to deter a fad.
It would have been pretty cool if they'd had a nice-looking nun and a couple of pretty girls doing Sunday school lessons or something like that after each episode the way HnG had these Go lessons with Yukari-sensei. But I guess that wouldn't be possible because proselytizing is viewed a bit differently... Although they could have just been teaching peripheral trivia about Catholicism... But I guess this series might bring in the contingent that would get the church in trouble with the female side of things the same way they have been with the male side in recent times (if you know what I mean), so maybe they'd prefer not being associated with it ![]() Actually, I wonder if the Catholic church or any other Christian group in Japan has made any comments at all about this show, positive or negative. I'm guessing they haven't. I'm pretty sure though that once this gets licensed in the US some religious group will try to find fault with the "sisterly love" thing going to far, etc. if they find out about it. Anything less would be un-American (Chalk it up to my sleep deprivation if what I just wrote sounded weird or offensive. I think I'm unable to gauge that myself right now... Didn't mean to offend anyone, certainly.) Last edited by WTTrinity; 2004-10-20 at 04:33. |

If Marimite becomes a hit, it's more likely to have increasing membership in sororities. I remember that Kyoto University had a mock Lillian souer meeting poster.
Anyway, here's the school tour for Lillian girl's school. http://www.fuzzy2.com/marimite/20030105.html Last edited by GundamZZ; 2004-10-20 at 06:05. |

No.
The area and the school is a place where the author modeled the details from. The place is the Musashino area of Tokyo - an area where a lot of manga authors, anime production studios, and industry related personnel and companies reside. Not to make you disappointed, but there is no real "Lillian," nor a place with a soeur system. The real name of that school is "Musashino Joshi-Gakuin" (Musashino All-Girl's School). Haha, even Deutsch people embrace yuri.
http://www.yuri-gakuin.ac.jp/high/high.htm http://www.shirayuri.ac.jp/index.html http://www.sendai-shirayuri.ac.jp/ ps. In case you wonder why the school is called white lily, white lily is the flower of Virgin Mary. Like white rose, white yuri(lily) stands for virginity and purity. Though, I doubt Sei is a virgin.

A number of American boarding schools has something similar to soeur system. Perhaps a small number, but then, they are not terribly common. In some cases they are called the oneesama's are called "old girls," and in a way act as a student peer version of the more common "advisor," although the girls I don't think choose these relationships for themselves which I suppose is an instrumental aspect of the system at Lillian, and so not all take advantage of the arrangement.
I was wondering if there was some kind of reason that the manga authors and animation companies commonly reside in this particular district of Tokyo, other than the relationship between the mangaka and production companies? Also, GundamZZ, what are these links you sent?? I'm very interested yet do not know Japanese!! What is the relationship between them and Germany? I love looking at these different schools ^o^ |

Shirayuri College literately mean White Lilly College. http://www.shirayuri.ac.jp/daigaku/in/index.html Back to Germany subject, white lily reminds me about a story from Grimm Brothers' folktales. If I remember correctly, it also has something to do with Virgin Mary. |
