It would be "nice" if they both survived and had long happy lives... but yeah it makes a more compelling story if they love and live and are doomed sooner than later.
After all, life is terminal -- we're all dying ... just some faster than others.

LOL, i cant belive so many of you want the bad ending, well i think it would be bad if some one died, but then the greatest romance (i belive it to be) ended with both lovers dying in each others arms.
I would love to end this anime thinking, wow they did it, they survived and will love each other for a long time. YOUR ALL EVIL PEOPLE!!!!!!!ONEONE111ELEVEN! =P

Love stories can important while not being necessarily happy at the end -- the real tragedy would be if they were unable to spend quality happy time together during the time they had. That's what makes the doctor's antics so reprehensible even though he may have good intentions.
Even if you spend many years in a relationship with someone, after they're gone it is hard not to reflect on the things you were *going* to do and now can't. Thats why its important to do the best you can *right now* with whomever you care about. I have a bad feeling this show is going to upset me as badly as AIR did.... <brace for impact>

Couldn't agree more if I tried. Absolutely spot on, great post. My favourite show of the season so far. A lot has to do with the voice acting as well, having recently just started watching Honey and Clover I really like Takahashi Mikako's voice acting in that as well as this show. Just seems perfect for the role. Fast becoming one of my favourite seiyuu(hope I spelt that right), if not most favourite. |

Ok, here's my theory
Rika is in love with the doctor, the lighter is a symbol of her unwanted attention to the doctor. Unwanted because the doctor is secretly in love with Yuuichi! The doctor wants to get rid of Rika but can't do anything obvious like botch a surgery, so he schemes & sees to use Yuuichi & Rika's relationship to manipulate it to try & make Rika die of a broken heart. Rika acts all upset & cant stand to see Yuuichi when she discovers his ero mag stash because she secretly illegally posed for those mags and the old guy was actually the publishing giant of the huge porn company. Yuichi can never see her the same way ever again. Rika's condition becomes critical. Zebramask being the superhero he is donates his heart because he can have a mechanical heart implanted into himself. The operations are a success and to express the debt she will forever be in, ends up with Zebramask & they produce many little Zebras. Yuichi is so inspired by the late old geezer that he goes on to become a huge porn star with the nurse and together they eventually form the greatest adult entertainment conglamorate in the world. In a twist of irony, the doctor who became world famous for his amazing dual simultaneous heart operation on Rika & Zebramask but for some odd reason became a bitter recluse, dies of a mysteryous heart disease caused by an unkown virus he contracted on his mountain voyage. BTW, in case you're wondering, this is all silly. The only semi-serious bit in it is I'm wondering what the deal is with the doctor & the lighter & the Christmas gift. I'm sure it will be revealed later. |

Well, I happened to hear about this one in an IRC room, and I think it'll be perfect fodder for the "emotional junkie" side of me that loves Air, SaiKano, KgNE, etc. so much. . .I'm really liking these characters, even after only 2 episodes. . .it looks like we're heading for something sad, but it looks like most fans won't mind
AnimeUniverse, imo, is the group to go for on this series--accurate translation, excellent editing, decent karaoke. . . I don't really care about video quality (unless it's truly awful), so I haven't compared releases on it. *EDIT: Akai is also very worthwhile (see below) However, I did want to comment on one thing, a line that 3 groups so far have somehow messed up. . .it occurs in the preview at the end of episode 2, and concerns the title of a book (later turned into a movie) called "Ginga tetsudou no yoru" ("Night on the Galactic Railroad), which I assume is the title of the book that Yuuichi is talking about in his preview monologue. A comparison: KuroNeko 24:28 ~~ Natsume, surgery, Rika. Houdai Mountain, the Milky Way night railroad. And... Shin-tabi 24:16 ~~ Natsume, Surgery, Rika, the mountain fort, seeing the galaxy railroad, from then on. AnimeUniverse 24:25 ~~ Natsume, surgery, Rika. Fortress Mountain... ["Ginga no tetsudou no yoru"**left untranslated**] And... The movie (licensed & released on DVD by CPM) is long/slow/strange, but worth watching. EDIT: Akai has it correct-- 24:23 Natsume. Surgery. Rika. Gun-Battery Mountain. "Night on the Galactic Railroad". And then... Props to Akai on this one--I may not know everything about Japan/Japanese/Japanese literature, but at least I'm one of the 26 or so people in the US who bought that DVD  Last edited by Zalis; 2006-02-01 at 22:34. |

Ours is
Natsume. Surgery. Rika. Gun-Battery Mountain. "Night on the Galactic Railroad". And then... Looks like we got it right. Hope you check out ours before you decide on AnimeU. And I must say that our video quality is slightly better, especially in fullscreen mode.

, and I was coming back to edit my previous post. I actually haven't watched Akai's ep 1 (it's the only group's releases I haven't DLed yet), but I will check it out now, and then decide who will take home the glory, Akai-Anime, or THE IRON CHEF

There other things in AnimeU TLs that we should take note.
There are parts where they dont exactly translate what they say. I dont like also the box for the notes... aghrrr... they should have used a transparent box.

![]() back to topic, I really like this anime, even if ep2 was frustrating. Kaoru Chujo's already quoted post really hit the nail on the head there. With only 3 groups doing it there is little competition for AkA (quality-wise), keep up the good work ^^ I would prefer softsubs though
