Key: the Metal Idol

I just bought the Key DVD box set, pretty cool, not one of the best really though, not so sure it was worth it.

One of the lesser known 90's masterpieces, IMHO. You need to think a biit about what's being said underneath the surface of the plot, however. And what you find is very, very dark... Watching this show upset me more than other "upsetting" anime of that era like lain.

Key is totally worth the money, especially when you consider it's only 3 DVDs for all 13 episodes and both movies. It still has one of the most interesting and complex plots available for anime, and the art and animation are both top-notch. What makes you say it might not have been worth it?

IMO the girl (Key) was a forerunner of "enigmatic, blank-faced, and rarely speaking" type of female anime character. She was faster than Rei Ayanami from Eva or Chii from Chobits. Plus one of my favorite Japanese voice actresses played the role of Key (Junko Iwao - the VA of Serika and Ayaka from To Heart) and she did really amazing job as emotionless robot girl. The English dub isn't really good compared to the Japanese dub because they made Key's voice sound too robotic. I like this anime but keep in mind that this is from 1994 so looks a little outdated. I bought the box too.

Well,I'm bringing this thread back up from the depths of the forum.

Ran into this show while browsing on TV tropes and decided to check it out blind.

Me going in:Well this seems like a moe version of pinocio, should be fun.

After around 5-6 episodes:Wait, everything isn't what it seems is it?

After finishing it:Well that was a good old nice mindfuck.

I'm surprised this seems so obscure,I've never seen it recomended and this thread is 8 years old.
Yet it did win a Kobe award back in 1996 so it did have some kind of recognition back in the day.
Must have been hell to follow this as it was coming out though, waiting a few months after some of those cliffhangers?I would have raged.

Now on to some spoilers

Spoiler for plot:
