I was anticipating this title because of what I hypothesized. I saw episode 01 a few days ago. Not too far off from my expectations. First episode was very touching. I can understand Lothar's complaint. Using this premise of Momo the Death God doing her job, let's hope every story has a different message.

I really like Momo already. How she does her job in a staid facade, but afterwards, she sheds tears of sorrow for him and the cat (this tale in general). This gives me a grasp of Momo's character. She appears to be astute and wise from the responsibility of her job as a Death God, but inside, she is perhaps more tender and innocent. I think I may have a thing for this kind of contrast and juxtaposition in (female) characters.

I made a GIF:

Sorry Catgirls, for this was just too cute (and poignantly symbolic).

I thought it was a very sad anime... It was a heartfelt story. I really like this show and I only wish that it was going to be longer. Every now and again these one-shot type of stories are very very good. I really liked both songs too. I can't wait to see episode two. ^_^

It bothers me :P

And no I'm not against shoujo. I just don't like when they take seinen novels and make shoujo manga based on them (and this is not the first time). If they did the opposite: take shoujo/josei novels and make shounen manga from them you'll see many angry fangirls.

And yes I don't like it, and no its not anyones business if I like it or not.

Just a thought: if it's no one's business if you like it or not, then don't bring it up in the first place.

Good OP. Nice show, but I feel Hantsuki is better in my opinion. Will keep watching anyways. A little too slow, maybe?

Oh yeah, Momo has an awesome voice. I almost melted the first time I heard her except that a jumbo jet happened to be flying overhead at the moment I was watching her appearance.

Seinen? Josei?

How would you guys define Seinen and Josei? I'd heard the term Seinen used before but it doesn't look from the pictures like this is the kind of show I'd apply that term to...?

Lol. If you want to hear more of that voice, you can hear the seiyuu, Kobayashi Akiko, as Kisa, the depressive girl in episodes 13-26 of Zettai Shounen. (That whole series is definitely worth watching, in my opinion).

As for seinen and josei, I think they just refer to the target audience: upper teen/young adult guys for seinen, and girls that age for josei. Guys are supposed to graduate from shounen to seinen manga, and girls from shoujo to josei manga. I'm not familiar enough with the titles, but you can only really tell by seeing which magazine the manga is serialized in: shounen or seinen, shoujo or josei. And the manga for older ages often don't have furigana (little characters that give poorer readers the pronunciations of kanji), whereas shounen and shoujo manga do.

It's hard to tell from content which is which, since there is some crossover. Certainly fanservice is mainly for guys and romance mainly for girls, but it's not that simple. Depends on what the publishers think the taste of people those ages in Japan is at any given time. And they can change the emphasis of an anime from its manga, to broaden the appeal.

Oh so that's the VA for Momo? Thought it sounded familiar. She's got a nice voice

The first episode was nice, although I suppose all 6 episodes are going to be depressing I almost miss Hantsuki.

The first episode was just plain and simply boring, and a tragedy, to make it worse. I mean, how can a tragedy be so boring? It mustn't be! It's one of my favourite genres and Shinigami no Balad just screwed it up. I'll watch another episode of this because this could've been much better material, story-wise.
Kobayashi Akiko just steps out too much, even her devilish little neko-san Daniel, as voices from Zettai Shounen. ZS is just too good to be associated with this. Kisa had a huge impact on me and I'm not completely comfortable with Kobayashi-san playing her just yet. Even the spoiled and unloved Uno (and Taruto) as Shimizu Ai is too obtrusive, playing with the cute and happy animal-type voice. In any case, they could've at least considered somebody else to play one of these two. However, Kobayashi-san fits the character well here.

I've now got a photo and some info about Kobayashi Akiko on the Hashihime Seiyuu Gallery site.

And it's good to see some Zettai Shounen love from LytHka, even if I disagree about Shinibara. ZS was a really strong show, despite its Saturday morning time-slot. And the similarly depressive Umino (Shimizu Ai) in the country and Kisa (Kobayashi Akiko) in the city were for me the two most moving characters. I do agree that Ai's voice as Daniel the cat seems jarring so far.

I wrote a complete classification on AS before. It is gone now thanks to the server crash.

Since I am too lazy to type them all out again. Time to fallback to wikipedia

Spoiler for Kodomo:

Spoiler for Shonen:

Spoiler for Shojo:

Spoiler for Bishojo:

Spoiler for Bishonen:

Spoiler for Seinen:

Spoiler for Josei:

+ Ero-anime :^)

Why did I went through the trouble of going through all these? Because I really hate it when people mix up the genre. It irritates me to no end.

I have to agree. First episode of this was the biggest disappointment of the year so far for me. I had fairly high expectations for this, and all I got was tripe... the worst type as well: melodramatic tripe.

Mushishi proves that there's no excuse for episodic anime to be bad, so I can only hope that the rest of the episodes will tell more interesting stories. There's nothing wrong with the premise either... the stories of the cases of a death god should be nothing short of engaging and enthralling. But it's really gotten off to a terrible start with a very weak and predictable first episode.

While I did find the episode very predictable, I found the way the story was told to be actually quite entertaining. To me, that is the strong point of the series.

This series actually seems to be pretty interesting.

Why would you say that? It has already been announced as a 6 episode series. We list that information here: Shinigami no Ballad

I love seinen because it provides the best variety. For example, Afternoon gives us Ah! My Goddess, Genshiken, YKK, Mushishi, Gunsmith Cats, Blade of the Immortal, Blame! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afternoon_%28magazine%29

In addition, we have all the countless bishoujo magazines and novels.

You can't say it's all action. You can't say it's all romance. It is every subject matter under the sun, moon, and stars starring schoolkids to old men, with stories ranging from childish to very mature (and mature I also don't just mean pornographic mature, but mentally mature). Many women manga-ka and writers also write under a seinen label.

I'd venture to say almost all very-late-night anime shows (the hardcore shows) are seinen or based on seinen properties. (The only exception would be the josei noitamina timeslot).

That's why I try shows such as this, because I know that with the target audience in mind I can expect to be surprised somewhat by a seemingly kiddy show. I just hope I won't be disappointed, at least each ep is standalone and has a chance to redeem itself.

Somewhat back on topic, so it's Kisa's voice! Kisa was one of my most favorite anime characters, simply because she's messed up and a total slacker, like me! Thanks for pointing that out.

I'd easily group this into the worst show of 2006 list already. It had nothing redeeming. Nothing happened for 20 minutes, and even when something did happen, nothing happened. I knew my instinct to delete it in the middle of the op was there for a reason. The only good part is the shinigami and the death line in the op.

Hell, I have no idea how people aren't summarizing this entire episode in 3 sentences. "Guy who likes sick girl finds kitten with said girl and take care of it at a shrine. Girl dying from not taking meds and being alone causes the guy to go emo and blame kitten. Pedophile-appealing shinigami comes in and stops him from going emo and then goes and has a good cry."

The premise could easily be good, but its wasted on being a loliphilic slice of sleep.

I am going to give episode 2 a chance expecting total failure (and hovering over the delete button).

/Oh, I forgot to mention that the show was absolutely sadistic.
//Was hoping the kitten would get it too.

Geez... so judgemental. This show is probably only good for a certain audience. It's not a bad show per say... Just not some people's cup of tea. i'm sure a lot of us who knew nothing about the show and saw pictures alone thought it'd be some little girl shinigami going on a rampage killing people or monsters or something. Personally... I think its nice to see an anime like this. It's a slow calm pace, and it has that sense of sadness to it. Which I tend to really like in animes. So all I can really say is... that its not for everyone but that really doesnt mean that it's bad. I'm sure lots of you liked it, probably more than the amount of people who didn't.

You wanted to say "per se", right? Otherwise the sentence doesn't make any sense to me

Yes, you are right, just like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikô is for a certain audience (where I count myself in) and usually I'd say the audience for YKK, Shinigami no Ballad and... for example Zettai Shônen are pretty much the same: Slice of life fans who have a sense for slow paced and (in its own way) meaningful series. Unfortunately I love YKK and Zettai Shônen, while I found Shinigami no Ballad rather disappointing. Maybe I just set my expectations too high but I found myself not to be totally alone with this impression.

I'm still hoping for the next episode to be better though.
